the convenient location near the airport and stores/restaurants nearby
I had booked 4 nights at the MainStays in Grand Rapids, MI. I was taking my son to a sports tournament and picked that hotel because the room had a kitchen. I needed to cook healthy meals during the tournament.
My son and I flew in and checked in late (10pm) on Thursday 2/05. We were given room #115 on the ground floor. When I opened the door there was a strong smell of cigarettes even though this is a non-smoking hotel.
I reported it and we were changed to room #315. I realized the elevator was out of service even if the Front Desk staff acted as if they were not aware.
My son and I had to carry our luggage to the 3rd floor. I quickly noticed how dirty the kitchen area was. There were dishes in the dishwasher but they looked unwashed. There was only 1 dinner plate and 1 fork. In the cabinets, the dishes were stained and dirty worst of all was a frying pan full of cooking oil and burnt food. See attached photos.
I also noticed a missing lightbulb on the light on the nightstand.
The gas fireplace wasn’t working. The carpet looked filthy. I knew we couldn’t stay more than one night and checked out first thing in the morning.
Everything the fact that it's look like a little apartment
This place has the best layout among the extended stay places in the area. It's not a standard hotel room with a kitchenette added on, but a full apartment-like layout with separate bedroom and living room/kitchen/dining area. Great location too with fast food, restaurants, grocery and liquor store within 5-10 minutes walk if you don't have a car. Or if you do, it's right off the main 28th street area with everything available within in a short drive. Walmart, Target, etc. Good place if you have to stay in the area awhile. Kitchen has very minimal supplies, but you can cook a stir-fry or make a sandwich. Bring a knife sharpener maybe.
I appreciated the spaciousness
It was very comfy
It was quiet
Smell.
Saw a dead roach in the gym facility
Large room
Broken elevator
Close to many stores and restaurants.
Kitchenette with decent fridge and ice maker was convenient.
Nice that the bedroom was separate from the "living room" with the pull out couch.
The room reeked of cigarettes upon entering and seemingly wasn't cleaned completely before we entered. There was a shower cap on the smoke alarm and a car air freshener in a vent that didn't help the smoke smell. We were too exhausted to go back down and seek out another room.
Over the course of the next two days, multiple other guests and strangers knocked on our door asking for different people. Seemingly all the doors had a 2"+ gap at the bottom that was large enough for someone to stick their hand through or possibly take a picture. Multiple people were getting in fights on sight with one particularly intense screaming match involving the front desk staff calling the police.
There was a lack of cooking utensils and only one pan that wasn't useful for the things we were trying to cook. Dishes in the dishwasher weren't clean and one plate had white powdery residue.
The hot tub that we planned on using was out of order.
There was no free breakfast, despite booking the hotel for that reason.
There was ongoing construction in the mornings and no warning at the concierge that this might affect our sleep since they got going before 9am.
Only the TV in the sitting area worked-- the one in the bedroom wouldn't connect to the cable.
Pull-out couch was broken and started folding on you if you sat all the way at the back of it (closest to backrest).
Not in a neighborhood with sidewalks; you need a car to navigate most places.
When I had to extend our stay for a night (because my friend I was with became ill), they didn't tell me how much they were charging me but agree to discount that night's stay because of the problems I mentioned. THEY CHARGED ME $30 THAN BOOKING ONLINE WOULD HAVE COST.
Long short, AVOID THIS PLACE unless you're desperate or you find a screaming deal online. Not worth more than $65/night, even with the kitchenette.
Rooms very spacious, clean, overall just good experiance
Wonderful staff and hard working housekeeping
