A Little Slice of Heaven in the Algarve
We’ve just come back from a stay at the Vilalara Grand Hotel in Porches, and I honestly didn’t want to leave. It’s one of those rare places that feels quietly luxurious – nothing flashy or over the top – just effortlessly elegant and beautifully done in every way.
Location
Getting there was a breeze – only about a 40-minute drive from Faro Airport, which was ideal. The hotel is tucked away on a lovely stretch of coastline, so it feels peaceful and private, but you can also walk into the local town quite easily if you fancy a change of scene or a meal out somewhere different (we found a couple of lovely local restaurants with fantastic food and even better prices).
First Impressions
The moment you arrive, you get that exclusive but understated vibe. The resort is really spacious, spread out over lots of smaller buildings rather than one big hotel block, so it never feels busy or crowded. Everything is beautifully maintained, and there’s a real sense of calm about the place – the kind of spot where you immediately start to unwind.
Facilities
The facilities are fantastic. There are tennis and padel courts, and even dedicated pickleball courts, which my husband was very excited about! The spa and gym are top-notch, and there are several pools to choose from, plus a kids’ club that looked great fun and busy whenever we passed by (ours are a bit too old now, sadly). I also loved how many little quiet corners there are around the grounds – cabanas, shaded seating areas, and hidden terraces where you can just switch off and enjoy the view.
Pools and Beach
The main saltwater pool deserves a special mention – it’s long enough for proper swims but still beautifully designed, surrounded by loungers and greenery. It felt calm and never overcrowded, even when the hotel was busy.
The beach is absolutely stunning - it’s that classic Algarve mix of golden sand and dramatic cliffs, with really comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. Such a lovely spot to spend the day, and only a short stroll from your room.
Rooms
We stayed in one of the suites, and it was gorgeous – spacious, stylish and extremely comfortable. The furnishings felt luxurious but relaxed, with lots of natural tones and textures. The bathroom setup was clever, with the toilet separate behind a glass door, and everything felt spotlessly clean. I also really appreciated that the fridge was empty, so we could store our own drinks and snacks instead of juggling overpriced mini bar items. Another nice touch – plenty of bottled water provided every day, so we never ran out.
Grounds
The gardens are breathtaking. It honestly felt like walking through the tropical house at Kew Gardens – lush, full of colour, and immaculately cared for. The planting is mature and varied, and there’s always something blooming. Walking anywhere in the resort was a pleasure in itself.
Gym and Spa
The gym has clearly been recently refurbished, and it’s brilliant. Loads of equipment for all levels and types of workout, from cardio to weights, and little touches like iced lemon and lime water make a big difference. Everything was spotless and well maintained.
The spa could honestly be a destination on its own. I had a treatment with Maria, who was absolutely superb – really knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what she does. After my treatment, I was shown to a quiet relaxation area with curtained-off recliners overlooking the gardens – such a lovely way to finish.
Food
The food throughout our stay was excellent, especially breakfast, which was a real highlight. Everything was so fresh and beautifully presented – plenty of healthy options, pastries, and local dishes to try. We ate at the hotel a few evenings too and found the quality consistently high.
Staff and Service
The staff really make this place special. Everyone we met was friendly, professional and genuinely warm. The housekeeping team were brilliant – always cheerful, and they somehow managed to keep my teenage son’s room looking civilised, which is no small feat! The service overall was spot-on – thoughtful without being over the top.
In Summary
Vilalara Grand Hotel is one of those rare places that manages to feel both luxurious and laid-back. You can do as much or as little as you like – relax by the pool, play tennis or pickleball, wander down to the beach, or just explore the gardens. Everything feels beautifully done, yet there’s no sense of fuss or formality.
We left feeling completely refreshed and already planning when we can go back.
A genuine five-star experience – calm, luxurious, and absolutely worth it.
Great location, calm atmosphere, perfect service and great dining. Rooms well equiped and clean. An impressive vacation.
Spent a week at vilalara. Lovely hotel, very helpful staff and great facilities.
Relaxed vibe, with activities and facilities spaced out. Restaurants were good and accommodated gluten free, even for pizza - which was an unexpected bonus. Tried pilates and Thalassa boat tour from hotel. All well organised. Lovely beach.
.
Excellent staff, always friendly, smiling and who couldn’t do enough to make the stay the best it could be.
Property was large so it was hard to access and see the ocean. Indoor pool/spa was only accessible to those who paid for a treatment. All classes were extra money. Resort is isolated so dining limited to hotel. Had to uber long distances to get to attractions in the area/cliffs/hikes. Wasps everywhere on property so hard to relax and enjoy pool, breakfast outside or beach. For price point wish we had selected elsewhere.
A definite 5 star resort. Everyone is so accommodating and pleasant.
The view is amazing and the beach is so nice.
We hear that in the summer time it gets so crowded. As we were fortunate now as the weather was perfect 80.
Beautiful gardens with superb meals overlooking the ocean, with breathtaking views.
It was an amazing stay to wine down after 9 days in Portugal. Everything was fantastic
We stayed here for 4 nights after our wedding in Cascais. It was absolutely perfect for what we wanted, a relaxing, luxury stay.
The beach was beautiful with plenty of sun loungers, the pool area was lovely too but we spent all day on the beach.
The food was amazing, we particularly enjoyed the breakfast.
The area around the hotel wasn’t the nicest but there were a couple of good seafood restaurants that the reception staff recommended. However, given how nice the hotel was we didn’t really leave. We loved the gym and the tennis courts which we used daily.
Thank you for a lovely stay!
What a beautiful, lush resort with spectacular grounds. . A great place to relax. Beautiful secluded beach, several nice pools, tennis and pickleball courts. Only tried one restaurant, A Costa, which was pretty good. Breakfast was included and an extravaganza. One of the largest buffets I have ever seen and the quality was great. A nice omelet station, incredibly fresh oranges and melon and delicious croissants.
I highly recommend this resort.
Place is not what it says it is. This is not a 5 star hotel. When you go to. 5 star establishment you expect certain “essential” things like:
-food
-and WiFi streaming services
This hotel offers none of these things. Yes beautiful place but there is no food from
10:30 — 12:30 if you miss lunch. There is no way to steam tv (mind you this is Europe in a 5 star “hotel”) not some remote island.
Also no pool service in September because it’s “low season”. This place is a tourist trap do NOT come here. Save money and go to a holiday inn where you don’t pay much and have the same services. Complete trash. 🚮
Back for the second year running for a 3 generation family holiday, it’s a beautiful resort kept in immaculate condition with amazing food and lovely staff. The spa and gym are top class and the new restaurant at that pool was our favourite place to lunch, lots of healthy options after working out and swimming, would highly recommend.
This is a great hotel in a very superb location. The garden is outstanding as well as the beach and pools. Breakfast buffet was excellent and the food fresh and excellent and staff super service oriented.
The rooms are very spacious and all junior suites.
However we had some problems with little ants in our suite and this problem could not really be solved. This was disappointing.
Perfect stay, calm, romantic, TOP! Many good restaurants, pools, good calm music, beautiful green area, very kind people, top service. Realy perfect for us
Great stay. Attentive and very friendly staff - beautiful smiles and genuine care from everyone. Everything was very clean. Stayed in a Jr. Suite with an ocean view — and the view is just a view because this means your room is the highest elevation, which is because you’re furthest away from the beach and more up the hill. It was completely fine, as the resort is not that big. Overall, the stay was very nice. Only two things that were not perfect: (1) the bathtub faucet and drain didn’t function well, so no bath; (2) power outlets were not available on both sides of the bed, which made charging and having a clock bed-side not possible. I’m sure we could have called maintenance on #1, but we just showered instead. #2 is a limitation of older concrete hotels.
Ps. We got a great recommendation for dinner from the concierge that was off-property (on-property venues were booked). Olivalmar — it was one of our best meals in Portugal. Don’t feel trapped to stay and eat at the hotel; there are lots of good options nearby.
We had a fantastic stay for our baby moon!
-Room was very large and clean. Beautiful balcony. We didn’t use the tub, but it was pretty and there was a large shower with his and her shower heads. Lots of squishy or firm pillows.
-Stunning views and gardens wherever you look!
-Breakfast was amazing! It ends at 10:30am, but if you come near the closing time, they have absolutely everything still there.
-we ate at the Coral restaurant which was fantastic and upscale. We also went twice to the Italian restaurant and could have gone every night - both were incredible!
-the beach is gorgeous and there are kayaks and paddle boards for rental down at the beach. Beautiful chair and umbrella set up! Other reviews state that there are not enough chairs, however, if you don’t see one open, just ask the beach attendant and he will get an umbrella and a chair for you, so this is not an issue.
-All of the staff at reception, the spa, the beach, and all the restaurants were amazing and very friendly, always in a great mood and making us feel welcome. A special thank you to Sandea for being so welcoming and kind.
-I had a maternity massage at the spa and had Maria. It was amazing and I would highly recommend it!
We had a wonderful stay at the Vilalara and were blown away by our beautiful room with an ocean view as well as the experienced staff at the hotel. We had a particularly pleasant experience with Guest Experience Manager Sandra Monteiro, who went out of her way to arrange private transport for us as well as other requests. The star of the show at this property is the beach— it will take your breath away and the stairs down to the beach are not bad at all. We hope to return to this little slice of heaven!
A top spot to really feel the luxury of Algarve. Beautiful gardens, unbelievable scenery over the cliffs and beach, decoration in general set the pace for a remarquable stay at this trendy hotel. Elegant luxury. Not flashy!
The best family hotel we have visited in Portugal. Top facilities in a top location. The staff were amazing. The food was excellent. 2 weeks of perfect holiday. Thank you!
