Lovely dwelling - lots of little touches that makes it a great stay. We were there for one night and appreciated the stay.
Nothing.
I think we’ve found our new Niagara-On-the-Lake! What a beautiful place to stay… old, stately, but still somehow contemporary and fresh! We were greeted at the door and made to feel welcome right away. We booked the Victorian Room which was one of the original bedrooms in the house. Bed was comfy and we had water and local Soda available as well as a Nespresso. Bathroom was well appointed with a nice roomy shower. We didn’t take advantage of the fresh baked goods in the morning because we were still recovering from last nights dinner. Definitely a place to return to in the summer.
This was our third stay at Merrill House Inn, visiting for one night at the end of December while en route to another hotel for New Year's Eve. The property remains undeniably beautiful and full of character, and our second-floor junior suite was tastefully decorated and comfortable from an interior design perspective. The bathroom was tiny, and there was little storage for clothes, but that was to be expected. There’s a lot to love about the building itself, and it still feels like a special place when you arrive.
That said, the experience has changed noticeably since our last visit three years ago. The inn no longer operates a restaurant and staffing on site is quite limited, which made the stay feel more like a guesthouse than a full-service hotel. We were told at check-in that there were “problems” with the heating. While our room did have a fireplace, it was supplied with only two pre-fabricated logs, which produced very little actual warmth. As a result, the room remained uncomfortably cool throughout the night.
The following morning was similarly underwhelming, with a very modest offering of just coffee and a single croissant per guest laid out on the main floor. This felt sparse given the price point and the otherwise refined setting.
Merrill House is still a unique and lovely property, but expectations should be adjusted. For our future stays in Picton, we would likely choose the Royal for more of a full-service hotel experience, or The Cape next door, where guests are treated to an impressive continental breakfast delivered right to their very spacious rooms.
Breakfast
Couldn’t really fault it except our room was accessible through the restaurant with heavy cases
Tolles Frühstück und kostenlose Parkplätze hinter dem Haus.
Wonderfully comfortable beds.
The back stairs are tricky. Hand rails too big to grasp for small hands. The wifi cut out almost immediately after logging on…each time.
Sehr künstlerisch und liebevoll gestaltet, super netter Empfang. Angeschlossenes Restaurant sehr sehr hochwertig, und auch ein super Frühstück.
This is a Beautiful Small Hotel close to Downtown Picton The layout of the Victorian House with comfortable living spaces The room we had 204 with an amazing soft bed
Nothing. Great place
The restaurant is closing; wish I could be sad. Our recent over $300 dinner for two on October 4 was overshadowed by their lack of common decency for someone with mobility issues. I had been told we were eating in the basement because there were seven of us to accommodate. We’ve been going to this restaurant for years and we knew the layout well. When we got to the restaurant the stairs to get to the downstairs had a large sign posted that that area was closed. After navigating a more difficult set of stairs, assuming the restaurant had chosen to seat us elsewhere, we were shown by a young man at the entrance desk a set of narrow stairs to get down to the basement. He should have known better, but appeared confused and uncertain. My friends commented on my ability to navigate these stairs and I replied it was because I was mad. What restaurant tells the customer they will be in the basement, then closes the easiest way to get there, knowing full well they have reservations for the area? ( Another large wedding group joined us in this room after we were seated). I did my best to recover my composure and enjoy the rest of the evening until at the end of the night the waitress explained that the restaurant was closing because they were moving to a an event only establishment. She commented how difficult it was, an able bodied woman, to go up and down all those stairs when there was a wedding, an event and the restaurant all operating at the same time. I wanted to slap her. We paid the bill, told her that I was going to use the closed stairwell and went home. I walk with braces and crutches. I am clearly, visibly a person with mobility needs. No one seems to appreciate this. I would HIGHLY recommend the Merrill House as they move forward, to CLEARLY indicate that they are NOT an accessible venue and I am happy that I will never have to go there again.

The architecture and interior design . As well as how clean it was
Pillows were a bit uncomfortable. But maybe a preference
Beautifully restored home with all modern comfort. Be sure to book a dinner at the bistro, it is the high light of our stay.
Easy and accessible hotel with thoughtful room amenities - from snacks to towel heaters and robes. Staff were really friendly. I also got the vibe that this was a place made by the county rather than some one from outside profiting off the county, which is important to me.
I wish there was a do not disturb as my room was cleaned when I was there for just two nights and I'd rather have not had that.
Our stay at Merrill house was lovely. The staff are friendly and very helpful. There is good parking at the back of the inn. We had a smaller room and bed was slightly soft for our liking, but we slept well.
We had a delicious dinner in the dining room and I recommend if you are staying there to book at least one night for dinner.
There is a lovely bar downstairs where residence of the Inn can have a drink before dinner. Good choice of wines and spirits.
Overall, a wonderful stay
