The perfect graduation celebration!
Pros:

This was booked as a surprise celebration for my graduation and this was the perfect place to celebrate! From start to finish our stay was spectacular, with attention to detail, sensational service and beautiful decor. We visited the beautiful spa and had a luxurious massage by such a welcoming and professional team. We also had a 3 course meal followed by breakfast the next morning which was absolutely scrumptious! Our room and the hotel itself was spotless! The grounds are breathtaking with the ability to walk across, in and around the woodland area, finishing off in the terrace enjoying a lovely cocktail. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone looking for a luxurious escape in the countryside with two cities and towns not too far away. Our stay was nothing short of perfection. A trip I’ll never forget, we’ll be back!

Pros:

We spent the night there as a birthday celebration and loved the place. Lovely grounds and atmosphere. Food was nice both at dinner and breakfast. Room was warm as it’s a listed building and air conditioning not allowed but they supplied fans which really helped. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Recommended.

Beautiful venue, great staff, customer service from events could be better
Pros:

On the day the service was brilliant. Luke was attentive, discreet and personable and much appreciated. Unfortunately the lead up could have been better. I arranged a viewing / visit and they hadn’t planned for my arrival. I heard nothing between the contract/payment and when I turned up on the day. The venue itself is gorgeous and the room was well set up and had air con. A beautiful setting, nice food but customer service from the booking team could have been better.

Inefficient
Pros:

We have just returned from having afternoon tea at Down Hall. It is not a cheap experience and we expected a good service. It was far away from what I expected. We were booked for 2.30 and sat at the table until 2.55 pm and then had to find a member of staff to attend the table. The young lady that arrived asked if we wanted tea.coffee or water and I had to ask if she could open the champagne and pour. Tea and coffee came out and we were told it would be another 5mins before the sandwiches would be ready. The time passed and we had to ask again how long it would be. It was a further 15 minutes before they arrived. Eventually other staff appeared. If an establishment offers afternoon tea they need to be aware of their customers. It was a disappointing visit and could have been so much better as the venue is lovely

Anniversary stay.
Pros:

We had a lovely stay for our anniversary. They upgraded our room which was lovely. It was quite hot in the room so they gave us another room which was much cooler. It was no trouble to them at all.

The grounds were lovely as we're the staff. Would definitely stay again. Thank you.

Pros:

מלון מרשים באחוזה אנגלית עתיקה, חדר גדול ומרווח עם מיטה גדולה. הצוות מאוד שירותי ואדיב. אווירה של יוקרה ומורשת בריטית.

Cons:

Excellent!
Pros:

Excellent as always. The staff are impeccably dressed and their overall professionalism is outstanding. They go above & beyond to customise your stay so you really enjoy your time there. I have stayed there a lot. I have been given free suite upgrades on numerous occasions. This hotel is faultless. Comfort & style makes you feel very relaxed. You can have a quiet nights stay in the peaceful bedrooms. A wonderful woodland to walk through with deer, muntjac, pheasants, hares & squirrels. I have spent lots of Christmases, Easter’s , bonfire nights & Summers here. I highly recommended Down Hall. The ultimate experience from start to finish. Thank you Down Hall.

An uncomfortable night
Pros:

I visited on a corporate away day where we stayed for one night. Giving this a two star rating for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, the south facing rooms on second floor were unbelievably hot compared to everywhere else; even at 4 in the morning when the weather outside was cool. Hotel provided fans, but these weren’t enough to offset the greenhouse feeling of the room. Understand it’s an old building, but the room was not fit for inhabitants. I checked out before dawn.
Secondly, there were bugs in all 3 courses of my food at the Garden Kitchen restaurant.
The one big tick was that the staff member that served us food and drinks on the terrace in the evening was friendly, professional and attentive. There was a refined feel about the common areas. The grounds and interiors were impressive and kept well.

Lovely that’s rough around the room edges
Pros:

Overview…..
The approach: Heading up the driveway you are met with the spectacular sight of the main hotel and spa. It looks like something from a film set. Lots of good parking, so no scramble to force your car on a grass verge.

Reception: was excellent, staff provided a very easy check-in and information clear and concise.

Staff: ALL staff in both the hotel and spa were attentive, polite and courteous. Nothing was too much, all doing their best to assist you.

Restaurant: very nice atmosphere, good service. Food was excellent though portion sizes were limited. I would always recommend additions with any meal.

Spa: All staff were OUTSTANDING. My wife and I had a massage and both massage girls were exceptional. Both said they were new to Down Hall. They’re a clear asset to the company, so management please applaud their efforts.
Facilities: Something that could benefit the spa would be the addition of an outdoor pool, something offered at many other spa’s. Many conversations were overheard mentioning a similar point. The only water relaxation is the jacuzzi which can get busy. This leaves you with just a sauna, steam room (broken on our visit), or sun-beds outside if not having a treatment.

Rooms: here the problems begin…..the heat. None of the rooms have air-conditioning, so please be aware of this when booking for a summer visit. A fan was provided by reception, however it didn’t add much to cool the room any further.
Cleanliness: Our actual room was lovely and clean, soft bedding, well hoovered carpet, clean toilet and bathroom floor, along with the sink and mirror. However, the shower glass looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a while and the bedroom window frames were littered with dead bugs. …..Something a cleaner could easily fix.
The fan we were provided with to cool the room was also filthy and covered in thick dust too. Again, something the cleaner needs to resolve by giving it a good wipe…... Another easy quick fix.
It was evident that the shower drainage was very slow resulting in the shower tray to fill with water. When checked, it was because of a hair blockage that was limiting the water flow. This is an easy fix for a cleaner to remove the blockage and flush through drained hole.
Finally, when having a shower, it was evident that much of the shower head was blocked with limescale. I managed to resolve the problem, but it’s something a cleaner should pick up….again this is another easy fix.

From our visit, the hotel/spa was wonderful, an excellent quiet hideaway, however based on the issues in the room, staying overnight can be pricey if you consider value for money. Many issues did result in me becoming a cleaner, which isn’t what I signed up for. The fixes are easy to resolve..

Having said all of this, I liked my stay and genuinely feel this could easily be 5* spa. All the comments made above are mainly feedback and a critical analysis, NOT act as complaints.

Cheers

Hospitality the way you want it
Pros:

The hotel is of course lovely, our room particularly had french doors leading out to the gardens, on a lovely July night it was a real bonus. However its the staff that make this place, they interact and nothing was too much for them. The room we had didnt have air con but remained cool enough because of its location to sun, it, i guess could be an issue if you face sun and its hot. Its our 2nd vist and we will visit again.

Music on the lawn
Pros:

What a gorgeous set up, sun, music, drink, great food and very friendly staff. Olivia was our waitress and she was fantastic - very attentive and smiley. There was also a young boy called Louie who was great, smiling and singing away with us as he was serving. A great evening which we will be booking again!
