Valet was much appreciated.
it was close to downtown and a cool setting
parking was a little far away
We loved the historic nature of this hotel. These were luxury accommodations in the 1920s. Six US presidents as well as the cast and crew from the movie North by Northwest stayed here. Easy drive to Mount Rushmore. Great Pub on the lower level and cool restaurant at the top. Service was very good.
Great location, beautiful hotel.
Room and beds were small.
I stayed for 3 nights with my family. We had a one bedroom suite. The suite was very small, barely bigger than the king bed in the bedroom and the sofabed in the living room. The bathroom was pretty tiny, not big enough for 4 towels without hanging them on random doorknobs. There was no door between the two rooms.
We arrived around 5PM, and our room was not ready yet. We were given two $15 vouchers for Starbucks to be used the next day only for the inconvenience. That was nice. When I made the reservation, I noted that there would be 4 of us in the room. When we got to the room, there were only 2 towels in the room, and there were no pillows for the sofabed. Also, the sofabed was brand new, and so the moving straps had not been removed, and the sofabed could not be opened. I had to call down to the front desk to bring scissors to open up the sofabed and to bring up more towels and pillows.
The room was pretty loud. I could hear the elevator's chimes and also people walking in the halls. There was a pigeon nest outside one of the windows, and we could hear them cooing and flapping their wings.
The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were not great. The bathroom, as mentioned, was small with very little counter or shelf space. The shower/bath combo was cramped with a cloth curtain. Water pressure was not great, and even on the hottest setting, the water wasn't very warm and was very susceptible to getting colder.
We were in town to visit the nearby sites, so we were out of the room most of the days. Imagine my surprise after returning that no housekeeping came after our first night. That was weird. After our second night, the housekeeper had come and made up the bedroom but not the living room (sofabed not made). She (she left a card with her name, Melaney) took the towels and again left only two clean towels. She did not take out the trash in any room. I was exhausted after a full day of driving and sightseeing, and the last thing I wanted to do was call down to the front desk to ask for two more towels and fresh sheets for the sofabed. It was very frustrating.
Parking. The hotel itself only offers valet parking. There is a lot of street parking, and it is only $1/hour from 7am to 6pm on weekdays, $0.50/hour from 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. There's an app, so you can remember your space # and pay from your phone in the morning.
The location really is wonderful, and there are neat historical things about the hotel. The kids loved looking at all the pictures and the stuffed bison heads. The staff was friendly, even if the hotel wasn't run particularly well.
It’s quirky and completely central.
The cost of valet parking your car. There is free 2 hr parking a few blocks away but that’s not enough for a stay so one has to use the hotel valet service
We love the location and the view
The bathroom was extremely small
STARBUCKS Breakfast inside Hotel was typical. We enjoyed sitting on 2nd floor to read and overlook the beautiful downstairs fireplace and furnishings.
Beautiful corner room on 9th floor overlooked the city... enjoyed watching snow fall on our last day.
Parking situation for hotel, especially on weekdays, is inconvenient.
The history, and location. Absolutely everything!
Nothing
The location was good. Bed was comfortable.
The water in the shower was lukewarm. We paid 40.00 extra for a free breakfast and got gift card to Starbucks. The restaurant is not open on Sunday.
The history here is really unique. Nice homage to the Native Americans. Many famous people have stayed here, and it is fun to look at the wall of famous guest's pictures near the elevator. The second floor has many interesting old photos of the hotel and area. The location is walkable to the whole downtown. There is a Starbucks attached to the hotel, and the chunky chipmunk chocates attached to the lobby are really good. The food in the Irish bar, attached to the hotel, is quite good, and the views from the rooftop bar are amazing. The rooms are small, but modern and have everything you need. They are doing some room remodels, floor by floor. It will be nice when all of the floors are finished being remodeled. The star of the whole place are it's employees. They are so fun and entertaining and attentive. They are proud of the hotel's history. I didn't stay on the 8th floor, but I roamed the hallway and didn't see any supernatural stuff. Lol. In fact, it was a very restful stay. :)
Thank you, staff, for a wonderful stay.
The only good thing about this place is its location, but it's still not worth the price.
A house keeper came into my room completely unannounced and without permission. I was in the room and had the Do Not Disturb sign out. It's unbelievable (and terrifying) how unprofessional and careless the house keeper was. What's even more disappointing is the way the hotel handled the incident after I reported it -- they did nothing about it. All I'm looking for is some assurance that they would safety and privacy issues seriously and would make efforts to prevent such things from happening again. However, the hotel did not reach out to me by phone (like the front desk promised me they would do) or respond to my email. It is extremely concerning.
Aside from that, the room is very small and old for its price. There was no desk, which is inconvenient for business travelers.
I will not return to this hotel next time I'm in Rapid City, and I certainly do not recommend it to anyone else.
