We chose to stay at this hotel for the holidays. Having stayed previously, we knew that the decorations and the ambiance is what we needed during this hectic season.
The stay was magical! Highly recommend this hotel. Take advantage of one of the promotions during the year. Great savings opportunity.
Premium King Suite was far less than what you would end up paying at a 3 star hotel elsewhere.
Train to NYC is at the backside of the property.
Nice, friendly hotel. Never thought I’d have a “favorite hotel,” but the Madison definitely is my favorite place to stay.
The assistant manager was rude, obnoxious, offensive, insulting and aggressive. I would not stay here.
they call the policy - for no reason. the bar/kitchen manager was un professional un reasonable.
having issue for ordering food from the offsite even that the hotel kitchen was closed
Staff is great and very helpful! I got very good recommendations on local bagels. I was there for a reunion of Honeywell people and the function was great
Girls weekend for a trip into the city!! Saw a show and an exhibit!
Food was spectacular!
So convenient to the train station!
From the first moment we arrived, we were treated like royalty.
The hotel and staff are exceptional. The food was delicious and expertly prepared.
The waiters, bartenders, and hotel staff were professional and courteous.
We truly had a great experience and would recommend this hotel to everyone.
Our daughter’s wedding was perfection start to finish. Management and staff were stellar! A total joy!
Great staff and the food was fabulous. A beautiful place for a wedding. They had multiple events going on but none effected the other. Very professional
The overnight employee, Eliot, was extremely rude on multiple occasions during our stay. Our first interaction was at check-in. We arrived very late due to flight delays and were exhausted, but instead of being greeted, we were told that we “should have checked in online.” It was an odd and unwelcoming way to speak to guests.
We were given $20 vouchers for each night of our stay, which Eliot explained could be used to purchase drinks and snacks in the lobby. On the second night, I went down to buy water and noticed the fridge was empty, unlike the night before. I asked Eliot if they had any water available, and he replied, “Walk three steps to the right,” in a dismissive tone. There were waters behind the counter, so I said great and started to take a few. He abruptly told me to stop and asked how many people were in my room. When I said two, he snapped that I couldn’t take “all those waters” (I had three). I explained that I planned to pay for them, just as I had the night before, and asked if they were no longer for sale. He simply repeated himself with no reasonable explanation.
His tone was unnecessarily rude, and he treated me as though I was trying to steal. It was extremely unprofessional and disappointing, especially at a hotel in this price range.
Cleanliness was a major concern. There was hair in the bed, and soap scum on both the bathroom mirror and in the shower. Overall, the room felt cramped and not well maintained.
The food itself wasn’t bad, but the presentation was lacking and the portion sizes were small. Overall, it did not feel worth the price. The room service process and information could also be made much clearer for guests. We were given plastic utensils to eat steak, which was surprising, and had to call to request proper silverware. We weren’t sure it would even arrive since we had made the same request earlier in the day with no response.
We let the hotel know previously that we were staying after our wedding in another venue. Arrived after 8PM and had to call out for service. The entry counter looked more like an office with standing desks and backs of computers as major feature. Wedding gown and suit not acknowledged but were Given keys and hauled our own bags. Bad choice of Numbering the rooms on second floor had us following all the way to the very end and having to circle all the way back still bags in tow. The decor was awful in the hall and barren in the room. It was clean and bed was comfortable. However,we only chose the Madison because I went to College of St Elizabeth and remembered it as the most charming, warm and elegant place to stay in the area. With the black, gray and streamline decor the lobby is not the showplace it once was. Outside still looks stately but inside could be any other modern and cold hotel. Breakfast was served in said lobby and looked like a circus with crowds, kids and many dogs!Disappointed that what once was a picturesque lobby, halls and rooms are now blah and unmemorable. All for a whopping $400 a night! We had looked into the conservatory for our wedding reception but was not big enough and am now glad that we didn't over pay for the ambiance of that beautiful room only to not have a warm and elegant lobby to take pics in nor beautiful rooms for our guests to stay in.
The positives; The history of the hotel, the potential, comfortable beds, and its clean. The Rod's Grille and the Red Dog Tavern exhibit exquisite woodwork, class and the food was very good.
The negatives:
The culture - the welcome staff at the front desk need to read the definition of Hospitality. They were rude and UNwelcoming to the guests before us, to us, and the guests after us. Other wedding guests who checked in at different times and days reported the same treatment. This suggests a culture issue with the staff as a whole, not an isolated incident or one problem employee. (However - shout out to Luke behind the bar at Rod's Grille! Incredible personality and energy. He makes you feel genuinely welcome. I don't know if Rod's is run by Hotel management or independently. )
The decor - at first glance it appears pleasant. As you continue to look around you realize that the little details are missed for a property whose bread and butter are weddings, with their hotel guests predominantly comprised of those event attendees. The carpets are outdated and offset the old-world charm. Hardwood floors would be a huge upgrade and fit the period style much better. Our bathroom had an apparent renovation compared to other rooms, so it's a gamble which one you get. Little things like updated thermostats that have a smaller footprint than the old ones were installed without repairing or covering up damage caused by the installation of the old ones.
Functionality/Attention to detail - The flow of the lobby is horrible. They have multiple weddings/receptions/events running simultaneously in a churn and burn style. Hotel guests trying to check in have to navigate through event guests who gather in the lobby, blocking hallways and access to the front desk. Carpet on the steep steps leading into the Conservatory is a crap shoot for guests and wedding parties during the procession when combined with dress shoes and/or heels that have little to no traction. Grates in the Conservatory were not seated properly. Open flame candles were not secured within the holders and were leaning precariously. The beautiful greenery laid down on both sides of the aisle became horribly displaced due to guests not knowing the etiquette of entering seating from the outside. An attendant to guide guests properly and fix any displaced greenery before the wedding party enters would solve the issue and bring their service to the next level. I found myself fixing the greenery so the desired effect would be captured in pictures.
In general, you will have a pleasant experience, but if you are looking for OUTSTANDING service with a property completely draped with class, be sure to do your homework.
Some simple tweaks to staff demeanor and attention to detail would make The Madison Hotel hard to beat.
Great value for your money, super clean and the staff is excellent. The food at Rods Steakhouse is second to none. Highly recommended hotel and restaurants.
A blast ffrom the past and that is not good. Inconsistent and resting on their laurels of the past, this location looks like it is lost in time. We were up for a wedding and have not been here since my sister was married here over 30 years ago. We stayed at the hotel since we found a good rate but it is obvious most of the hotel business comes from wedding guests staying over. The rooms were clean but very dated and they tey to give the aura of modernizing while they are not. Lots of bumps and bruises as well as old timey (and not in a good way) touches. The shower was tiny and we are not small people. The rooms were a good size and the bed was comfortable but there were few room amenities. It was passable and served its purpose although we weren't enthralled with the room and mediocre would be the best description. Breakfast was included but the room was so crowded it was difficult to find anywhere to sit and people were literally bumping into each other to get the barely passable breakfast items. It was chaos. The parking lot is a pure disaster with many potholes and in poor condition. We had a rehearsal dinner at Rod's (their restaurant) and the food was s..l..o..w to come out and cold. The service was mediocre as was the food. Some said the food was good, others,no. My wife actually got sick from a vegetarian dish she ordered from the plated menu which was likely due to Listeria or unwashed veggies. Luckily it passed quickly. The Cocktail Hour was pleasant and probably the best food we had with several set up stations as well as prep stations. The reception itself was OK and people made their own fun and best time of it. Luckily, the bride's parents (my sister and bro-in-law) did a good job in providing entertainment. The service, though, at the reception was horrible with the servers more interested in clearing the tables than providing service. Our table never saw a bottle of wine and the wine glasses were removed midway through the meal for no apparent reason. The food was inconsistent with some people enjoying their meal and some like those at our table, not. The next morning, there was a breakfast provided by the bride's parents which was adequate and much better than the hotel breakfast, but, I come to find out, ridiculously over - priced. Overall, the wedding was good but that is only because of the parents and of the bride and groom, and had nothing to do with the Madison. With all the venues available, do your research and find better options.
Our team loves staying at The Madison Hotel. You immediately feel at home. It is offers lovely old-style hospitality that's often missing when you travel today. Breakfast each morning got us off to a great start ... and we continually came back to the hotel for a late dinner after a long day of work. A great stay.
our company had our annual Leadership event at the Madison as in the past not disappointed .
great venue for any events
Enjoyed my stay at the hotel. It is very nicely furnished in both the rooms and fcommon areas.
Conference rooms and dining area was very nice.
We stay often and always enjoy - Madison is a great, close town. Rod’s is fantastic for dining & is directly attached to the hotel.
A very warm atmosphere with friendly staff and a good buffet breakfast.
Beautiful old vibe location, very clean room and easy parking steps away from entrance.
