Heritage feel
Nothing
Love the location and the gracious style of the building and furnishings.
Since our visit last year the dining experience has deteriorated markedly. Guests were surprised to discover that meals were unavailable on some nights during our stay and, even then, the offering was very limited and over-priced. Breakfast was a set price of $35 a head, for which you received one dish, juice and one hot drink. Last year we were offered the full breakfast range with toast and jams, honey and other spreads, as well as additional tea or coffee. A tiny bowl of muesli and two cups of coffee cost our friend $41.50; which convinced us to travel into Yarra Glen for an alternative start to each morning. Staff cut-backs meant that the reception desk was unmanned after 5 p.m. which caused bother to a number of guests.
Spacious grounds and old world charm
Not kept up on the exterior and no pool
Location and garden space
Had a strong stale smell as u enter the room and room was full of ants … charging mobile device was hard as access to a power point unit was very limited,
Beautiful setting and historic building, feels like living in a different era. Very relaxing.
The hotel is outdated and would benefit from a good refurbishment. Staff is kind and welcoming but opening hours are reduced (it is an issue in the valley in general), the restaurant was not open during our stay due to weekly closure. Cleanliness can be very much improved.
Great service by reception staff
Buildings needed general tidy up, lotsa dust and cobwebs
Garden was bit overgrown. Just saw one gardener unsure how they were to manage the whole garden
Bathroom lovely, beds comfortable
Curtain fell down behind bed on 1st night. Rang after hours, said someone would come and attend. Not attended to until house keeping came next day.
Couch was very worn where people sit - needs new foam/padding.
Staff was amazing
The transportation is really difficult
Eleanor’s – Chateau Yering
I booked Eleanor’s Restaurant within the Chateau Yering complex for our wedding anniversary. It was a surprise for my husband that I had great expectations of, given the impressions their website offers… the photography of fine dining and so on. When we arrived, there was no one to greet us. Several minutes later a staff member came out of the kitchen and jumped out of her skin at the sight of me. I explained who we were and that we had a booking which she then relayed to another staff member who then questioned – are you dining with us tonight? So, I repeated myself.
Finally, we were seated in what was literally the worst table in the restaurant. I felt like we were in Harry Potter’s cupboard. There was no view, no light, no ambience. Already I was embarrassed that I had brought my husband here on such a special occasion. I was so overdressed it was humiliating. The staff were dressed very casually and communicated in a manner that was beyond casual. It would have been entirely appropriate at the local pub, but I was paying big bucks here and the photo of the waiter on their website shows him correctly holding and pouring wine.
The staff member who served us, once she had composed herself and put her skin back on, picked up our wine glasses and poured the wine into them from the air whilst her dirty fingerprints made their way around each glass.
By now I am wishing we had just gone to the local pub.
Food wise we thought we would do an entrée and main. The entrees were not too bad – quail and kingfish. Then we had the kangaroo for mains. This was a mistake. Kangaroo is challenging to cook perfectly, and I should have ordered something safer.
The memory that stays with me is that we had the worst table yet were the best dressed couple in the restaurant. Others who had nice tables were quite casually dressed and stared at us as though we did not belong there.
In a nutshell that is how I felt the whole night… we just did not belong there.
Location Great. Didnt do breakfast
Distance from carpark to room very difficult especially for me with a leg in a cast
Beautiful, turn of the century architecture. Very comfortable.
The staff and the grounds
Expensive breakfast and the property grounds need upgrading.
