Location, and the amenities..Close to Petco Park
The parking was $55,no sell parking…
Very clean and beautiful lobby, only downside was the noise from the tram downstairs. Other than that, location was great.
I wish I could give The Westgate Hotel 10 points, because it is a very fine hotel, with professional and hard working staff, beautiful facilities in great location, but the tram noise was just too much to ignore. More about that in section "What I didn't like".
I would describe The Westgate as Vintage hotel, with services you do not normally see anymore at the same level hotels. Super clean, beautifully decorated, well managed rooms, common areas and the pool and spa as well. The carpet on level 15 could use little spruce up though. Wallet parking works very well and although it is a bit pricey ($55/night), it was ok, because I understand that I am in downtown San Diego.
I read about the noisy trams in other reviews and I though I will be ok, because I actually like city noise and do not get bothered by it, trams included. What I did not know that this is not a regular tram noise. The trams in San Diego must use this very laud buzzer (a horn) to alert anyone who is sharing the street with them. This buzzer is so powerful, that it gets to your brain even if you are on 15th floor with windows and double curtains closed. I am a good sleeper and normal noise does not wake me up, but this buzzer (at night about every 30 min) would wake me up every single time. The trams seem not to run (or do not use the buzzer) between aprox. 1 am - 5 am, so this was my chance to get some sleep. I was pretty much awake out of this time frame. Now, I spent in Westgate 3 nights, so I wish they would give me a room on the other side, facing a pool, because I did not hear the buzzer by the pool area, where I spent good amount of time one day to catch up on my sleep. I understand that this is not the hotel's fault, on the other hand I do need good night sleep. Conclusion: if I ever stay here again I will definitely make sure my room is on the exact opposite side of the tram tracks, facing the pool side.
Friendly staff and location
Maybe a bit older
The room was really spacious and has big closet and a separate changing room.
The location was excellent.
The hotel is right next to the train track, so you keep hearing loud honks throughout the night hence the sleep is disrupted.
Even strange tapping and knocking noise are randomly heard through the walls. Despite being super tired, this kept disturbing my sleep.
The carpet in my room was badly stained.
Really nice huge on site gym
Comfortable bed!
Older and not the most convenient location. You can also hear the tram throughout the day.
Location and staff are very remarkable
You must try the pool in the third floor
