Grand Central Hotel Shanghai - Nanjing Road

Good location with Nanjing Road pedestrian walkway just around the corner.

Our stay at this hotel was ruined by completely unprofessional and inhumane treatment from the staff.

Upon check‑in, we were asked to leave a $100 deposit. During our stay, my wife started her period – a normal female physiological process. She accidentally stained one towel slightly. At checkout, a hotel employee inspected the room, pointed to that towel, and claimed we had to pay for “special cleaning”. They demanded over 200 yuan (around $28) – an absurd amount for a regular towel.

When we reasonably objected that this is not damage but simply part of normal hotel laundry, the staff refused to return our deposit. The manager backed them up. My wife was brought to tears – this is a very personal and sensitive matter for any woman. Instead of understanding or an apology, we faced pressure, an argument, and the threat of losing our entire deposit.

We only got our money back after a long confrontation. By then we were stressed, running out of time, and almost missed our flight.

This is not service – it’s outright rudeness and an attempt to profit from an awkward situation. I strongly do not recommend this hotel, especially to couples, women, or anyone who values their dignity and time.

Perfect location

Absolutely fabulous hotel! Right in the middle of nanjing rd shopping and short walk to the bund. Staff were attentive and happy. The room was presented beautifully and daily cleaning on point. Jasmine Sun on reception made our stay special with her outstanding service and smile. Thanks to all the staff at grand central hotel Shanghai - highly recommend and look forward to returning again

Grand Central Hotel Shanghai – Absolutely Fabulous
Our stay at the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai was absolutely fabulous. We had booked what was considered a "small" room, and at check-in the receptionist kindly offered us an upgrade to a larger room. Since we were only staying for one night, I declined. To our surprise, when we entered our room, it felt more like a suite than a standard room.
The hotel has a wonderful old-style luxury feel. The room featured a writing desk, an extremely comfortable bed, a walk-in wardrobe, and everything we could possibly need. There was also a lovely armchair, and the air conditioning was quiet and worked perfectly.
The concierge team was outstanding. Jacky, Andy, and another gentleman whose name I unfortunately can't remember were incredibly helpful throughout our stay. Their service really made a difference.
The location is excellent as well, with many of Shanghai's attractions within walking distance.
I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.
