A hidden gem!The Hengshan Garden Hotel offers a perfect blend of tranquility and convenience. Tucked away in a quiet area, it feels like an oasis yet is close to major attractions. The rooms are clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated. The garden is beautiful, ideal for a relaxing stroll. Staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended for a peaceful stay in the city。
I had an amazing stay at Hengshan Garden Hotel during my recent trip to Shanghai. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by the elegant Art Deco design that blended perfectly with modern aesthetics. The lobby was inviting, and the check - in process was smooth, thanks to the friendly and efficient staff.
My room was a haven of comfort. It was spacious, with a cozy bed that ensured a great night's sleep. The large windows offered a wonderful view of the city, and the decor was tastefully done. The amenities in the room were top - notch, from the high - speed complimentary Wi - Fi to the well - stocked mini - bar. The bathroom was spotless, equipped with high - quality toiletries and a great shower.
After checking out 6 different hotels in the area for my parents, I decided on Hengshan Garden hotel (Picardie building). The preview was great and we got a good price including lounge access. The newly renovated rooms in classic old school Shanghai style are very nice and quiet. The bathroom was kept nice and clean. The breakfast was good although more geared towards Chinese guest than Western.
The beds were super comfortable. The room had a great view of the park and despite being on a busy intersection, there was no noise coming into the room (this may have more to do with the fact 80% of the cars in Shanghai are electric so there is no noise).
The location is excellent. You can walk through Xujaihui park and get to all the shopping malls like Grand66, IFC and Metro city. There are so many places to eat, drink and shop in the area. Walk along Hengshan road under the trees around the French Concession.
The hotel itself has a very nice garden behind the main building with a small pagoda and pond to sit and relax.
The only real negative is that even though we clearly agreed multiple times that my parents would have a late check out as their flight was very late, they were literally kicked out the room. This was really quite upsetting as they are in their 80's. Totally unacceptable. Alice and the staff did apologize but clearly internal communication is terrible. Especially for an hotel this caliber and having all the amazing communication tools available in China, this really left a bad taste in our mouth.
So great hotel but confirm, confirm confirm.
Note this is newly renovated building next to the main hotel which is older.
The room itself left much to be desired. While the space was decent, the layout was chaotic and lacking in ambiance. The bathroom fixtures were subpar, with weak water pressure and a lack of basic supplies. The leisure facilities were equally disappointing. The air conditioning in my room was old and inefficient, struggling to maintain a comfortable temperature. The TV had limited channels and poor picture quality, making it almost unwatchable. The gym equipment was outdated and poorly maintained.I had high expectations for my stay at your hotel, but these issues with the room facilities and noise levels greatly diminished my overall experience. I sincerely hope you take these problems seriously and make the necessary improvements to enhance the quality of your guests' stays.
My recent stay at the administrative building of this so-called five-star hotel was an absolute disaster. I was utterly shocked and extremely dissatisfied, and I feel compelled to share my experience to warn others.Disappointing Dining ExperienceThe hotel’s dining quality was nowhere near what was advertised. The breakfast buffet was a complete letdown. The options were scarce and unappetizing—stale bread, lukewarm noodles, and fruits that looked like they had been sitting out for days. The staff were slow to clear used utensils or refill drinks, creating a chaotic and uncomfortable dining atmosphere. This hotel’s administrative building is simply not worth the time or money. From the disorganized environment and facilities to the unpalatable food, the neglected environment, and the lackluster service, every aspect fell short of expectations. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, this is a place to avoid. I will never stay here again and strongly urge others to think twice before choosing this hotel.
Was nice and clean
Really comfortable and large building. Spacious rooms with equipment and a sumptuous mattress in the bed. Very richly assorted meals at breakfast while continental dinner was good but not unforgettable. Well placed to reach the city center. Not the newest furnishing but definitely worth going if you want space and service.
The hotel deducted a deposit of 1000RMB upon check in and said that they will refund this amount. However, my credit card was charged in full and never refunded this amount. I should have asked for a receipt of refund upon check-out but I trusted the receptionist when she said it's already refunded. However when I checked with my bank it is not.
The Hengshan Garden is a lovely grand hotel with an impressive reception area off which is the main breakfast and lounge/bar area. It is sited on one of Shanghai's noble streets with a metro station 5-10 mins walk away. All the staff we met were polite, helpful and spoke English. It has two towers of accommodation linked by a leisure complex and tennis pavilion. Its surrounding gardens with cherry blossom trees, lakes and pagoda are beautiful. Our bedroom had two comfortable queen beds, a separate bath /shower wet room, toilet and hand basin area, TWO chairs ( well done!!), an office area, large tv, espresso machine and kettle. We had access to the Executive Lounge which provided an excellent retreat after a busy day touring Shanghai. The buffet choices of hot or cold, Chinese / European fayre, alcoholic /soft drinks was first class. Its waitresses were exceptional and always eager to please and have a chat. This also applied to the breakfast buffet in the main part of the hotel. Spoilt for choice. The Hengshan provided us with an excellent welcome to our tour of China.
My husband, adult grandson and I stayed at the hotel for three nights last week. The hotel itself is nice, staff are friendly although communication had to mostly be done via Google translate. Breakfast was ok and perfectly adequate. However, there are no restaurants within walking distance although there is a bar over the road which serves pizza and chips. The hotel is a five minute walk away from the metro and it takes about 15 mins to reach the city centre. Our only complaint about the hotel is that our beds were just so uncomfortably hard that none of us had a decent night's sleep and I woke with terrible back ache every morning.
Staff were very friendly and accomodating
A comfortable hotel in a nice part of Shanghai. The staff did not speak a great deal of English and the amenities were OK rather than exceptional. The gym, however, is massive, and there is a large pool, tennis courts and lots of machines. Breakfast was not as extensive as in some business hotels, but certainly sufficient in range. Probably won't become my go-to hotel in Shanghai, but an interesting experience nonetheless.
great location with perfect facilities . room size are good and staff are very friendly and supportive . breakfast is good and you have proper options.room and all area are clean and rooms are sound proof. wifi connection is poor but you have to consider that you are in china !
While the common areas of the hotel were impressive, my stay in the room was unfortunately less than average. The hair dryer was old and barely worked and the lights had issues, randomly switching on during the night, which was quite disruptive. To make matters worse, the room wasn’t soundproofed and I could hear my noisy neighbor all night long.
Some of the reception staff also came across as unfriendly, which added to the disappointment while staff welcoming guests at the door were polite and friendly. Although the hotel is located in a high-end area, it was surprisingly difficult to find a restaurant nearby without needing to take a taxi. Overall, I wouldn't return to this hotel.
Very friendly staff!
Beautiful people with very friendly service!
We were most impressed by the art deco decor of this hotel, its well-kept garden, and politeness and helpfulness of its staff. The housekeeping was perfect!
