We have been to this hotel before that is why we rebooked however the room cleanliness was disappointing. The hotel food is good and entertainment is good.service is good.
I’ve been coming to Porto Mare/Eden Mar twice each year since 2014 and always enjoy my experience. Unfortunately, it’s getting harder each year to find single occupancy availability. Your staff are amazing and look after everyone so well. I’ve had 2 delayed return journeys in the past 12 months and were allocated overnight accommodation in 2 of the Pestana hotels - not an enjoyable experience and food & service far inferior to PortoBay.
We spent 3 days at hotel and it was very pleasant, a lot of space in hotel, big rooms quiet hotel, music in the evening, polite staff, beautiful gardens.
Excellent resort, helpful staff, great entertainment, swimming pools are superb as are the breakfasts.
Have booked for a third time for 2027.
An excellent hotel with first class service. This is part of a large complex with two other hotels and has a range of restaurants. Breakfasts were busy but everything was available and replenished regularly by the very efficient staff. The hotel was kept spotless and there are numerous facilities available in the extensive grounds.
Our room was very good, not least because we were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a suite which was lovely. Large bedroom with a very comfortable bed, huge lounge and a very good bathroom. Fridge, kettle, toaster etc. This was all capped off by a very large south-facing balcony.
We only had b&b as the other options offered by our travel company seemed a little expensive and there are numerous restaurants with different cuisines close by. An interesting option was that the hotel offered an evening meal package at a generous discount that was much better value than that to be had by taking the half-board option with the travel company. This is well worth considering by anyone planning to visit this hotel.
The position of the hotel is very good for walking into Funchal and getting a cheap bus ride back to the front door - The Linha Verde routes all pass by.
If we are to visit Funchal again there is no doubt that this is the hotel that we would plump for.
I’m giving this hotel five stars because it’s generally better than very good, despite a couple of niggles which could be improved on. It’s on a campus with two other hotels/residences, linked by a common pool/garden area and internal corridors. We chose the Eden Mar for the indoor pools and the junior suite/with kitchenette arrangement as we were staying two weeks.
We had an overwhelmingly positive experience. The suite was huge – we were at the end of the corridor – with a full frontal sea view, separate bedroom, seating and dining areas and a large bathroom. There is loads of storage space and a reasonably well equipped kitchen although oddly no coffee maker or jug. Housekeeping was a little bit haphazard – towels taken away and not replaced, tea bags not replenished sometimes but the attention to recycling was commendable (we saw the housekeeping staff sorting out people’s rubbish).
The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The pools are stunning and the gardens attractive. There is a medium indoor lap pool and a lovely indoor/outdoor pool which was so large you could go on a swimming journey, and was a lovely temperature and a decent depth. It was never too busy, because it was spacious. Overall there seems to be more than enough space/loungers for everyone who wants them. Another reason we chose this hotel was the advertised pilates and yoga classes – which were good but not really with enough capacity for the demand. We booked on the Gardens tour which was really well led and very informative about Madeira not just the hotel gardens.
Our booking included breakfast which could be taken in either hotel restaurant. The offering was similar though the larger PortoMare Atlantida restaurant was more frenetic but with slightly more choice. Both offered freshly made omelettes which was a good choice as our one complaint was the hot food was often barely lukewarm. Otherwise great choice of fruit, cold cuts and breads. We did try the evening buffet one night but decided it wasn’t very good value.
There is evening entertainment in both bars. Some of it was quite good but a lot was middle of the road mush with the same musical duos cycling round different themed nights. There is an older demographic at these hotels who seemed to enjoy dancing to them though. It’s good to have the entertainment but it would be nice to have some distinct genres like jazz, blues, local folklore rather than all trying to please everyone with the same songs.
The hotel is near the Lido and the coastal path to Camara de Lobos. It is in fact near enough to walk into central Funchal if you are reasonably fit, or it is on several bus routes. There are plenty of restaurants nearby so there is no need to eat in the hotel and there is a Pingo Doce supermarket literally beneath the hotel where you can buy ready meals and all the usual stuff. It could be a bit noisy during the day and early evening; it’s above the Lido car park/supermarket/various cafes and the noise travels but most annoying was the extractor fan for one of the restaurants below the hotel which came on from 18.00-22.00 every night except Sunday and whined loudly. However I wouldn’t have swapped our room and amazing sea view for somewhere quieter.
There are several companies who organise tours close by on the main road, and there is a launderette in the shopping centre across the main road who do a reasonable price service wash. They were also installing a self-service launderette in the Lido car park while we were there! We would recommend the gelateria by the Lido car park too.
Stayed for 12 days in January. Our first time for a winter break and invited by a friend who treated us. A great location and excellent hotel, although rooms beginning to look a little dated and in need of some modernisation. The staff were really helpful and hotel facilities were very good. Plenty of opportunities to be involved in entertainment if required. My only negatinves would be the choice if options on the menus plus the heat of the cooked breakfasts. Would not recommend for young couples or families as Madeira is more suited for older people or keen walkers.
Lovely two week holiday at the Porto Mare resort. We were welcomed as repeat customers and cases brought to our requested suite which was fabulous with a large balcony with sunbeds and table and chairs. The weather was kind to us to be able to use these during our stay. We ate breakfast and dinner at Alfama and were served by very friendly and pleasant staff called Ricardo and Mauricio. Dinner was fantastic at this restaurant as buffets are not suitable for me with special dietary needs. We also ate at Horta twice and Il Bascilco once. The hotel pools were used daily and sometime twice a day. We also enjoyed the mini golf. My massage at the Spa was excellent and we loved having a kitchen to prepare light lunches and make coffee.A Nespresso machine would be a great asset to consider during the upcoming refurbishment. We ate at the veranda bar on arrival too and again it was excellent. We love this part of the resort and I feel safe eating under Paulo's watchful eye. Locally we ate at O chefe and Cris's place see separate reviews. We will come back to the Eden Mar again.
Fantastic hotel in a beautiful setting, on the coast and close to lots of shops and local amenities. There were plenty of good local restaurants and bars nearby, and a supermarket under the hotel complex. Funchal was a 25 minute walk, although buses and taxis were available. We stayed in a studio room on a bed and breakfast basis, with lovely views of the gardens and sea. The room was well equipped, clean and comfortable. The kitchenette was useful, although we only used it for drinks and snacks. We appreciated the decent sized fridge. Wi-Fi worked well. Wonderful gardens and plenty of loungers. Pools are large and very clean. Food was fresh, varied and good quality. Staff were friendly and helpful. We even got a complementary bottle of bubbly on my birthday. Only slight negatives - bathroom could do with some TLC, and towels were a bit thin. These were minor issues and certainly didn't detract from a very enjoyable holiday. This is a great base for exploring Madeira and we would definitely return.
Excellent Eden Mar. The suites was wonderful with a large balcony to enjoy some sunny days in January. The kitchen is a great asset to our holidays and this is main reason we stay the Eden Mar rather than the Porto Mare. We swam in the two indoor pools and played mini golf. Very friendly staff in Alfama with service overseen by a very competent Maitre D. The food was excellent in the evenings for dinner and we also ate in Horta twice and Il Basilico once. The staff are excellent at this hotel and another reason for repeat visits year on year.
We stayed in one of the rooms at Eden Mar and enjoyed the views, gardens and the environment immediately. The food is excellent and the staff are hardworking and efficient. The climate was perfect for us and it was a pleasant 20 minute walk into the town. There is a great deal of competition around regarding hotels and restaurants but the Eden Mar holds its own. Some aspects of the room could benefit from refurbishment. A lovely place to relax and recharge!
We have really enjoyed our time at the Eden Mar. The hotel is very clean and tidy. The staff were all polite and helpful. We will be going there again
We come regularly to a junior suite at Eden Mar. It is like coming back home each time we visit. From the warmth of welcome, professional service, excellent accommodation and cleanliness, along with superb food and entertainment, for us this is the perfect relaxing holiday.
We thoroughly recommend the Portobay group in general from our vast experience of a number of their accommodation venues.
We chose the Eden Mar because we have had such good experiences there in the past and this time was no different. Another great holiday.
Fantastic winter stay in this high class, we'll managed hotel in beautifully maintained gardens. The hotel is in a great position, making a nice walk into the city, while having plenty of shops/bars nearby. I wouldn't stay anywhere else now in Madeira, looking forward to next trip.
We stayed for a week in January, hotel was lovely, clean and comfortable. Indoor pools were warm. Food was great. Lots of choices in food. There were little pockets of quiet spaces. WiFi worked well
We have stayed many times at the Eden Mar and cannot fault it. The service, facilities and location are excellent and the food in the restaurants is superb. We only ate in the Alfama restaurant and the Il Basilica restaurant during our stay and enjoyed an excellent selection of well cooked and presented food with efficient service. The breakfast egg chef provided me with my perfectly cooked poached eggs each morning with other items available as required.
Service in the Oceana Bar was excellent with great entertainment on most nights, with many guests dancing to the music. There is also the option of the Portofino Bar in the Porto Mare hotel, where we saw a very good Abba tribute group.
We have already booked our next visit for 2027, all being well.
Although this was our first stay at the Suite Hotel Eden Mar, we had stayed at the adjoining Porto Mar hotel several times, so we were already familiar with the overall layout, restaurants and facilities of the complex and it took us no time at all to settle in, relax and start enjoying our holiday.
Our junior suite provided a great base, with its well equipped kitchenette, dining space and sitting area, supplementing the comfortable bedroom and spacious bathroom. The room also had a west facing balcony, which provided a lovely view of the sunset when the January clouds broke, but its orientation did mean that it was mid-afternoon before it got the benefit of the winter sun, so it could feel a bit cool when sat out earlier in the day, although this did not impact on us enjoying our outside space.
Service from staff was very good, with some staff remembering us from our previous visits, which was nice, and it was clear that this was not unique to us. The housekeeping staff deserve a special shout out as they ensure the cleanliness of the hotel throughout, and their attention to maintaining room standards and comfort was first class.
We ate dinner at the hotel 's buffet restaurant a few times, making the most of the great value the dinner voucher offer provides. Each meal provided a wide choice of great starters, mains and desserts, based on the theme for that evening. The buffet style breakfasts were also a great way to start the day.
During our stay we enjoyed several visits to the heated indoor pools, along with a couple of visits to the gym and a yoga class.
The location of the hotel is excellent too, close to the Lido and lots of great restaurants, and within walking distance to Funchal port and centre, and Camera de Lobos.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we have already rebooked for next January.
We liked the location, gardens, and the facilities.
Nothing it was all good.
Frokosten var ok
Veldig mye støy utenfor rommet på tidlig morgen
