A Five-Star Stay Filled with Music, Friendship, and Exceptional Hospitality
Our stay at the Westin Excelsior Rome on May 31 and June 1 was exceptional from beginning to end. We had the privilege of staying in one of the hotel’s Imperial Suites, and it was absolutely amazing. Beautifully appointed, spacious, and elegant, it made our visit to Rome even more memorable. Every aspect of our stay reflected true five-star hospitality.
One of the highlights was spending our evenings in the hotel’s bar. The atmosphere was sophisticated and inviting, and the cocktails were expertly crafted by the talented mixologists Daniele, Luca, and Fulvio. Their professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail made every visit a pleasure.
The live music was another unforgettable part of our stay. On our first evening, Andrea entertained guests with wonderful piano and vocals, and on the second evening, Mauro created a fantastic atmosphere with guitar and singing. As a harmonica player myself, I was honored to be invited to join Andrea on the first night and Mauro on the second. It was an unexpected and joyful experience that made us feel incredibly welcome, and it seemed everyone—staff and guests alike—had as much fun as I did!
We also enjoyed a delicious dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, the “Doney Café & Restaurant”. The cuisine, service, and ambiance were outstanding and added yet another memorable experience to our stay.
Whenever we needed assistance, Alessandro and Riccardo were there with genuine kindness and efficiency. They took care of every request beautifully and made us feel like valued guests throughout our stay.
Thank you to everyone at the Westin Excelsior Rome for making our visit so memorable. We left with wonderful memories, new friends, and every reason to return. Five stars without hesitation!
Sorry, but I think I gave the above review just now to the wrong hotel. Please delete my earlier review. This is the one I wanted to send re the Excelsior.
A tired old queen who’s slipped a couple of stars. It needs a total upgrade.
Very mixed bag. Excellent location and fantastic breakfast, but lousy check in experience and the hotel feels like it’s falling apart. The bartender was great and made fantastic cocktails, but when we called for ice twice to have it sent to our room it just never arrived. The bed was comfortable and the AC kept the room cool while it was 99 degrees outside; but the shower ran hot and cold at the same time (going from nearly scalding hot to ice cold) so it wasn’t a pleasant experience.
On top of that, when we ordered a taxi to the airport, they sent an entire van which could have easily fit several more people, but the driver left with only us, making for a VERY tense ride. They were clearly furious and drove like a maniac the entire time, and although we got to the airport in about 45 mins, the driver charged us 65 euro instead of the standard 55 since we paid by card. We had actually planned on leaving a generous tip since we knew the driver was screwed over by whomever dispatched the ride, but the driver just charged us the extra 10 euro and we didn’t say anything. Ordinarily, we’d dispute the charge out of principle, but we honestly felt terrible for the driver, despite the shadiness of it all. Needless to say, quite off putting.
So again, a weird mixed bag.
Ubicación y la arquitectura del edificio un clásico de Roma
Poca amabilidad del personal en especial de la gente de los maleteros
Lovely grand hotel, situated on the Via Veneto - easy walking distance to most of the highlights of Rome - however, on a boiling hot day unable to get taxi or uber, the walk back up to hotel is challenging!
We had a lovely two days, the room was large, somewhat dated but comfortable. The bathroom was huge, again, dated and jaded but clean. The staff attentiveness and awareness was extremely hit and miss - sometimes we were seen, other times not!
The restaurant staff were generally wonderful - breakfast on the terrace a real treat as were afternoon/evening drinks.
We had one evening meal sitting outside on the terrace and it was wonderful - food, drinks, ambience and service. In particular I would like to mention both ZEINAB and AMIR who provided excellent service together with genuine friendliness - thank you!
We stayed for five days in three rooms and were treated with exceptionally accommodating and friendly staff. We could not have been treated any better. Highly recommend!
US Embassy is a block away and Spanish Steps an 8-minute Walk. Superb restaurants abound within 3 blocks of this property. Be sure to try their breakfast and sip a Campari outside the property in their shaded sidewalk area during a leisurely afternoon. Turn to the Front Desk Manager in advance of your travel. He is very helpful with special requests.
The hotel is in the heart of everything,in its days must have been a grand hotel. The foyer is not user friendly as it has steps to get to a lift.Staff is a hit and miss and the rooms are quite dated and the facilities are not to a standard of 5 star.TVs are not far from the old tube style. If you are planning to spend time in your room this is definitely not the place for you but the biggest winner is centrally located.
The stay was amazing. The hotel is beautiful and in the perfect location to walk to Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and so many other points of interest. The room was great, huge and beautiful as well. We had a suite and did not want to leave. Every member of the staff was also so friendly and willing to help with whatever we needed. Excellent morning buffet with attentive service and a great mix of healthy and sweet options, including lox, a juicer, homemade waffles, meats, cheeses, made to order omelettes, yogurts, pastries and so much more. The area is safe and the taxi stand just outside made exploring very convenient. I was hesitant at first based on some reviews that the hotel could use some updates, and I usually prefer more modern accommodations, but I could not have been happier with this choice and will stay again without hesitation the next time we are in Rome. It’s really all part of the charm! We could not have asked for a better stay for our first time in Rome!
The location was very nice.
Every time i left the room, my key card won’t work on my return. It became very frustrating. There was no shower gel and i had to go to reception twice to get a replacement. i left my shoes out to be shined according to the in room directions, yet they were untouched in the morning. The hotel is definitely in need of a serious touch up. Walls need cleaning and painting.
We had a very nice standard large room overlooking a quiet side street. We had good service. Beautiful and spacious marble bathroom. It’s a historic hotel so of course it may look “dated” to some. Excellent location near Villa Borghese with walking distance to Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Be prepared for mob scenes at major tourist attractions.
This hotel is NOT it. DO NOT GO HERE. There is only ONE IRON AND ONE IRONING BOARD. The whole building is dated, and everything is worn and old. The TV alone is from the 2010s. The gym lockers are destroyed inside. Why am I paying all this money for a sub-par experience? DO NOT STAY HERE. As a 20+ year, 1,000,000+ point Marriott member, to another member: go to another Marriott. You have been warned. This one is a shame to the brand.
Beautiful hotel, very comfortable hotel room. Great bed!!! What a delight to be treated well at the end of a two week trip to Italy. The hotel is very convenient to shopping, restaurants and the park.
My family and I have been returning to this hotel since the 90s. While the hotel herself has been through many changes since then, the one thing that has remained constant is the warmth of the staff. The roman experience and the hotel herself would never felt complete without them.
Warm thanks to Marco from Ischia for his sincere and kind help, Signor Roberto the night concierge, and a lobby staff from Artena that I couldn't not remember his name but was kind enough to help me when I needed assistance during my last day of stay there.
Last but never least, the talented Luca di Francia. The true artist behind the bar who was always a good friend, making me feel like I had truly come home every time I visited Rome (not to mention the beautifully crafted drinks he curated for us).
Location and heritage. Good breakfast.
Super fanè and old. And not particularly clean. In our room we had a TV that had more than 20 years and all the cables were unplugged.
We have stayed at the Westin Excelsior 15 times ,on every visit to Rome, and it is always an absolutely wonderful experience in everyway. The Westin is in a great location, with old world elegance and charm. The service is exceptional starting from the greeting of the doormen to welcoming reception staff, and continues through housekeeping, dining room, the cocktail lounge, and all the many amenities offered.
The rooms are immaculate, spacious, & well appointed. Sleeping is easy with quiet rooms, beautiful linens & comfortable beds. Their breakfast buffet is abundant and beautifully presented in a comforatble dining room or lovely outdoor area. The staff is outstanding for being highly professional and also very welcoming . They acknowledge and appreciate Marriott members for their loyality. We look forward to our stay at the Westin for the hotel itself, equal to our visit to beautiful Rome.

We were at the Westin Excelsior for 2 days in April. We were not at all impressed. The Westin Excelsior is old, dated and worn out. It has seen better days. The huge hotel has grand elements and one can envision its past glory days but they are long past. Now, you find faded and outdated furniture, stained carpets, dirty bathrooms, cracking paint and masonry. chipped wood and a quickly deteriorating appearance. Not only has the physical property of the hotel deteriorated but the staff are also old, decrepit and worn out. There are angry middle age men at the front desk and the concierge who have an jaded attitudes and with their hands out, always looking for a tip. Not once did they open the door for my wife or any other guests as they entered the building but stood around chatting with each others. If this hotel did not have its location on Via Veneto, it would be a 2-3 star hotel at best and NOT a 5 star. I would not stay there again and would not recommend to anyone else.
