Overall a good stay!
Pros:

Location is 2nd to none if you're wanting to enjoy shopping and dining downtown. We were in a king suite on the 4th floor and it was very spacious and clean with great views. The staff was also excellent. From the valet to the front desk, I have nothing but good things to say. (Keep in mind if you are planning a stay, valet is the only parking option)

Cons:

My only real complaint would be the in-room television service. After a fun day of shopping and dining, we wanted to relax and watch a couple of our favorite shows. Well, forget about it. In 2026 old school cable tv is the only available option. No smart tv with apps you can log into, or even the option to cast your show to the tv. It says there is a cast option on the tv but it doesn't work. The kind gentleman at the front desk said it is because of the company they have their tv service contract through. It is time to change.

Pros:

A nice renovation of the old department store.

Cons:

The noise from the music venue downstairs is absolutely AWFUL. Disruptive to sleep. The venue did NOT stop playing at the curfew time. Never stay in one of the rooms on the front and east side of the hotel. Not sure if I would stay there again unless they could guarantee me a room on the backside of the hotel.

Pleasant enough, overpriced and super dated.
Pros:

The location can't be beat and the rooms are huge. The hotel was very clean.

Cons:

There is absolutely no vibe in the hotel, lobby area. Nothing at all going on, no "hotel bar", no entertainment, no music even piped in to make the quiet less "creepy" being in an old 80's department store. We can also very much do without the mannequins on each floor. What went for nostalgia now is just creepy.

Distinctive hotel in the heart of downtown Asheville
Pros:

The Haywood is very conveniently located within walking distance of numerous restaurants, the Woolworth Walk, Malaprop's Bookstore, and many other sites. It is also a stop on the hop-on hop-off trolley that offers a tour of key sites in Asheville.

The hotel itself is distinctive, because it was for many decades a department store. Each floor has a lobby with mannequins and other artifacts of the building's original function.

The king suites are palatial in size; the double queens are more conventional. Each room has a mini-fridge and Keurig machine. The beds were comfortable and the rooms quiet.

Parking is valet-only, at $22/night. The valets were very personable and helpful.

Cons:

The king suite that a friend had was freezing when we arrived (in mid August); the staff had to bring a small heater. The Keurig machine didn't work. (The one in my room did!)

I had a double queen room. There was no towel bar in the bathroom (though I could see where there had been one), only a small hook next to the vanity. I requested a replacement towel bar, but it did not appear over the next 2 days. The only way to hang bath towels was to fling them over the shower stall door.

Over priced, not enough valet employees, initially air conditioning was regulated at 71 degrees but later was changed. Coffeemaker instructions not clear enough.
