We booked the hotel, through Secret Escapes. It is in a very good location, minutes from the Royal Albert Hall, The Natural History Museum ( free, advisable to book your ticket on line) and South Kensington underground, seconds away. On arrival we were greeted by a pleasant lady on reception, who checked us in.
Our room was on the ground floor, as I noted on the hotel website, the lift is not working. My husband has recently had a knee replacement surgery.
The room was spotlessly clean, with air conditioning , tea, coffee, biscuits and bottled water. Shower gel, shampoo, handwash and body moisturiser are also supplied.
In the Exhibitionist Hotel, ( Sister Hotel) across the road, Breakfast was served up until 10.30 a.m. with cooked breakfast and full continental, including smoked salmon, cheeses, hams and various pastries and breads. I also note that the items were being freshly replenished around 10.00 a.m. which is always a good sign.
Tea & coffee ☕️ were served to the table, and all the staff, were very pleasant and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble.
They were very attentive. Well done to them all 😊
Cocktails are served in the Exhibitionist Hotel, ( sister hotel across the road) between 5.30 p.m and 9.00 p.m. 2 for 1, and I enjoyed a few pina colada, and tasted delicious and definitely full of spirit. Not watered down, like most of the cocktail offers, you see about.
They also serve pizza and light snacks.
I’ve read some reviews, I think it’s fair to say, this hotel, has recently been refurbished and is fairly priced for the area, of South Kensington.
You only need to look at the cars or estate agents, to see, how expensive the area is. Location is in a very safe area, and we felt safe, walking back from the RAH, and restaurants at night.
We look forward to returning later in the year.
Well done to all the staff, in an ever demanding industry. 🤩
Good location but that the best bit.
Was given a room on the 4th floor. Lift is out of service (and they’ll tell you that the website states this.
However, when I enquired about the details, they stated it’s been broken for months. No sign of getting it repaired. Beware. No porter services either, they have to come from another hotel.
8 flights of stairs with a heavy suitcase isn’t fun after a long day.
Together with a broken phone and countless customer service failures, I’d only recommend if you’re seeking pack backer adventures and have a good sense of humour.
Excellent location. Lovely room. Very good breakfast opposite. Friendly staff.
But no lift because its out of order and there are a lotbof stairs!
Very good price and would goagain.
Room was very rundown and was next to the public toilet area which was awful with 1 cubicle and 2 urinals . Felt very claustrophobic as the tiny window opened to what looked like a large pole. Very noisy with people passing the door to use the bathroom. I Asked to move and was offered a slightly bigger room in the basement also with no window. I was offered a complimentary breakfast when I went to reception. The reception area was nice and the staff friendly. The location was the best part of it . Check where your room is before you arrive as also the lifts have been out of order for a long time .
Room and bed very tiny. My room was next to the downstairs toilet!
The shower does not fit even a tiny person, it is a shower designed for a barge boat.
Generally pretty poor apart from the location.
Spent a night here after picking it up cheap on Secret Escapes. Hotel clean and tidy. Close to South Kensington tube. Bathroom good.
First time at this hotel. Arrived early and were allowed to leave our luggage so we could go out and about. Smooth book in and our room was very comfortable. Breakfast was across at the sister hotel across the road, plentiful, warm food as well as Continental. Staff at both locations were very warm and friendly. Stayed for 2 nights. On the morning of our departure again left our luggage so we could visit the National History Museum at the end of the road. Ideal location for the tube to explore further and plenty of places to eat nearby. A good stay.
I am still reminiscing about my wonderful stay at The Gainsborough! I spent a week here exactly a month ago, and it was truly one of my most memorable experiences in London.
From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the hotel's generosity—they surprised me with a complimentary upgrade to a stunning Double Luxury Suite. The room was exquisite: a perfect blend of sophisticated decor, impeccable cleanliness, and that authentic, charming London atmosphere that makes South Kensington so special.
The location is unbeatable. Having world-class museums and cozy cafes just a few steps away while enjoying such peace and privacy inside the hotel is a rare find. A special mention must go to the staff; their professionalism and genuine warmth made me feel like a truly valued guest.
The Gainsborough has won my heart. If you are looking for a place where style, comfort, and sincere hospitality meet, this is it. I cannot wait to return! ✨🇬🇧
Great location, good value hotel. Across the road from natural history museum. 10 min walk to Harrods. Nice area to stay in , quite at night. Rooms comfortable and clean. Breakfast is across the road on sister hotel. Plenty to eat and nice coffee. Staff all lovely in both hotels.
Nice hotel very close to natural history museum
Our second stay here. Great location. Room was clean, warm and well stocked (water, tea , biscuits). Check in staff always have a smile. We had cocktails on Saturday evening at the Exhibitionist hotel across the road. A great Margarita. But the highlight again for us was breakfast at the Exhibitionist but included in our room mate. First class spread and service. Hope to make a third visit soon👍
Visited this hotel for a Premier League match with a group of friends. We stayed in the Gainsborough for a night and the location couldn’t have been better only 2 minutes from South Kensington tube station, aswell as that the National history museum just on its doorstep. Staff were so attentive and friendly in every way. We went for lunch in its sister hotel just across the road (The Exhibitionist) the food and cocktails were amazing. I couldn’t recommend this hotel more if your going to London for a trip.
