I give 2 stars for it's convenient location and the pleasant staff. The room was a different story. The morning after the first night I noticed large stains on the duvet. I thought the water in the toilet was just yellow but upon further inspection I realised it was a build up of dirt from not being cleaned properly. On the flush there was marks as if someone scribbled on it with a red crayon. There was a hole in the curtain. As we were only staying 2 nights we settled to having the room cleaned. It shouldn't have been like that in the first place.
Super convenient, really comfortable and a delicious breakfast
The Metropol Hotel is conveniently located almost across the street from the main train station. Staff are friendly and courteous. Our room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast is available at the restaurant of the attached Euler Hotel but we chose to go to a nearby coffee shop in the morning.
There are coffee shops, restaurants and parks nearby, however, the more interesting area is the old town with bridges, museums and the cathedral. We were given transit passes which enabled us to travel to the old town easily via tram 8, as it's otherwise a half-hour walk and return is partly uphill. The Metropol Hotel was perfect for our one night stay after we returned from a river cruise. We chose it for its proximity to the train station for onward travel to Zurich the next day. It took us 3 minutes to walk to the train station.
The hotel is very conveniently located, and the room was clean, recently renovated and very comfortable.
However, the breakfast was disappointing. Despite being charged separately, it was very limited, not particularly tasty, and certainly not up to the standard one would expect in Switzerland. The breakfast area itself is small and poorly serviced, with piles of dirty dishes left on the tables.
The location is excellent, just at the railwaystation and opposite the tramstops.
Personnel was very friendly and helpful.
Metropol hotel is a bit old style from 1970-80ies. I don’t like full carpeting in the room. It is unhygienic.

Slecht toegankelijk met bagage: veel trapjes. Onverschillige reactie van receptie. Geen airco dus snikhete kamer. Bed waarvan je maar één kant zonder kruipen op kon. Douche in bad.
L’emplacement idéal à 2 pas de la gare de Bâle pour un week-end de découvert .
Le personnel est très agréable . Le petit déjeuner correcte.. Terrasse sympa .
Pas de Clim. On nous a emmené un ventilateur sur demande.
Definitely not a 4 star as stated. But it's clean, very convenient, good staff and spacious rooms. On the down side, there's no AC and a bit of street noise.
