Pros:

Im April 2026 verbrachten wir einige Tage im Palace Hotel do Bussaco – ein Haus mit beeindruckender äußerer Erscheinung und einem wirklich außergewöhnlichen historischen Ambiente. Besonders die prachtvollen Hallen, Aufenthaltsräume und der wunderschöne, weitläufige Park rund um das Hotel haben uns nachhaltig begeistert. Wer historische Gebäude mit authentischem Charme liebt, wird sich hier sofort wohlfühlen. Auch der Speisesaal, sowohl beim Abendessen als auch beim Frühstück, vermittelt eine ganz besondere Atmosphäre.

Man merkt jedoch auch, dass im Inneren bewusst viel Originalsubstanz erhalten wurde – teilweise vielleicht etwas zu konsequent. Die Zimmer wirken leider deutlich in den 60er-/70er-Jahren stehen geblieben und entsprechen aus unserer Sicht nicht dem heutigen 5*-Standard, eher einem einfachen 2–3*-Niveau. Zwei Einzelbetten, ältere Möbel, ein Fernseher ausschließlich mit portugiesischen Programmen und vor allem fehlendes WLAN auf den Zimmern wirken heute nicht mehr zeitgemäß. Internet gab es lediglich im Aufenthaltsraum bzw. der Bar, die eher an einen klassischen Gentleman’s Club erinnert. Auch das Badezimmer zeigte deutliche Gebrauchsspuren; selbst die bereitliegenden Frottee-Bademäntel konnten darüber nicht hinwegtäuschen. Der vergilbte Fönkasten setzte dem Ganzen leider noch die Krone auf.

Sehr gespannt waren wir auf das vielfach gelobte Abendessen. Geschmacklich blieb es für uns jedoch hinter den Erwartungen zurück. Sowohl die Entenbrust als auch das Fischfilet wirkten mit einem Bunsenbrenner bearbeitet, was man leider deutlich schmeckte. Insgesamt fehlte uns etwas Raffinesse, Farbe und geschmackliche Tiefe. Umso schöner war allerdings erneut das stilvolle Ambiente des Speisesaals.

Positiv hervorzuheben ist die Weinkarte, für die das Hotel bekannt ist. Die hauseigenen Weine erreichen teilweise beachtliche Preise. Unser Weißwein aus der unteren Preiskategorie – keineswegs günstig – überraschte als Jahrgang 2017 mit erstaunlicher Frische und...

Wer allerdings modernen 5*-Komfort und entsprechenden Service erwartet, könnte insbesondere bei Zimmern und Gastronomie enttäuscht werden

Cons:

The historical building and the forest are very beautiful, but hotel is understaffed, we experienced a queue on check-in and check-out, there were no porter to help with a baggage which is quite difficult to deliver from the parking to the entrance due to a gravel path. The building is old and not greatly maintained, smell of mould is badly present. Restaurant is overpriced, but has a good wine list.
On the bright side a breakfast is generous and delicious, and the terrace view is amazing.

A magnificent building steeped in history. The lounge and bar areas are warm and comfortable.

Cons:

The included breakfast was exceptional and plentiful, however, we thought that the other meals were too expensive for the quality and serving sizes. For an example, the same bread rolls offered free at breakfast cost 6 Euro each at night! The wines are also extremely expensive.
The hairdryers are very old style which are attached to the wall and don’t work properly.
