Very pleasant stay.
Pros:

The central location of the hotel. The positives, were that the staff were lovely and very helpful providing extra towels, hangers etc on request. The breakfast and bar food was also lovely. The hotel was clean and believe that it is gradually being refurbished, so would look to stay again in the future.
The room had been freshly refurbished and was lovely. The only criticism would be that it would have been good to have sockets to charge your phone by your bed and an additional chest of drawers, as not enough drawer space if staying longer than a couple of nights and a coat rack to hang outside coats.

Cons:

The pool and changing rooms are in need of a refurbishment, as could smell the drains which wasn't pleasant when using the pool. The jacuzzi and steam room was also out of action, disappointing considering the pool looks lovely in the pictures on Booking.com.
Also, there isn't much parking availability, a suggestion to the hotel would be to only have a set number of passes for the spaces available.

Not 4*!
Pros:

We had booked stay here for 4 nights through our travel agent as part of a package. The hotel from the outside is stunning commanding a fabulous view. The location was also excellent. We arrived to a frosty reception - the receptionist was more interested in telling her colleagues about her future plans. The customer service was similar throughout our stay other than in the dining room where the staff were friendly and helpful. It was written on our room card we had booked through Expedia. Not sure if the reason or relevance of this. We were allocated Room 415. So disappointing. The room was clean and spacious but it was very functional and bland. There was an odd picture on the wall which was faded and was of ducks one of which looked dead or dying. The view was stunning. We found the bed hard and light came through the curtains - it needed a blackout blind. The bathroom was clean and spacious but the hotel uses those wall mounted push soap boxes so toiletries were minimal - one of the good things about staying in a luxury hotel should be the toiletries. It was the little things that made the experience disappointing - no magnifying mirror, mould and no bottom on the bathroom blind, screw marks in the pelmet that needed covering. The bidet cold tap didn't work and there was no towel or soap for that. Annoyingly the towel rail was a walk across from the shower. Room cleaning is every three days! However we discovered from another guest that if you hung the 'do not disturb' sign turned around you could get your room serviced. No mention of this anywhere either.

The breakfast room was a bit like an old people's home. The vinyl on the chairs was cracked and they all needed replacing. There were no blinds at the window so when the sun was shining it was too hot (appreciate it might reduce the view). Food was good and plentiful and there was also porridge and poached eggs on request - but no kippers! This was not advertised anywhere. Three of the four mornings the restaurant was busy with coach tours.

We visited the atrium which was like stepping into a different hotel. It was very lovely with the sound of running water but even here there were some issues with the detail.

We tried the in house Thai restaurant one night and we did not like it. My pad Thai was a glutinous mass which I ended up sending back (I have never in my life sent a meal back before this). My husband was also disappointed with his meal. We were given a refund for my food on the bill.

From my perspective the hotel is very tired and is no way 4*. On the positive the location is excellent and we either walked or used public transport throughout our stay. The views are stunning.

We enjoyed our stay but felt it had gone down. Staff were lovely and very helpful.
Pros:

Beautiful building,lovely staff,nice size accommodation

Cons:

Just needs some TLC,las time we stayed albeit a while ago the atrium was fabulous but looks tired with dead and dusty plants. Bathrooms need some serious attention but looks like that’s underway. Looks dated and a bit mucky.

Not quite four stars
Pros:

The Sefton has arguably the most impressive façade on Douglas promenade; its atrium is stylish and the staff friendly and helpful. Accommodation, if perhaps a little dated, is spacious and clean, but the breakfast room is soulless. The self service hot buffet and expectation that guests should use a coffee machine might be acceptable at a Premier Inn but not in a four star hotel.
