Completely Unacceptable – Poor Maintenance, Dirty Rooms, and Weak Management
Pros:

The location is good, staff are very friendly

Cons:

My stay at Crystalbrook Riley in Cairns was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have had, and it is completely unjustifiable given the high rates charged.

The property is in a visibly poor and neglected condition. Basic fixtures are worn out and poorly maintained — the wash basin was heavily scratched, and the mirror showed clear signs of rust. This is far below the standard expected from a hotel positioning itself at this level.

Cleanliness was shockingly unacceptable. The room was dirty upon arrival, with stains on the carpet, curtains, and bed sheets. There was hair on both the bed and in the bathroom, and the towels were damaged, including a hand towel with a large hole. Even the tissue box contained only a single piece of tissue, which reflects a complete lack of attention to basic housekeeping standards. This is not a minor oversight — it reflects a serious failure in housekeeping overall.

The situation in public areas was no better. The gym appeared completely neglected, with dust and stains covering the equipment. The treadmill, in particular, was visibly dirty, clearly not cleaned for an extended period. This raises serious concerns about overall hygiene practices in the hotel.

Service was equally disappointing. The night reception staff lacked professionalism and proper training. During check-in, we inquired about a one-night upgrade to match the room category booked for the remainder of our stay. We were told there was no availability, only to later discover that upgrades were being given to others. This inconsistency is unacceptable and reflects poor management.

Dining options are extremely limited and inadequate. There are no proper lunch offerings — only a breakfast buffet and à la carte dinner — which is highly inconvenient for guests staying on property.

What is most frustrating is the hotel’s dismissive response to these issues.

4 star hotel
Pros:

Perfect location, nice swimming pool area, amazing shower in the room, convenient room

Cons:

There were no handles on the wardrobe doors, so you had to bend over to open them from the bottom of the door, which was inconvenient.
Breakfast was not very good. The first time I came to the restaurant they asked me if I wanted tea or coffee and charged me for that - I had no idea you have to pay for your coffee if you do not make it on your own. They canceled the bill when I said I got confused but the waiter should say that it is not for free.
The pastry was not fresh. Fruits not ripe. The variety of choice quite poor.

Great facilities, interesting experience.
Pros:

The facilities were great.

Cons:

Our room was raided on the 2nd night by Cairns Police with the help of hotel staff at 11.30pm. I was detained and removed from the room while my partner was questioned in bed for a domestic abuse report. After both of us saying it was the wrong room. It was confirmed they were looking for room 533 not 503, police apologised and left which was fine they were just doing their job. Hotel staff however never apologised or mentioned anything about it in the moment or at check-out. Also for context, my partner has been in the country for 2 weeks and we were staying there for mother day, we had also switched rooms with my mother & I am glad it wasn't her that had been raided.
