The breakfast tasted great. Rooms were clean. Lots of amentities!
Upon check in, one of our rooms wasn’t ready, which wasn’t a big deal. We were offered omelet vouchers which we never received. Luckily because they didn’t have the omelet station set up in the morning. Breakfast was late on a busy Saturday. The hotel requires guests to check in with a key card to get a plate for breakfast, but didn’t have anyone manning the stand. When guests took a plate after waiting for 10 minutes, staff were rude and condescending towards them. It took quite a while to refresh the buffet.
They did change our room due to foul smell.
Unprofessional staff, uncleaned rooms, lack of maintenance to facilities. When asked to speak to management have yet to hear from them to address our concerns
Staff was very helpful in accommodating our large family reunion. Large meeting room was furnished with tablecloths and chair covers, TV/projection capabiltiy with microphone. Several seating arrangements in the lobby with couches/easy chairs made a great place for families to meet and visit in the evenings while kids swam in the indoor pool off the lobby. Buffet breakfast was also a place to linger over coffee and make plans with family members for the day. The hotel is a bit dated, could use an upgrade, but otherwise, very relaxed and comfortable.
The bed was comfortable.
Room had a weird odor and was not very clean. Pictures of lobby are misleading and there is an extra 6.99 charge for omelettes at breakfast which isn’t disclosed.
I can say that the indoor pool was great and we really enjoyed it. The breakfast was ok with not much variation; it was pretty much the same breakfast everyday but at least we got an included meal.
We went with extended family and 1 of the 3 rooms we reserved was extremely dirty and smelly when we checked-in. Check-in was at 4pm and though we arrived at 4pm, our rooms were not ready. After our long road trip, we expected to be able to check-in and get settled into our rooms and rest from our long trip. Unfortunately, we got to our rooms only to find one room had not been thoroughly cleaned after we waited an extra hour for them to get our rooms ready. It was very disappointing.
Breakfast was different, they set up a buffet in the lobby and charge $6.99 if you want an omelet.
The room and hallways were not cool at all. The air conditioning unit in the room wasn’t cold.
Stayed in COS location. This hotel is very old with interrupted floor plan. The service staff is very under staffed. We requested housekeeping on our third day but came back to a room without clean towels, Toilet paper, ect……
But the complimentary breakfast was the biggest disappointment. The plates and glassware was guarded and locked down a minute after 9:00. Zero fruit, fresh or canned was not offered. The omelettes advertised are extra $6.99 and the chef was never there. No yogurt either. We ended up buying our yogurt and fruit. We asked for paper bowls and plastic spoons but were told they are not allowed produce them out after 9 am. Seriously, it was 9:05. Coffee maker and tv remote
didn’t work either. Desk clerk was barked like an army commander and was certainly not in her niche. For the price you are better off staying anywhere else.
Very humid inside the rooms and air conditioning wasn’t good at all. Expected to come back to a cool room after a long day. Had to keep curtains closed at all times and still didn’t get cool.
We stayed the North End Academy Hotel. Staff was nice, even when they wake you up in the mornings for housecleaning when you had the tag on the door. Something must have been wrong with their cleaning room printouts. We were put in a noisy room, that needs sound proofing on the windows and in the walls. The internet was spotty at best and we couldn't even connect a device. The TV would turn on, but nothing worked. We couldn't maneuver to any station. The toilet also didn't flush well at all.
We liked that it was right off the interstate. And was near plenty of restaurants and shopping centers. The ladies and gents that worked the breakfast buffet did a good job on trying to stay on top of making sure that there was plenty of food for all the guests knowing it was a busy weekend.
How unorganized they are and unprepared for large crowds. We had stayed at a hotel just like this one and loved our stay which is why we reserved rooms here well over 3 months ago. They completely messed up our reservation, they gave one of our rooms away to another individual who had the same name but didn’t bother to contact me to see if was the correct reservation. They had to scramble to try find us another room and they weren’t even the correct rooms and on completely different sides of the buildings. Had us waiting 30+min while they tried to figure it out. There wasn’t even a manager on site to assist, which made it more disappointing. I feel like we should have been comped more than two vouchers from the bar and $75 off of our stay. The whole building was hot which made it uncomfortable, the elevator broke down so we had to carry all of our luggage down 3 flights of stairs.
The location
Buffet was terrible rooms are dated and a hotel is not cleaned. Manager was AWOL and wouldn’t respond to request to see or speak with her.
The facility offered a very nice pool, restaurant, and a phenomenally free breakfast. It is about 20-30 minutes from all of the major attractions. The staff was very kind and helpful and the rooms were very clean.
If you are traveling with a family and have several devices to charge, I would recommend bringing a surge protector. Several of the outlets in our room did not work and one was barely hanging in the wall. One outlet only worked if the lights were turned on. So that was inconvenient. The plumbing is very outdated. It didn’t matter what you were doing, the toilet would barely flush and looked like it was going to overflow every time.
We have been big fans of The Academy Hotel for years but the because of the hotel itself and the wonderful breakfast provided. This last visit however left us thinking we'll probably try a different place. It used to be you could get omelettes and eggs cooked to order but that was not the case during our recent stay. A sign said omelettes are now an extra $6.99. But the station wasn't open. By 7 am they were out of sausages. They were out of biscuits. No bacon. There was no fruit to be found. So if we wanted cereal, toast scrambled eggs that were from a carton or fried potatoes we could eat.
The pool area seems to be an afterthought to the staff. No one was checking on the towels or the trash. The front desk had to be asked to get towels for the people at the pool because there were none available. Disappointing.
Place was nice. Have stayed her numerous times over the years. They did change their breakfast policy- you now have to pay to have omeletes (has always been a part of the breakfast- the #1 reason we would stay here, by my kids' choice). We got a suite- 2 queen beds and pullout sofa. (family of 5 and 2 are large teenage boys) the sofa was tiny, def would not sleep 2 and barely fit just me a 5'2" woman- room was advertised to sleep 6!
Price is good- and will probably stay again but was disappointed in the changes or mis-advertised items.
Nothing
The first night we were there the shower was scalding hot only. I called the staff and was told they had no maintenance and they would fix it the next day. Also the hair dryer didn’t work. They text the next day and said it was fixed but when we got back to hotel it was just like it was. I called staff and they moved us to another room. I asked for a reduced rate for the first night since we couldn’t shower. I was told to email the general manager which I did twice and never received a reply and asked to speak to manager and she was never available. The rooms are cooled with old window units which did not keep the room cool, the hotel is old and needs updated bad. There was a feeble attempt to upgrade bathroom by putting a fancy looking sink that sat up on a glass top. It splashed out everywhere and got everything wet on the tiny top. You had to hold on to the faucet to regulate temperature. The floor of the bathroom had not been cleaned good. Breakfast was awful. Not much selection, no fruit or yogurt. They say they will fix omelets but that’s $7 and no one was ever there to do it. Apparently very short staffed and food servers were left empty for long periods and it was a mess around waffle maker. Everything is spread out and had to go a few stairs to get drinks, definitely not handicapped friendly. There was still lipstick showing on their “cleaned” glasses. The elevator was down one day, no apologies, and when it did work it was very slow. There was a nice big pool which was in the lobby area. It was extremely crowded and no limits on how many and there seemed to be lots of kids there without parents. Strange set up with pool, dining area and everything all open in lobby area which can get very noisy.
The first room I got the toilet barely flushed, the tub water wouldn’t go down the drains even after trying to make it go down myself. Then the sink water wouldn’t go down. They gave me another room and that one was nearly the same. I wouldn’t recommend it. I have one star because the lobby creativity was ok but the rooms were definitely not up to date.
This hotel likely was great at one time, but that is no longer the case. The pictures online do not match the actual interior of the rooms. While the lobby is probably the coolest part, everything else is incredibly dated.
⚠️ Safety & Pool Concerns
We found a large staple at the bottom of the pool.
There was no lighting above the pool area, meaning once it got dark, you literally couldn't see the bottom of the pool. This is a massive safety hazard.
🛏️ Room Issues & Staff Response
AC Problems: When we arrived, the thermostat was set to 60°F, but the room itself was in the 70s. We alerted the front desk, they put in a service request, and the official response we got was, "That's just the way it is."
Bizarre Wiring: The TV, refrigerator, and a lamp were all tied to a single light switch. This was incredibly inconvenient and frankly felt unsafe.
🍳 Breakfast Review
The breakfast was okay at best, but it was the exact same every single day with zero fruit or vegetables.
If you want a custom omelet, expect to pay an additional $7.
The staff routinely ran out of dishes during the meal service.
🏋️ Fitness Center
The gym smelled noticeably and clearly hasn't been deep-cleaned in a while, judging by the thick layer of dust on the treadmill.
There were absolutely no towels, water, or cleaning wipes available for guests.
Bottom line: Save your money and book elsewhere. The management has clearly let this property go.
