Overrated
Pros:

Location was good, main hotel grounds were lovely too
Friendly service when ordering at the bar and checking in.

Cons:

⚠️ Mosquito Concern

We stayed for one night at the conclusion of our tour of Belgium. Unfortunately, our experience fell considerably short of expectations.

The room was notably dark and lacked the level of comfort, character and amenities one would reasonably anticipate for the price paid.

A notice on the window advised guests not to open it due to the presence of mosquitoes. Regrettably, the room already appeared to be infested. We were bitten repeatedly during the night and both suffered significant reactions by morning. Upon closer inspection, we also noticed numerous dark marks on the wallpaper which appeared to be squashed mosquitoes, suggesting this may be an ongoing issue.

We raised our concerns with reception at check out. While staff stated that they would investigate the matter, there was little indication of genuine concern and, unfortunately, any remedial action came too late to assist us.

In addition, the hairdryer was of an exceptionally poor standard. The power button had to be held down continuously during use, making it impractical and frustrating to dry one's hair properly.

Overall, the accommodation did not represent good value for money, and regrettably we would not consider returning.

Below average and suprisingly shortsighted
Pros:

The location was wonderful, the premises were clean.

Cons:

There were many potential health and safety hazards. The Duke’s Residence building hallways were decorated with intensely clashing patterned wallpapers and carpets in narrow, almost caricaturistically twisty corridors, with ceiling protrusions around seemingly every corner. The corridors also had steps sprinkled throughout, often appearing unexpectedly. Finding your way to the room felt like navigating a fever dream. If I found it overwhelming, I cannot imagine how elderly guests might experience it.

Additionally, none of the stairs had safety strips, and the busy patterns made it difficult to distinguish individual steps. Combined with the narrow hallways and unexpected level changes, this created an environment that felt unnecessarily difficult to navigate. Again, I cannot fathom how challenging this must be for elderly guests or for anyone with neurological conditions or visual impairments.

The room itself was adequate, but the shower did not drain properly, and the shower floor remained wet even the following morning after use. This resulted in an unpleasant smell in the bathroom. Having such a basic necessity malfunction at a hotel that positions itself at this level is difficult to understand.

Additionally, there were no mirrors in the bedroom, the only one available is a bathroom mirror above the sink. This becomes inconvenient when your partner is using the bathroom, as there is no alternative place to get ready. One would expect a full length mirror in the bedroom but this is not available, meaning you could not even properly check your outfit before heading out.

These are such fundamental hotel amenities that even far more modest establishments typically provide without issue. It was therefore quite surprising to encounter these shortcomings at a hotel that positions itself much higher than your classic middle class chains.
