Unfortunately, I can only recommend this hotel to a limited extent. There are a few things that don't quite add up here.
First, the positives:
The building looks nice, and the breakfast room and bar are good. I can't comment on the spa. At first glance, the rooms look very good, and the box-spring bed is truly first-class. The duvets and pillows are also good.
Mediocre:
The safe is locked, so you can't just lock something away; you have to get a key first. Some of the towels are really old. Breakfast is okay, but nothing more. Everything you need for a quick breakfast is there. But there's no variety. It's always the same.
No go:
The heating in the room is a joke. It's a small electric radiator that switches off automatically after 15 minutes. The room is therefore cold in the evening and there is no heating in the bathroom. It's always cold there.
My experience:
I was given a room that was cold. A lot of dust swirled up from the top of the wardrobe when I put my suitcase on it. There was almost no hot water when I turned on the tap at the sink. The toilet flushed, but without any power. Nothing went away?! The shower in the bathtub had hardly any water pressure for showering. The drain was broken and the cover was held in place with a screw. There were mould stains around the bathtub. I had a towel that was fresh, but it had dried-on secretions on it that were clearly unidentifiable.
The management was very nice and understanding and gave me a new room the next day. I had to pack everything up again and move over. The room there was much better, but also cold. I got a second radiator, which I also placed by the bathroom door so that it wouldn't be freezing cold in there. Flushing the toilet was also difficult in this room, but at least everything went down. The shower is a joke. Water-saving shower heads make perfect sense, but you should at least get some water when you shower. The shower is open at the front, as there is no curtain. Flooding is inevitable.
Conclusion:
The hotel lobby is currently being renovated or remodelled. So I think something is being done. I stay in many hotels and have never written such a long review. But so many things are going wrong here that I feel compelled to do so. Incidentally, the staff at reception are extremely friendly. Of course, it's not their fault, but rather the hotel's structures. Investment is simply needed here!
The hotel has very good staff, average breakfast, big bedrooms badly lit, big bathroom but the shower fixed head points straight through to flood the floor so only use hand held bit. It’s welcoming but this area of town has some dubious characters wandering at dark
It is fairly easy to get to in what we used to call the Canal Basin, easy walk to town and the court. Plenty of parking. I had booked a deluxe suite and was looking forward to a couple of relaxing evenings. This suite was actually only a room with a separate shower room, much like any other hotel room, and a chair so I went to reception to check I was in the right place. Apparently, I was. A deluxe suite is not actually a suite, doh. If you want an actual suite then you have to ask for a junior suite. Presumably, given the looks on the staff faces I should have known this. What you get is an allegedly slightly larger room. I could not say what size the smaller ones are, it certainly wasn't vast. The website also says 'bath or shower' and allows you to add requests to I asked for a bath which I didn't get and on checking it seems there are no deluxe suites with baths, again you need a junior suite. So not the best start. There was also no overhead lighting in the main part of the room, some nightlights by the bed and a small desk lamp. So, first impressions not the best. I should say that the bed was super comfy and I slept really well. I don't like showers much, but this was OK. The gym was quite impressive, and I went there and for a swim and a sauna. Breakfast is a buffet affair, and I have had better but also much worse. They do have quite a crappy single shot coffee machine which took ages and also a standard toaster rather than one of those conveyor belt things which everybody likes. Overall not bad, I think without the obvious misdescription it might have been a 4. Will know better next time.
I have stayed here on a weekly basis for over 4 years.
The rooms are extremely comfortable. Though a bit dark in the winter. Extra lighting would be beneficial.
The reception staff have always gone out of their way to help with anything,
Especially Trina, Vikrant and Simona.
The only negative is the new eatery.
I do not have breakfast so I cannot comment on that. I have eaten a couple of times there but the tvs on the walls showing music channels are so loud.
The menu is mediocre and appears to be an after thought.
But I must say the food i did choose was well cooked.
Fab service and recently refurbished rooms. Very clean pool area too. Bathrooms are fab! Very comfy beds with excellent quality bedding. Rooms smell great.
On arrival plenty of parking, nice location by the canal. If booking direct parking is included, we booked online via booking.com and was asked to pay parking £10 for 24 hours. I mentioned we’d parked in a disabled space and the receptionist said it was complimentary parking for blue badge holders. Lovely idea!
The room was spacious, tidy, good supply of sundries; tea/coffee etc. The shower was lush and had the shampoo/body wash supplied. Nice bed with the most comfortable pillows I’ve ever laid my head on 😍 Huge TV with Freeview, WiFi worked well too.
The only downside was the room wasn’t very well lit, we struggled to read anything without using phone torch 😟 also wasn’t very warm despite putting the heating on, was ok for me but hubby wasn’t impressed!
Lovely breakfast next morning, everything you could wish for and more! It was all nicely freshly cooked. The staff were so nice too, very friendly and helpful!
Would definitely stay again. Saw a few dogs too which I thought was nice that they allow pets !
We didn’t use the complimentary spa facilities but it looked lovely!
The Sandman Signature is perfectly located in Victoria Quays, Sheffield, just a few minutes walk from the city centre. The room was perfect. Nicely modern, with mood lighting, a comfy super king size bed. A well equipped bathroom, with face cloths provided, which was a nice touch. The view of the quay, with the narrow boats moored up gave the hotel a nice, relaxed vibe. I didn’t use the bar or leisure club on this occasion, unfortunately, but both looked very inviting.
Whilst the food at breakfast was of very good quality (nice thick cut bacon), the availability of hot drinks was an absolute shambles. Having read about these problems some weeks ago nothing has been done to rectify the situation. A 6 deep queue at the 1 working machine, delivering coffee at the drip drip speed of a coffee percolator, was farcical. The queue was so slow moving…..I gave up. A breakfast without tea is unforgivable . I should have made a cup of tea in my room, and taken it down with me.
I am not in the habit of writing reviews for this kind of thing but feel driven to do so by our very recent experience of this hotel.
In the interests of consistency, I will start with the positives, as I always do with this kind of thing.
The bathrooms are impressive with plenty of room and the beds are very comfortable, as well as roomy.
I'm afraid, however, that the negatives hugely outweigh the positives, to an extent that we would never book again with this hotel group.
The heating system is poor, offering radiators which although modern offer only low, medium or high heat. The lighting in the rooms is very limited, making for a dismal experience. Even with all the lights on it always felt as though we were literally in the dark.
On our first evening we ate at the hotel because of the weather outside. We were hugely disappointed, however, with the menu, which was very limited in terms of the type of food on offer. In the end we opted for so-called WOW chicken tenders, followed by rump steak. The chicken tenders were strips of fried chicken and the batter was so bad I had to pull it off so I could just eat the chicken inside. The batter was fairly hard and really, really salty, almost unbearable. Steak was no better; tough and lacking in taste and indeed the main meal in general was so greasy that both of us left the majority of the food on the plate. This is absolutely not our usual habit; we do not like food waste but what was on our plates was inedible.
Breakfast was terrible. The food was all right, nothing to write home about, but the whole process for getting food and drinks is chaotic and unpleasant. The omelette I ordered on the third morning had not arrived after nearly twenty minutes, when I did get it (after reminding staff) it was uncooked in the middle. Even worse, though, was the drinks arrangements - they have two Nespresso machines which are constantly jamming and worse than that for tea drinkers is that the hot water they provide comes out in a tiny trickle and is only 'hot' - not satisfactory for tea drinkers. Moreover, the supply of breakfast essentials, such as tea bags, teaspoons, water for the machine, etc, was not consistent. Every single morning I had to ask that stocks be replenished - all the above and on top of that glasses for juices etc.
None of this is the fault of the staff, who are fantastic, but it is the fault of a hotel chain that understaffs its services, presumably to save on costs.
The worst aspect of our stay though was the noisiness of the whole place. On the second morning of our stay we decided to go downstairs for a drink while we waited to catch a tram for our day out. This was just before midday. There isn't a lounge area as such, but we tried to make ourselves comfortable. Almost impossible, however, when big video screens are banging out loud music. I asked for it to be turned down, given that there we were virtually the only guests around, and they said they would. But no, they kept on banging it out, which made me draw the conclusion that it was for the benefit of the staff rather than guests.
Things got worse later on, when we returned to the hotel at about 9pm. We ordered a drink and tried to make ourselves comfortable but found that we had to put up with a combination of the very loud video music AND a private party, where the music was belting out at an unbelievable volume. After a while we returned to our room, believing that we would be able to enjoy some peace and quiet, only to find that the party music was still pounding in our ears. It carried on until midnight.
In effect, there is no sound proofing at this hotel and this makes for a noisy, unpleasant experience.
Overall, this hotel is uncomfortable and noisy with a food and drinks service that leaves a lot to be desired.
I’ve stayed here before but not under this chain, so know the rooms are generous.
Sadly I was near the lift and my days they’re noisy - and so is the ping when it arrives!! The window wasn’t quite snug either so not a hugely restful evening - but the room is great!
Breakfast for me as a vegetarian was ok, seemed a little chaotic as it was a busy Sunday morning.
Would stay again!
The room was great but the breakfast inedible. Uncooked or empty trays the staff could not cope. Complained and after chasing was offered a refund which has never materialised. My calls and emails are ignored .
Good clean hotel, friendly staff. We stop in junior suite which was roomy, clean, with a big comfy bed.
Only downside was check in. We arrived at 1.30pm and fully understand this was before check in time at 3pm. Got told to come back in 30mins and room should be ready. We returned a hour later to again come back in 30mins and it be ready. We returned at 3.15pm to a huge check in queue. At 3.30pm we went to check in and again got told the room wasn't ready. However 5mins later it was. Unfortunately spoilt our experience with our stay. For the money we paid for the bigger room, we would of expected it to ready for 3pm
Lovely hotel with helpful staff. Had booked three twin rooms but when we arrived one was a double. Sorted out very quickly by the staff who were very helpful.
Staff were lovely
Location was great for what we wanted
Breakfast was lush
Great night sleeps
Only downside was over half an hour to check in
Had a lovely one night stay with my daughter which she'd bought as a belated birthday treat for me! The twin room had two queen size beds and was really comfortable. The shower was lovely with nice toiletries. We were able to check in early too which meant we could get out and about straightaway. That said, they were also happy to store our bag on the second day so we didn't have to carry them around town.
The 20 metre pool is lovely for swimming and was very quiet even late on Saturday afternoon, but if you prefer lounging, there are only 4 chairs! There is also a good gym, sauna and steam room.
We didn't use the bar or restaurant in the evening as we had a reservation in town, but it had a lovely atmosphere, some special offer drinks and a decent menu.
The breakfast area / restaurant is beautifully laid out with a view of the canal boats but was a little hectic with only one very slow coffee machine so a queue developed quickly. It then overheated so like the other one, was out of action for a while! There is a good selection of hot and cold food on the buffet but as is common on buffets, not all of the hot food was hot and the beans were actually cold!
The hotel is about a 10-15 minute walk from the railway station and town. We managed to visit the Winter Garden and side galleries, the Botanic Garden, the Kelham Island Museum and the Cathedral. We also found nice places to eat and drink. I hadn't been to Sheffield for 40 years so there was plenty to do and see.
Would definitely return to Sheffield and would be happy to use this hotel again - though maybe not on a Saturday when it's at its most expensive!!!
It is chaotic - apparently they are changing owners and haven't got it sorted. They had the wrong information about my husband, listing an address we haven't lived at for more than 2 years and which was not the address used for the booking. The room itself is lovely and fresh and clean - not a great view but we wouldn't expect that. Hence 3 stars.
But when we went for breakfast... the coffee machine was malfunctioning (I got a mug off hot frothy water and milk, no coffee, husband had to wait while it cooled then it ran out of milk and water - and the weren't keeping up with supplying mugs) . The very nice bread was not sliced all the way through and there was no bread knife so you had to tear chunks off with our hands, which is not exactly hygienic. The fried eggs were labelled fried eggs (like they could have been something else) but the fruit juice was unidentified. The breakfast area is very pleasant and comfortable, but what idiot thought it was a good idea to mount two screens on top of each other, both showing the same video with barely-audible sound and frenetic cutting so it was constantly flashing? The same idiot that thought appropriate videos would be a mix of clothed males in sneakers and scantily clad women in heels writhing around each other interspersed with glossy women writhing on beds and diving in pools - presumably a Robin Thicke fan. Not sure it's ideal for a breakfast audience, but the Amy Winehouse video with stills was far less intrusive. And then the idiot surpassed him/herself - a violent video with a man and woman fighting violently with lots of "f you!" "f you!" which was very audible. Ending with a car crash and presumably the woman dead. Sunday morning breakfast? Seriously? I complained to the manager and he asked if I has complained to the breakfast staff, who were separate. No, you're the manager. You need to deal with it. He hummed a bit then got them to switch off the 2 screens completely. They really need a serious think about what they show - it was the same motley selection in the bar the night before but you more expect it then.
As an aside: While I was waiting for my husband, there was a woman sitting in the bar area drinking a coke and looking at her phone. The bar was closed, the area wasn't being used, but the breakfast staff threw her out. She asked why, and they just said she couldn't sit there. She shrugged to me and left.
Loads right but an awful lot wrong.
This is a great hotel, great location and very friendly staff.
Everything was really clean and the room was great.(we booked a superior room with balcony and views over the quay)
Great gym and pool/sauna/steam room.
The selection of drinks on offer was great too... all in all highly recommended, only one criticism was the buffet breakfast... everything was just only warm and I asked to microwaved which was fine.
The quality of the sausages need looking at.
The hot water for tea was far too long wait.
I would suggest they do away with the buffet and offer breakfast freshly cooked like other Hotels.
Superior room was fantastic.
The bedroom was really clean and modern. I was disappointed to have to pay £8 for parking and we met some disgruntled people at the shared spa but overall, it was good value for money.
Perfect. No issues. Comfortable night sleep.
Immaculate room, freshly renovated. Handy for the city and tram stops.
