A grand old lady needing a makeover

The hotel needs to radically improve its maintenance standards, and its reception procedures.

Beautiful public rooms

Cons:

Dingy room in basement with inadequate lighting.
Broken window lock requiring a coat hanger to prise open
Very unpleasant smell of air freshener/fabric cleaner/? throughout room
Poor directions to room through labyrinthine corridors and stairs, not helped by illogical room numbering
Long queue at check-in. Inadequate staffing. Prolonged procedure when checking in, once the head of the queue had been reached. Receptionist didn't appear to be in command of the procedure.

The staff were very helpful and let us check in very early, we had no problems and we could walk everywhere
Pros:

I emailed before I got there for a room on the 1st floor and straight away we got it a nice big size room

Cons:

We didn’t like the stories we were told about it that made me very nervous and scared
