Booked 2 nights at The Midlands to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and Valentines. We specifically booked as a treat and with it having a Spa it was perfect for a relaxing getaway.
Unfortunately this was not the case, my partner rang ahead to rebook the spa with his treatment and was told a note had been added to the system... this was a complete lie after being told on arrival the spa was fully booked which ended in a lot of back and forth to finally be told okay just come for 4pm. Not a great start. We then get into the spa to find the jacuzzi not working, pool absolutely freezing and the salt/sauna room to be squished with guests.
We then were woken from 3am from rowdy next door guests which we politely asked if security could have a word, this took 30 minutes for them to knock and for noise to stop for 5mins then continue until 6am. When we called reception to speak to the manager we were given a "its out of our control and it is valentines" which has no relevence. When my partner requested a change in room or a refund there was no apology just a "well it sounds like it would be best for you to go" so we had to cut our stay short by a full day and night. The experience with the lady who checked us out was better than the full ordeal with the night manager, she couldn't stop apologising and wished us a good day. We then got home to a full charge for the full 2 nights which is totally unacceptable, as if we weren't already feeling down enough. Truly beautiful hotel but night manager definitely needs work in his customer service.
Would not normally book a 4 star hotel for a short city break, but decided to so for a more comfortable experience with room size and access to a swimming pool.
So bear in mind this is a grand and historic building that has its original windows. So the rooms are on the cold side, and the noise of the city centre are going to wake light sleepers.
Booked a junior suite with two queen beds for a family of four. Probably wouldn’t do this again as beds a bit small for us, but the beds were firm and good standard. Air con systems are noisy. Lobby bar in looks the part but we didn’t use it
Did use the swimming pool (5:30pm to 7pm for family swim, otherwise I think it’s only for spa users) and it was good. If a little cold, so I stayed in the jacuzzi!
Only stayed at the Midland because we were going to the Magic Show there.
Magic Show was brilliant.
The Midland was a lovely hotel. Our room was amazing, but it was cold, despite having a plug in radiator. The two beds in the room were very small even though the room was large. The pillows were very hard. Breakfast was excellent and nice to have a late check out. However, rang ahead to see if I could book a treatment and my husband and son use the pool, was told can’t give you any information until you check in. When we checked in we were told the pool was complimentary no need to book. Location excellent.
We booked a premium room which as it turned out was massively overpriced and not worth the money. The room was tatty, dated and poorly maintained. First thing we noticed was that there was a cheap oil filled free standing electric radiator plonked in the room which hardly suggested a premium experience. Cocktails in the bar were without doubt the worst we have ever experienced - quite disgusting, so I'd suggest avoiding them as well. Morning breakfast was hopeless, only one coffee machine was working so there were long queues to get a drink. Elements of the buffet breakfast were quite foul, stewed strange tasting mushrooms and sausages that had seen better days. As soon as we were travelling home , we realised that we'd left personal possessions in the room so we contacted the hotel immediately. Do you think they would go and take a look for us - no they wouldn't! "We'll get back to you in three days time" they said, which they didn't. Over a week later we had to chase them for an update and they said our possessions 'weren't there'. How could this be, our beds were probably still warm when we notified them, so where had our possessions gone ? There is no doubt in my mind that they were either too lazy to investigate properly , or that they have thieves amongst their staff. This hotel is just abysmal , the staff are completely complacent, with a couldn't care less attitude. I'll be reporting my missing goods to the police. We did have a good time in Manchester though, In spite of the efforts of the Midland Hotel to spoil our trip.
Save your money! I thought this was going to be a luxury experience & it was bog standard! Room is lovely but basic and dated for a 4 star hotel. Didn’t sleep at all due to it being so noisy. Toilet doesn’t flush properly and staff are fine but so cold towards customers. I had booked early check in as I had calls to make, this wasn’t available at the time & the lady serving me did not care.
Not worth the money, downstairs is lovely but everything else needs a serious upgrade
Absolute joke, was told on the phone when booking we are guaranteed a slot in the spa upon check in, checked into the hotel at 3pm as that is the check in time. Was told to ring the spa to book our slot to then be told at 3.25pm there’s nothing left for today or tomorrow!
Paid over £250 for one night to not even be able to use the Spa
Another lovely stay for our one-night visit. We stayed in room 610 which was warm, clean and perfect for what we needed.
Breakfast and spa staff were great as always; and even the fabulous chef at breakfast said 'good morning'. Breakfast food was delicious and plenty of choice. Our favourite part of our stays at this hotel is always the breakfast!
However, I must mentioned that our stay this time unfortunately, fell short of the normal and welcoming standards we have previously received. Staff at check-in were not as friendly; and when the receptionist informed about the £50 pre-authorisation payment, I questioned this due to no information being given to us prior arrival. The receptionist said 'it's for everyone' and continued to ignore my question. As a previous Guest Relations Manager, this cold service is not what I would expect from a 4* hotel. I would also expect some sort of notice on the booking confirmation; or failing this, for this to be an option 'charge' due to the lack of information.
Overall, would recommend staying! But definitely think some staff training for receptionists wouldn't go a miss.
Freezing room once again. Promised a heater for my 76 year old mother and still waiting after two days. Asked for porridge at breakfast, it never arrived. Extremely long wait at the bar. Chased drinks as not very busy but still not arrived and they’ve run out but did not bother to let us know. Our second visit we will lot be back for third.
Excellent and professional service at the bar as always and in particular - a lady named Mair was outstanding: extremely attentive, well-spoken, courteous body language and authentic facial expression.
Booking in was fine, room was small and too hot. Heating was from a plugin electric heater, and a wall control. Unplugged heater and turned down wall control, but wall control was pretty much locked.
Really loud noise from the external Heat exchangers from either AC or kitchen fridges all night. Off/on/off/on. Couldn't get any decent sleep at all.
Beautiful hotel in the city centre. Rooms bigger than some in city centres though bathroom a bit bland. Delicious cocktails in the lobby bar. Omelette made to order for breakfast but I did get a bit peeved by the family taking selfies of the buffet when I wanted to get to the coffee machine.
Love staying here.
A reminder at reception when checking in about booking your slot at the spa asap would be helpful and perhaps a few visuals on the wall when using the tred mill at the gym.
Booked a Superior King room.
Arranged for parking around the corner which turned out to be underneath the Novotel.
The Midland is a beautiful grand building perfectly located in Manchester. This was my first visit and first impressions were good. Staff were friendly and helpful, check in was smooth.
I took the lift to the 5th floor and I was initially impressed by the width and size of the corridors leading to my room. The marble or marble effect wall cladding gave a luxury (maybe dated) feel. However on closer examination all paintwork was tired or poorly done.
My room 546 was massive, very grand. The bathroom was small and the wardrobe was ample for me. The room had a coffee machine, complimentary water and teas. Minibar which was obviously chargeable.
The room seemed cold and noisy. There was a small portable electric radiator in the corner which was on and set to maximum. There didn't appear to be any other heating apart from the air-conditioning which refused to work.
I pulled the net curtains to one side to look outside and found that one of the sash windows was open by about an inch. The very same window that has no handles or locks and carries a sign stating that the windows don't open. Using a great deal of brute force the window eventually closed with a thud. Suddenly the noise decreased. There was still noise but I was in the centre of a city.
On closer examination, again whilst the room was large and grand it was tired. This also carried through to the bathroom too.
Towel rail hanging off the wall
Kettle broken with LED open to the elements.
Bathroom extractor not working
Desk lamp switch broken and loose.
Shower drains so slow that the water builds and I had to cut my shower short in fear of it overflowing.
So whilst it did for my one night stay the Midland was not what I expected. Such a shame.
I love this hotel. I stayed for my Birthday and was going to the theatre in Manchester. The Palace Theatre, Opera House and Bridgwater Hall are all within walking distance.
The ambience of the hotel is always lovely and the bar is buzzing.
We upgrade our room which was spacious, comfortable and clean.
Staff were helpful and friendly. There was an issue with the dressing gown that was very quickly resolved.
We didn’t stay for breakfast preferring a leisurely start to the day.
There are a number of car parks within walking distance of the hotel.
Would happily recommend
Booked 1 night for a 40th birthday, first room had no heating system as it was broken, very small radiator in a large room so it was very cold, went out for a meal and they moved our room, got back from the meal and the room was on the tram line, very loud. Moved rooms again, this time it was a downgrade (we paid for a king executive and was put in a basic double), the room heating was broken
, it was at 16c. At this point it is now 1am, the celebratory mood was ruined so we decided to drive home. The Midland always had a great reputation and was looking forward to staying but it just ruined what was meant to be a memorable night.
Fantastic Stay at The Midland Manchester
I had a brilliant stay at The Midland Manchester and couldn’t fault it. From check-in to check-out, everything was smooth and welcoming. I went along with my mum as a Christmas gift as she’s always wanted to stay here, because I told the reception lady (Charlie) this she upgraded our room and gave us two complementary drinks at the bar.
The hotel is beautiful and full of character, but still feels modern and comfortable. Our room was spotless, really comfy, and perfect for switching off after a busy day in the city.
The spa was lovely and a real highlight of the stay. Such a relaxing space and exactly what I needed — definitely worth visiting if you’re staying there.
What really made the experience stand out though was the staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful, but a special mention to Charlie, who was absolutely incredible. So kind, professional, and genuinely went the extra mile to make sure everything was perfect.
The location is spot on too — right in the centre and close to everything.
All in all, an amazing stay. I’d 100% stay here again and would recommend The Midland to anyone visiting Manchester.
Me and my boyfriend stayed at The Midland for one night to celebrate our anniversary. I had upgraded our room to the superior king room and the room was nice and we were given a card and rose petals which was nice. However the room was freezing cold when we first arrived. Breakfast was nice and the bar service was excellent and they were very accommodating and make whatever cocktail you like.
We were really looking forward to using the spa at the hotel and I had rang the hotel prior to arrival to ask if we could book a slot in the spa in advance for the evening. I was told that we couldn’t and we had to book a spa slot when we checked in. Check in opened at 3pm and we checked in at 3:15pm and as soon as we got to the room I rang the spa and was told all the spa slots for that evening were gone which was very disappointing so we could only use the spa for one hour the following morning. The pool was nice however the relaxation room you can only use if you have a treatment booked which again we were disappointed to learn. I had also rang the hotel prior to booking to check if we had bathrobes/slippers included in our room which I was told we did. When we got into the room we didn’t have any so I went back down to reception and then they did bring some up. For £200 a night, this wasn’t really ideal especially as I had rang to check these things prior to arrival.
Stayed here with 5 friend just before Christmas hotel is amazing great location
Hotel is spotless
Breakfast very good
We got a great deal with price
Would definetly return
Always a pleasure to return to the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
Standards never drop, beautiful room, service, and customer service skills 2nd to none. And not forgetting the fabulous Buffet Breakfast that literally has everything Top Notch!
Keep up the excellent work, and we look forward to returning to this wonderful hotel very soon.
This is a beautiful building in a great location and the rooms are well appointed. Staff on the whole are attentive and helpful and seem happy to be there. The bar area is a lovely place to get a drink or two and relax. One major gripe for me is that the breakfast room is not big enough to house all the guests when the hotel is at capacity. I had to sit in the bar area for my breakfast which meant carrying my plate of food through the "check out" queue and all the suitcases at reception. This took the shine off my stay - along with the fact that my shower didn't drain and I ended up stood in 2" of water. I also left something in the room and called the hotel to ask them about it... to be told they'd speak to house keeping and ring me back. I am still waiting for that call back several days later. I would stay here again due to the beauty and location of the place but it seemed that the hotel was buckling under the amount of guests they had so I'd stick to a midweek stay and avoid peak weekends if you can.
