Location. Best location in Ipenema for proximity to beach in a small enclave that is unique in it offer in having its outside eating space on the edge of the coastline. However, for this same reason, the hotel is located further away from Ipenemas main restaurant areas and taking a stroll further away from the beech is less secure than other parts of the ipenema coast line. Room: Small but functional, five day stay was limit on a room of this size. View, none for us, which I am OK with, the beach facing rooms must offer the closetst proximity to the beach among the whole of ipenema. Amenities: Not Great: Food and Drink offer: Not Great. This took its toll given that Ipenemas restaurants are not located near this hotel.
Security of the roadside area. Food and Drink offer expensive and at best average. Far from decent restaurants and a bit stranded away from main Ipenema action.
Cannot recommend this hotel - numerous issues, some minor, some less so.
Was contacted by five different members of staff between booking and check-in, with repeats of the same questions including basics already answered like whether we wanted double or twin beds. Confirmed double, re-confirmed again, and again at check-in. Twin beds in the room. Was sorted after that, but it shouldn’t have happened. They need a system in place to check/record customer contacts - otherwise this gives the feeling the left hand doesn’t know what the right is doing.
Received a further contact around a month before check-in which was a scam, purporting to be from the hotel and quoting specific data related to my booking. I booked direct with the hotel and not a third party. Concerning that either their data is not held securely, or was leaked somehow.
Up to this point, we pushed the above issues aside to look forward to our stay. However..
Persistent issues with the restaurant for breakfast/lunch. Food orders forgotten, twice. We noticed this wasn’t just us - on more than one occasion others on adjacent tables were suffering similar issues. Slow service most days. And our overall order was never totally correct even just once, e.g. breakfast food order missing some items, or the wrong juice came, or no juice, wrong coffee, etc.
Room not kept fully clean. Floor not clean on one day despite obvious dirt. Shower not cleaned one day - floor dirty including visible pubic hair not cleaned. Towels not fully replenished every day - it was pot luck whether we got all or some. And on one day, towels that were hung up on the hooks so didn’t need removing, were removed but not replaced.
Issue with the floor-to-ceiling window that could not be locked when fully closed (could only be locked if kept ajar). This is an issue on Ipanema - there’s noise/activity at all hours so the window needs to be closed at night, but we couldn’t lock it. A particular concern if staying on a lower floor. Raised via reception and full details given, with a promise from them that it would be fixed. It wasn’t. Not sure if this was a particularly inexperienced front desk staff member, because to be fair, the front desk staff were in general a good aspect of this hotel. Either way, not being able to lock the window at night really wasn’t ideal.
The room had a Nespresso machine, which is great, except, the pods were never replenished. Always took at least one call to obtain, usually two, and on one day, after four calls at different times asking to bring up some pods so we could have a coffee, nothing.
Rio is a great city, and the Ipanema area one of the best to stay in. Do yourself a favour and book elsewhere. The persistent issues which come back to poor staffing and inadequate levels of training across different areas of the hotel really is something else when you’re paying a high price.
