Beautiful Hotel in a beautiful part of the Peak District
Pros:

Such a warm welcome from Paul and his team. You only get this level of personal service at privately owned hotels and they are rare to find. Delicious food and wine led by a dedicated head chef. The barman Thomas whips up wonderful cocktails, Massimo and the dining room team are fabulous characters and the setting is very special. We are becoming regulars for a reason.

Incredibly disappointing
Pros:

Booked for three days. For a special celebration, but was left feeling really disappointed. Firstly. The hotel was dead. Maybe only saw two other couples. But yet they gave us a tiny room over looking the carpark? I would understand if it had been fully booked. But it just wasn’t. The breakfast was mid, and obviously not local produce. So after day 1 we went out to some lovely cafes and delis in hathersage. Which also meant we cancelled our dinner reservation as we didn’t want our special dinner which was rather expensive to be even more so disappointing.

As for the room. Whilst I understand not everyone can have the exceptional view, if yours is the one with the carpark, I’d expect a really beautiful and comfortable interior. Nope. We had a random table with all our coffee/tea stuff that was identical to the ones outside on the patio. As well as outdoor lawn furniture wicker chairs. Identical to those around the pool. The bathroom was fine. Nice shower and the water pressure was awesome as well as a great temp. Can’t fault this.

The “spa” was incredibly disappointing. A tiny hot tub one that anyone would have at an Airbnb or personal home, that was lukewarm, a tiny personal use dry sauna that had gaps in the door so didn’t seal and was leaking rain water into it ruining the “dry” aspect. The pool was fine, but small and very basic. And whilst not cold it was definitely not a warm or heated.

The kicker for us, and what inspired the review was we sent a hoodie off for laundry service. Firstly, if the hotel didn’t offer this service it would have been okay. But they left a laundry bag so we thought we would use it. I took it to reception around 9am to be told it won’t be delivered back till tomorrow. Okay fine. No issue. The hoodie came back and it felt as though a staff member took it home to wash. As there wasn’t any stain treatment on it so the food stain was still there and it was delivered to our room (nice) on a ladies shirt hanger with sizing on it. Fine. Annoying. But We can sort it at home. But THEN when checked out they tried to charge £30th for this service. What! Only to find out that the cost of the service was £5 which is extremely reasonable, and they added a service charge of £25! A 500% service charge? That did it for me. I was so cross. We had the service charge removed, paid the £5 and are left so incredibly frustrated. Suffice to say I will not be recommending this to anyone. Better spas in the area what charge less per night with MUCH better facilities and professionalism.

Great hotel, friendly staff, superb food and wonderful views
Pros:

We had a great two night stay and came away feeling relaxed. We both had a massage and enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the hotel each day - the food was the most outstanding part of our stay, it was fantastic.

Foodie and walker paradise
Pros:

All the food was amazing, I wish I could have eaten more as it was all superb. Wonderful, kind and attentive staff who couldn't have been more helpful. Atmosphere, ambience and landscape views in the dining area were really standout and made for a very memorable stay.

Cons:

The spa facilities are a bit basic, nice pool but the outside hot tub spa area was a bit tired and I was expecting something a bit more upmarket. The family room (with dogs) was ok but again a bit basic and uninspiring, the shower room had clearly been updated recently and was nice, if a little compact. Outside areas were a bit tired, but still a stunning location and incredible views from the dining room.

A really special place
Pros:

Was lucky enough to be invited to a 60th birthday party as a guest here, as part of a large group.
The place was really quite magical in the snowy wintery weather, and is quite remote (it’s in open countryside rather than in Hope itself).
The staff were great, the bar is really well-stocked with lots of choice and the food was excellent. The hotel is bigger than it looks and coped with our large party with ease.

Peaceful retreat
Pros:

This hotel is great nestled just outside Hope; wonderful dining area; lovely views from rooms.
Small swimming pool and great bookable sauna and hot tub.
Breakfast is first class; really wide choice absolutely delicious.
Our slight negative thing was the very fancy evening menu.
Just would be nice to have some delicious food without all the sauces etc, no doubt a chefs dream but really not for everyone.
Thought it was just us that found it all a bit too much but have now spoken to two other past guests who commented exactly the same
‘Wonderful place, great breakfast but rest of food just disappointing’
Please put some simpler food on for us simple folks! Thank you

Don't go here in the winter
Pros:

Heating in our room totally inadequate, especially in the bathroom (28), it was freezing.
Towel rail was the only bathroom heat source, and was only lukewarm warm despite the efforts of the maintenance team, oil radiator did help in the bedroom.
Hot water ran out while filling bath, not what you expect or need after a full day walking the Peak District. On a positive note the restaurant is excellent.
