Disappointing.
Pros:

Administration is badly organised. There needs to be liaison between reservations, spa and guest services. Staff very courteous and pleasant. Expected a better level from Belmond.

Excellent
Pros:

We rather feared this might be an example of faded grandeur - a hotel past its best. We need not have worried. Reid's Palace is still outstanding in terms of ambience, guest service, food and the detailed care and attention all members of the hotel team provide. From the moment we arrived every member of staff was friendly and welcoming and remained so throughout our stay. The room was fine with regular servicing, the breakfasts were excellent and the staff on duty for breakfast were outstanding. Dinner at the Villa Cipriani was a real pleasure and the guest relations staff were well informed and helpful. The hotel has real charm and distinction and is not just another high quality but anonymous establishment in which you could be anywhere. The gardens are a treat to walk round and it's not far to walk into Funchal (if it is there are more taxi ranks in Funchal than I have seen in any other town). There are quite a few hotels in Funchal which offer high quality service but none can match Reid's history and the distinction which comes from many years of excellence.

Outstanding hotel with outstanding staff.
Pros:

Once again, a fabulous experience, largely down to the outstanding staff that give such a warm welcome.

I made an unplanned visit from the cruise I was on, as I have previously done so and had such a lovely time, decided to repeat it.

From entering and being shown to the poolside restaurant, I was looked after incredibly well which was comforting as a solo traveller.

The pool and the views are outstanding, a wonderful setting to enjoy lunch.

I ordered the Salmon sandwich, which came with both smoked and cooked salmon on a bed of lettuce and horseradish sauce. The chips that accompanied it were the best I’ve ever tasted. My piña colada, was both pretty and tasty (and strong!)

As it was low season, I did not feel rushed, and in fact if I had not felt a little heady from the drink, would’ve stayed for another.

Thank you, Reid’s for making my visit so memorable. I hope to revisit and stay sometime.

A Truly Delightful Hotel
Pros:

Reid's Palace truly feels like an institution and if you can afford it it provides a luxurious but comfortable hotel. The place oozes a calm ambience, with beautiful flower arrangements at every turn. Our room was one of the more modest ones but was still sumptuous. A huge bed, beautiful bed linen and free soft drinks in the minibar. Each evening a small gift is left for you in the room.

Breakfast is plentiful and varies=d and can be taken inside or outside the dining room.

The grounds are gorgeous, and there are three lovely pools and plenty of sun loungers. Ad hoc drinks, snacks and gifts are brought around to all guests lounging by the pool.

Pros:

It’s always the best experience. Every year, it never disappoints expectations. The pool, the sea, the accommodation, the common areas, the gardens, the scenery, the staff, the breakfast — everything is “6-star” quality.

Another amazing stay at the incredible Reids Hotel
Pros:

Just returned from another amazing stay at Reids. The hotel was elegant and beautiful as always, and the staff incredibly friendly, helpful and professional.
A big thank you to Carlota for all her help and advice during our stay, and to all the staff for their excellent attention to detail and perfection in every way.
Our Seaview room in the original part of the hotel was stunning and really made our stay special with lovely views of the garden and sea.
Breakfast was a delicious delight every morning, and a big thank you to the staff for their happy friendly welcome each morning.
The gardens were very tranquil and restful and made for a relaxing daily walk, and an early evening glass of wine spot 😊.
Pool area was sublime and relaxing and thank you to the pool staff for their help and attention to every detail.
This was an amazing break in the sun, away from the stress of the daily grind, spent with a fun and fantastic group of staff in an incredibly beautiful hotel. Thank you.

Nice surprises they don‘t mention on their website
Pros:

A perfect, relaxing stay, friendly and helpful staff, excellent pool, nice surprises such as the little presents in your room every night or the drinks reception with the manager. There is a free shuttle to town several times a day and it also is just a short walk to a nice promenade with very good restaurants. Don‘t miss the falconer visiting the hotel every day - say hello to Jimmy, the harris hawk.
The garden is fantastic, don‘t miss the free tour.

Exquisite
Pros:

The hotel, facilities and service are just fabulous. From the moment you arrive and are greeted at the door you know you're in for a great stay. It's the little touches that truly make the experience; canapés with drinks in the bar, water brought to you when you sit by the pool, eggs just the way you like them at breakfast and the little treats each evening when the beds are turned down. We will be back.

Exceptional care that truly sets Reid’s Palace apart.
Pros:

Our recent stay at Reid’s Palace became unforgettable for unexpected reasons.
During our visit, my husband fractured his kneecap. What could have turned into a very stressful experience was handled with extraordinary professionalism, empathy, and genuine care from the entire team.
From immediately calling a doctor and arranging a wheelchair, to cancelling our reservations through the concierge, moving us to a more accessible room, and even accommodating us for dinner at William Restaurant despite my husband not being allowed to straighten his leg — everything was managed seamlessly and with kindness.
A special thank you goes to Helga from the Guest Experience team. She originally helped us arrange a wonderful program, and the moment she learned about the accident, she proactively cancelled everything for us. When I called to request the cancellations, it had already been taken care of. That level of attentiveness is rare and deeply appreciated.
Everyone at reception was incredibly warm and supportive (unfortunately I do not know all their names), and the team at William Restaurant was equally wonderful.
This is exactly what sets Reid’s Palace apart from other hotels — not just the beauty of the property, but the people.
We are truly grateful for all the help and support. Thank you to the entire team.

Variable service which in my opinion depends on your physical characteristics
Pros:

The main problem I had with this hotel was what I perceived as several micro aggressions from a minority of staff. Many staff were friendly and helpful but more than one were not.

Other less important issues that could also be due to visiting in low season affected our stay:
- The room was dated and a lower standard than other similar hotels particularly given the price paid and the facilities did not match the number of people the booking was for.
- We were informed that the spa was closed only after booking. It was not clear whether or not the reduced facilities were reflected in the price.
- I paid a premium room rate for late check out and potential for room upgrade. Neither of these were available at the time unfortunately (at least not for us). There were other benefits to the premium rate such as transfers and a food credit. The credit was mentioned in the booking confirmation which I had not registered but it was not mentioned again by any staff at check in and multiple other interactions until check out time. They refused to credit any of the money I had already spent in the hotel restaurants and the manager did not come to speak with me.
- The lack of late check out was supposed to be alleviated by the pool facilities. There was nowhere for me to help my young girls to get ready other than send the nine year old into the ladies showers to look after the five year old. The men's showers were on another floor and did not have any towels available. There was a machine available to dry swimming costumes before packing them but it was not working.
- There were not many pool attendants and those that were there were not very attentive outside their immediate vicinity. You have to chase them down whenever you wanted something. They were usually very polite and friendly when you did get to speak to them. They were generally very busy servicing the pool closest to them and did not get to the freshwater pool very often.

As Mary Poppins might have said …
Pros:

Practically perfect in almost every way! A fabulous birthday break for my wife (and me!). Wonderful location, this hotel fully deserves its stellar reputation. Every member of staff is a credit to Reid’s Palace and its ethos. The guided tour of the original part of the hotel was fascinating, afternoon tea on the terrace was a must-do, and our sea view room was superb. One often-repeated gripe of mine is the over-bath shower. For a hotel where its core audience is in the advanced years, these are simply too awkward to get in and out of. Modern, walk in showers, please!
