Large flat with bedroom , bathroom and lounge with views over The Shambles . Couldnt be a better location in York . Very spooky , free breakfasts .
Traffic noise being in the city centre but triple glazing stops that.
This accommodation is central to everything and it has a great atmosphere. It's a very busy tourist attraction with all its ghost stories . The bar area was always full and the food looked good. The staff were friendly and the room was cozy and comfortable.
We stayed over night and it was a little noisy with the bar/singers downstairs but it was to be expected.
Everything staff were lovely room amazing bathroom WOW
Cleanliness excellent
There wasn't anything
Very friendly staff and very quirky hotel. Bedrooms lovely and clean with everything needed to make a comfortable stay.
We only had breakfast but was lovely.
Obviously not for everyone but a fun different place if you’re not too scared! Although I did have a good nights sleep and vibes felt Good.
Downstairs could do with a bit of an overhaul. First impressions looked a bit scruffy, however upstairs was very clean
the location lovely atmosphere nice staff and food
we where woke at 3 am with what sounded like a tv on very loud was loud for quite a while . when we asked about it the tv comes on by its self around 3 am for an unknown reason could it not be unplugged if the room isn’t occupied this was only thing that we didn’t like about our stay
I think this is my favourite place I've stayed at so far. A friend and I booked last minute to do a bit of ghost hunting through the night (quietly of course) and although we didn't have much activity here, the atmosphere is tremendous. You can feel the life this small pub has had and still has today. We stayed in the Shambles room, I took the sofa and had the best night's sleep I've had in a long time. (perhaps the ghosts sensed that I'm sleep deprived) While it can get a little noisy outside in the early hours, because of where it is and how central it is, this is to be expected. The room was absolutely stunning, felt very regal. I absolutely loved every minute of this stay and will definitely return. This stay is a must for everyone. Thank you for having us ❤️
Loved all of it. Nothing bad to report
The Golden Fleece is quite a unique pub steeped in history dating back to the early 16th century, with several TV ghostly type programmes creating much interest from home and abroad. My wife has always wanted to stay here for the experience so we booked the best room which is a suite on the top floor which overlooks The Shambles. This suite has a firm foot in the past with poor lighting, dated looking furnishings, a 4 poster bed, a lounge and a good size bathroom offering a walk in shower and a free standing bath with adjustable feet which are much needed because of the obvious slope in the room (perhaps a spirit level would be useful here!!) We have experienced a table moving in the bar downstairs on a previous visit and thought an apparition may pay show up overnight which didn't happen, we did however enjoy the vibe in the room/suite and enjoyed the live music and chatting to the locals and visitors alike in the downstairs bar accompanied by Mr Bones the skeleton who can be found sitting on a stool at the bar, he is alas is looking a little worst for wear these days as some unsporting customers have nicked his arms and legs!
Breakfast could be better
Great location and great history to the building. Good pub downstairs and excellent breakfast
Was all good
Everything that I love - extremely old building full of character and period features.. low ceilings, wooden beams, wonky floors! All the spooky decor is great too, it’s a macabre-lovers dream :)
Noise travels easily in this old pub, don’t expect a fully silent night
We had an amazing stay to celebrate a birthday! Inn was full of character, staff were friendly and helpful, room was clean and surpassed expectations. Will definitely be booking again
Absolutely beautiful - an historic building with many a tale to tell.
Very clean, comfy beds, excellent breakfast. 10 in 10 in terms of hospitality.
Be wary if you find uneven floors unsettling. Also, I’d advise that you keep a safe distance from other guests as from what we experienced, they’re hardcore ghost-hunters. We came back to our lodgings and the idiots in the room below ours were staging a full Most Haunted thing, there were six people in the stairwell which is narrow. She said “we tried to get in your room but you’d locked your door.” I mean…
Staff is clearly aware of this and advise that you keep your door locked at all times.
Might’ve had a ghostly encounter around 05:30 but more likely it was Downstairs tapping on the door!
Staff were welcoming and helpful throughout, including storing my bag both before and beyond check-in/check-out. Location is quite perfect and the benefit of history and ghost stories a great extra. Room was quirky and memorable, comfortable. There were no downsides that weren't advertised and expected - yes, could hear the advertised music (particularly when the patrons joined in) up to 23.30; and yes, it's a pub next to an active road, so pockets of noise. The counter to that is how accessible it makes the room for bobbing in. I did 3 walking tours while there: 2 started within 5 minutes of it, 1 ended opposite to it; and all 3 included it on their route.
The location was fabulous, everything was within a short walk.
The age and the quirkiness of the building was fabulous.
The room we had was gorgeous and the bed was very comfortable. Liked that there was fresh milk and bottled water for us in a mini fridge in the room.
The pub itself is nice inside with plenty of unusual objects to look at!
Unusual goings on... were they staged or truly down to the famous spirits! Intriguing...
The staff didn't seem to want to be there, not very enthusiastic.
Our room, as beautiful as it was, was neglected. Dust everywhere, a bit of dust can be excused, but it didn't look like it had a proper clean for a long time!
No heating!! There were radiators but they didn't work. An electric portable heater was left in the room, so I had that going to take the chill off!
The plumbing has a mind of it's own, the shower turned itself on whilst we were sat in the bedroom and the bath turned itself off midway through me running it!
I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of banging and what sounded like furniture being dragged about! Could all of this been down to the ghosts I wonder? Or was it a staged theatrical show for the guests? I actually didn't mind the 'spooky' goings on, however, could the ghosts be trained to clean the rooms I wonder!
Breakfast was just ok really, nothing special.
For what we paid, nearly £300 per night, I'd have expected a warm, clean room and excellent food and service.
We have been to York numerous times over the year's and there's one pub that we visit everytime where in York and that pub is the Golden Fleece in Pavement. This pub offers a superb food and drinks range and offers accommodation and it's without doubt one of the most haunted pubs in York and thats saying something as there's lot's of historic pubs in York that claim to be haunted.
It's an historic inn with records dating from 1503 and was originally a coaching house but from 1656 its operated as an inn. This is a pub that has bags of character with lot's of interesting fixtures and features relating to the macabre.
Its a multi-roomed pub with superb seating option's and a superb beer-garden and on our visits to here this place was packed. It's a pub that offer's a fantastic range of cask ales and on the occasion's we went to here we had numerous cask ale's which were 1st rate'the stand out one being a dark ale.
An absolute gem of a pub and a pub that's well worth visiting and staying in and a pub we'll visit again on our next time trip to York city and it's superb pubs.(This is my second review of the Golden Fleece).
Opening Hours.
Monday-Sunday-10.00-00.00.
The location was excellent and the history was outstanding
Quite noisy at night when the police had to arrest a couple of people outside our window. ( not the golden fleece’ problem at all. Just unlucky.)
Staff were great .... Especially the young lady at breakfast service, she was so smiley and friendly. Great to see nightly entertainment. The twin room I shared with my friend was amazing .... there are only 4 rooms, please keep at least one room as a twin room, don't make them all double rooms.
I feel its a bit pricey to stay at the Inn, is this because of the attraction of the spooky spirits .... just dont over price because cash is tight for everyone....
Great staff, great location, great place.
Tv setup wasn’t great.
Very traditional English decorations, amazing to see as someone not originally from England
