We had a lovely stay at this very efficiently run hotel. The welcome was warm wherever you went and there was always someone available to help you.
The gardens were large and wooded with a semi wild feel. Standouts were eating breakfast overlooking the gardens and lunch on the shady terrace alongside the woodland. Breakfast was excellent and we enjoyed our meals in the bar in the evening.
We had a spa room which had large doors opening on to a terrace overlooking the gardens and wooded hillside. A phone call to Reception brought us tea bags and fresh milk to keep in the fridge for early morning tea. Its a short walk to the river.
The hotel was very pretty inside but the outside was a bit run down, especially the gardens. We had the Spa room which was very spacious and had a big terrace with view to the garden. The most annoying thing in the room was the position of the sockets next to the bed, they were under the bedside tables, I had to kneel down to plug in and unplug the chargers. The second thing was the old styled hangers that hooked on the little metal hooks which really annoyed my husband. I suppose people still steal wood hangers! They were a bit mean with the supply of coffee/tea & milk, the tea/coffee packets were very basic brands!
The sauna & steam rooms were very basic and the showers didn't work well, one of them was broken. I don't think they should call themselves ¨One of The most luxurious hotels¨!¨We had a drink in the bar and the house wine was off. The waiter didn't know how long it had been opened.
Overall it was a pleasant stay, it was nice to see the grounds and gardens which really needed some more loving care. Perhaps it would be different in May/June. The location is a bit out of the city centre but it's not a problem as Uber is very cheap and easy.
I decided I needed to redo the review. Although my room was probably only 2-2.5 stars, the common areas od the hotel are 5 stars, as is the staff, who could not be more considerate. All in, therefore, I feel four stars is probably more fair than three. I recommend you take advantage of the common areas and grounds

So, the hotel property and common rooms are amazing. The hotel is well situated and central with beautiful sitting rooms and the staff could not be nicer.
But my actual room (a spa room) is at odds with the charm of the hotel. It sits in a different building that I think may be a reconverted dorm or office. It does overlook a park (and parking lot) and during the day, the view does a lot to improve the room. But the room itself is somewhat airless and disappointing- like sleeping in a decorated warehouse. I do think they are trying the best they can with that space. The issue is that they are using that space at all for hotel rooms, given that these rooms were likely never intended to be used for sleeping and that they sit in a modern building completely at odds with the hotel advertised.
It’s hard to know if this is a 2 or 4/5 but I think combing all favors, it’s 3.
There is a sparsely populated gym that faces a concrete wall. There is also a pool. The pool is heated and requires swim class Breakfast is included.
Beautiful historic property in the wonderful city of Coimbra! Our spacious rooms in the historic building had lovely private gardens. Breakfast buffet was plentiful. The reception staff are especially accommodating and helpful. Don’t miss seeing the gardens at the back of the property.
From the moment I first entered the hotel until the time I left, I consistently received the kindest and most outstanding service.
In particular, after checking out, I encountered a serious problem with my rental car and, as a foreign visitor, found myself in a very difficult situation. The hotel staff handled the matter with exceptional kindness and in the best possible way. I would especially like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff member who called Europcar on the morning of February 11 to resolve the issue, as well as to the staff member who assisted with my luggage and escorted me in the heavy rain.
If anyone I know plans to visit Coimbra, I will certainly recommend staying at Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas. I would also very much like to return in the future.
Really amazing place to visit. Definitely the best place to stay in Coimbra. This includes staff, buildings, gardens, restaurants and spa.
Very lovely hotel, excellent breakfast and really refined service. Steps to get into the hotel… but they help with the luggage.
We stayed here for two nights on our driving tour of Portugal. This is a lovely hotel on the outskirts of Coimbra - a gentle flat 20 min walk to the lower town where the restaurants and night life are. Amazing grand public rooms that seem to be largely unused. Nice pool and extensive gardens. Our room, in the modern extension was a bit small for a hotel of this class, but unexpectedly had a garden area. Excellent breakfast. On our first night we were a bit tired, so ate in the lesser of the eating options and were rather disappointed.
Staff is great! Property is beautiful. Be mindful to ask for a room away from a main hallway to avoid a little noise. For us, even so, it was very nice.
Note: if you want to swim indoors bring a bathing cap. Outdoors not needed but indoors we were limited by this!
Breakfast excellent, room clean, safe environment.
Our first impression upon opening the bedroom door of Room 34- disappointed. Our “garden view” was ugly. And the gym- poor quality equipment and a view of a white wall- not what I’d expect from a 5 star luxury hotel. Despite pleasant staff, a good breakfast and lovely outdoor pool area- gardens were not special, so I would not recommend for the price.
Incredible Farm to Table establishment operated by a 3rd generation family member in the heart of the Duro Valley wine country
The pool is beautiful but cold this time of year.
5 star
It was a lovely spot
This property is the old Palace and it is amazing . The gardens are beautiful with the backdrop of the love affair of Pedro and Ines. 5 stars! I would stay there again and highly recommend this hotel .
What features of a good hotel does the common sense suggest you? Good bedding? All amenities in a perfect shape? Cleanliness? Does the title of a member of the small luxury hotels of the world whip up your expectations?
Room 15 in Quinta da lágrima unfortunately doesn’t fit any of the features mentioned above. Wrinkled, worn-out mattress, the noisiest air conditioner ( the sound of a ready to take off plane), broken everything in the bathroom, dirty plums,… I am shocked.
How can this hotel be put in the same level with Nobu in Marbella or Vinha boutique hotel if to talk about Portuguese hotels?????
Shame
I’ve got a lot of more photos to share, if needed.
Amazing hotel! Staff is wonderful. Great experience!!
This former palace, turned luxury hotel, is divine. Connected to the famous "Pedro and Ines" tragic love story, the entire place oozes history and charm. We stayed in a lovely "garden" room, with an entry directly onto the extensive gardens (we spent a few hours touring the various parts of the garden - it is a local attraction even for those who are not staying at the hotel). Our room was a delightful mashup of old and new, with the historic "bones" of the structure intact, but fitted out with the modern amenities - great A/C, an extremely comfortable bed and high quality linens, great water pressure in the shower, delicious toiletries, and some fun (modern) ceiling art. Cleanliness was excellent and towels were refreshed whenever needed. The outdoor pool, where I perched numerous times in the hot weather, is wonderful, and of a size where swimming laps, for those so inclined (like my husband), is possible. The location is across the river from the university, but walkable (as long as you are able to navigate hills) and given the remove from "downtown," it is delightfully quiet at night.
The breakfast was varied and delicious, with a fresh omelet station, lots of delicious fruit, yogurts, breads and pastries, juices, etc. Outdoor seating is a must. We grew particularly fond of one of our breakfast helpers, Danilo - thanks for your cheerful and friendly assistance!
We ate one night at the gourmet restaurant, which was absolutely delicious, but be forewarned - the portions are large!! Service was fantastic.
Front desk assistance was professional and helpful - thanks to the entire team!
For the quality (and unique nature) of the lodgings, the food, the setting, the staff, etc., the price point was beyond reasonable. We would love to return to this lovely, underrated city, and when we do, we will be sure to stay at Quinta das Lagrimas once again.
Beautiful historic palace hotel set in lush gardens, with a pool, spa, restaurants, and walking trails tied to the Pedro & Inês tragic love story. Excellent English-speaking staff and outstanding service throughout.
We stayed in a garden room with direct outdoor access, which opened directly onto a private outdoor area furnished with table and chairs as well as having easy paths to the spa and pool. Breakfast buffet was excellent, with an omelet station.
Rooms have several outlets, but most are low and behind furniture so bring long charging cables. No USB ports noted. Bathtub can be slippery when used for showers.
Stay at least 3 nights; this is more than a hotel, it’s a destination.
