Great view, bad hotel
Pros:

Classic, rustic hotel with a phenomenal view. Horribly managed. Nobody here cares about customer service (except one lovely waitress). Sat in the bar for an hour — bartender never came to ask us what we wanted to drink — even though there was nobody else there!

We paid over $250 US per night! The rate they advertise - about $ 190/night - is only good if you call the hotel to reserve. If you book online - even through their website! - you $50+/night extra. The room was worth maybe $60/night. They know they got you because it’s the only hotel on the rim of the canyon and the only one within walking distance of the train station. And as I said - nobody here cares.

Rooms haven’t been remodeled since it was built in the 70s. TV didn’t work. No hair dryer. No internet in the rooms, despite what they advertise.

If you want to pay with a card, whether at the bar or in the restaurant or in the store, you have to go into the office; they only have one card terminal in the entire hotel and it’s not portable. And NOBODY has change so we couldnt pay in cash and couldnt even tip the housekeeper.

Included breakfast offers big portions but mediocre quality and almost no options. “Orange juice” is powdered. There’s a little coffee bar but it doesn’t open til 1pm even though the menu says 7am.

If you love dogs, bring dog treats. Street dogs are friendly and scrawny.

Pros:

Pros:

If not for the amazing views, this property is a 2 star motel. The beds are hard as a rock and the toilets had no water. Facilities need a complete make over. There are packs of dogs that follow you to your room and actually try and take any food you may have with you. My wife was afraid to walk outside of the room alone. The staff is really friendly and responsive, but the property is bad.

Too expensive for the service provided
Pros:

The location is perfect. The hotel is located directly opposite the El Chepe train station on the edge of the canyon. From the lobby and the restaurant you have a perfectly spectacular view into and over the canyon. The room also offers the same good view (but not all rooms!), and in front of the window a small balcony, perfect for relaxing in good weather.

Cons:

The room had the furnishings of a youth hostel from the sixties. No comfort (no TV, no hairdryer, no box, primitive bathroom) and apparently no investment for decades. We had bad weather (bad luck for March) and had to rely on the untrustworthy gas heating. In view of the quality on offer, the price is an imposition, about a factor of 4 too high. This also applies to the evening meal: There is only a short slot of one hour, no choice (only one menu) and a completely inflated price. But as a guest, there's no avoiding it!
We can only advise everyone to stay overnight in Creel and visit Divisadero and the canyon by cab as Day Trip, it is online 45km!

Very Uncomfortable
Pros:

Amazing views.

Cons:

Room was very poor and needs a lot of restoration. Parts of the bathroom ceiling were lying on the shower floor. Beds were not comfortable.
Heating was by an old gas heater in the room . This is not something I was comfortable with for safety reasons. Also it kept flicking on and off and BANGING and CLANKING all night , it was impossible to sleep. I would have turned it off even though it was very cold only there was no way to do that .
Breakfast was very poor. There is nowhere else to eat near so if you do decide to come here bring your own food.
The views from the room were amazing but I couldn’t stay there another night even for this.

Pros:
