Our first impression of the hotel was not good. We expect a 5-star experience from a brand like Sofitel and this hotel did not deliver that. It was an old hotel in desperate need of a total renovation. Our confirmation and the follow up from Michel Creoff in reservations never told us that we were in the Corail building (so, of course, we went to the other building—Ocean). The buildings looked old and dirty, the white walls blackened in places. We saw walls that were peeling and wood trim in bad shape. Then, we were very disappointed our Deluxe Suite 58 m² with a view of La Manche (594€ using Accor points to offset the normal cost). The pictures did not show that the room was small but the closet was very large, using too many of our 58 m². We also had a very large balcony with two chaise lounges (and a very useful awning). Our view of La Côte Sauvage was good. The suite was air conditioned but it had trouble keeping up with the canicule (heat wave) during our stay. On our last night when we went to bed it was 26° degrees in the suite when the air conditioning thermostat was set for 19° degrees.
The staff had not personalized the room as we had requested of Michel Creoff. When we arrived, we needed housekeeping to do all of the things that we like in a room (and which all other hotels do before we arrive). Manon in housekeeping was very nice and dedicated herself to making the room to our liking, including bringing a beautiful orchid plant and arranging for a fruit plate to be delivered. A table was brought for Audre to use as her desk. The bed was remade the way we like it. Eventually the room was in good shape. The continuing problem that we had during our stay was that our Alexa device would not work with the Accor wi fi. We like to have our music playing and, without Alexa, the room was deadly silent. Dimitri finally figured out how to make Alexa work but it was not easy and it took re-doing.
The next huge problem was the automatic light in the toilet room. Each time we used the toilet during the night, the light went on until it automatically went off. We decided it would be better to have the light in the toilet room on all of the time and we would keep the door to the room closed until we needed to use it. A technician spent a very long time fixing it to stay on and he finally did. We were much happier. The bed was the type that shakes when a person moves; Audre really does not like that (Sofitel also had all kinds of “special effects” for the bed that Audre had removed too).
The fitness room was very well equipped with strength training machines and with cardio machines but it was not air conditioned. It was 30° in there with no breeze from the open windows. Audre requested fans and two were brought. We used the room and Nicolas (who spoke some Greek with Dimitri) helped us with some of the new machine types.
Breakfast was good with a buffet and an “eggs made to order” section. The kitchen even made us porridge. There were fresh oysters on the buffet which was great for us.
The TV did not have any music channels and that made us unhappy when Alexa was not working. There was a public beach in front of the hotel. The hotel did not provide any service on it. The hotel had electric bikes but because the canicule was raising the outdoor temperature to dangerous levels we did not use the bikes. The wonderful path around the peninsula had no shade trees (and was a little too rough and narrow for in places anyway).
Another unpleasant thing about the hotel was that there was no air conditioning working, although we saw many vents for it. Then we found out, from other guests, that reception told them there was no air conditioning in their room. When they asked for a fan, the technician came with it, and when he was asked air conditioning, he showed them the thermostat in their room and turned on their air conditioning. (We think that the hotel had air conditioning but someone decided it would not be used even during a period in which France was experiencing the hottest temperature on record.)
We sat inside by the indoor pool because there were no vacant chaise lounges with umbrellas outside (too many people and not enough amenities). We used the indoor/outdoor whirlpool and it was pleasant even though the temperature was 34°, probably because the ambient temperature was also 34°.
We had dinner at La Presqu’île on our first night was not good enough to repeat. The food was not tasty or well-prepared.
The rooms were outdated, and the terrace was dilapidated. The two accommodation areas were far apart—having to walk over 500 meters just for breakfast was extremely inconvenient for our elderly family members with mobility issues.
Due to the unusually hot weather, we had brought our elderly relatives here, expecting a comfortable stay with air conditioning. To our shock, this 5-star hotel does not have AC! The room was stiflingly hot, making it almost impossible to sleep, even though we kept the terrace door open all night.
We had originally booked two rooms for two nights, but after that miserable first night, we decided to check out early.
The tranquil location so close to the sea
The size of the room which was a bit small for a stay of one week.
