I felt compelled to write a review following our return from a 3 night stay. We encountered a range of issues with our stay that are unacceptable for a 4 star hotel.
We stayed in the Baker Suite and the state of the room was unacceptable:
Broken toilet seat
Only 1 of 3 windows opened
Stains on the walls, curtains, carpet and furniture
Peeling wallpaper
Broken floor tiles
Black or missing grout from floor and wall tiles
Torn curtains
Cobwebs
Our child's camp bed broke leaving her sleeping on the floor
At breakfast on day 1, I nearly swallowed a piece of tin foil that was in the smoothie jug. I let a waitress know as it could have been quite serious had I swallowed it as it was sharp. Day 2, we waited for over 40 minutes for our breakfast. The continental buffet was akin to a Travelodge offering.
Day 3, staff delivered burnt toast to our table, the plates at the buffet were all dirty and to cap it off, my child then nearly swallowed another piece of tin foil that was in her smoothie. At this point, I took the tin foil to the front office to report it directly.
Swimming pool area was not clean. Ventilation is very poor, particularly in the changing rooms. Everywhere very tired.
It appears that the only investment this hotel has had is a flashy website however the reality does not match it and thus it will only ever have disappointed customers. Having spent a lot of money for our 3 night stay, we feel robbed and bitterly disappointed. Very sad.
Loved my short stay at this wonderful hotel. It was like stepping back in history and living in a stately home. First class service from the staff and marvellous food too. As for the grounds and gardens ! It was just so relaxing and calming walking around the extensive and peaceful grounds surrounding the house and visiting the family church in the woods. Would definitely recommend and will be returning again as soon as I can.
We had a 2 night stay with our parents. The four of us were treated so well from the moment we checked in.
The food is absolutely lovely, the breakfast has a lovely full English selection as well as continental breakfast.
The evening meal was excellent - very high quality food. Good wine selection too.
The rooms are large and well appointed with stunning views. Many of the rooms are shower over a bath - so be sure to check if you need a walk in shower.
The staff were amazing - so many great people work work there. A few people that really stood out were: Christine, Illyena, Oliver, Holly and Sophie.
The hotel is also dog friendly which is nice.
Finally - there is free electric car charging which (three plugs), which is a nice bonus.
Oh dear, there’s something not quite right here. You are surrounded by bucolic beauty and the building itself is stunning, although some of the decor not my taste, but that’s personal.
One of the problems is the sheer size of the place, meaning not only do you get lost but it takes ages to get anywhere. I was only staying one night and there seemed to be few other guests so why was I placed far away on the top floor? It did have a lovely view but they were gable windows and blinds did not keep out early morning light. Having said that it was a spacious room with lovely bedding. Couldn’t have a bath as I would be waiting about 3 days for it to fill! the shower was okay but no grab rails. On that issue, anyone with mobility issues would have great difficulty in this hotel and don’t how access to the pool would be possible? There is a small lift to upper floors but continually encountering further staircases.
I didn’t want a full dinner, especially as travelling alone but was accommodated with a single course. For me breakfast left a lot to desire, not least as everything took so long and some ordered items didn’t arrive. At this point the establishment felt like the Marie Celeste! Finally tracked down everyone in reception having a chat. Sadly this just isn’t good enough for such accommodation which would seem to be setting itself as a moderately upmarket country house hotel. It’s an unwieldy beast but has potential to be so much more, extra guests would a better atmosphere
Nice weekend break
Lovely location and grounds, old country house, felt a bit like being in Downton Abbey! Some aspects of room a bit tired - cracked chipped tiles in bathroom. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast excellent, nice swimming pool and gym. Information about the hotel and a map in the room would have been helpful.
Best hotel stay ever. Felt more like a home than a hotel. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful in every way
Stapleford park is an enjoyably stay, the rooms are specious but the bathroom was date and needed some tlc.
The restaurant and bar were well staffed with more attention to the customer. Generally good but work needed.
The service needs to be improved very chaotic at times and self service breakfast was v poor
Lovely and quiet location but a little tired and bar service on the night was very slow.
Fantastic property, beautiful views.
Stunning setting for a romantic weekend away. Relaxed in the pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, but a few extra chairs/loungers around the pool are needed, as well as a poolside shower. Would have liked to see the bar snacks available beyond 7pm, but several local pubs serve great food. Staff friendly and helpful, particularly the young girls in the breakfast room. Breakfast was excellent. Large room with a comfortable bed. I would recommend a stay for a special occasion.
Hotel, Grounds, Room, Facilities are all 5 out of 5. Food was a real let down though (1 out of 5). All meals were incredibly bland, with the Afternoon Tea being the worst we have ever had - Stale bread, plain fillings and flat desserts. Scones were the only saving grace. Such a shame that the dining experiences do not live up to the standards set by the rest of this hotel.
Very disappointing stay. The first impressions of the hotel and wonderful grounds are let down by the tired, 90s, care home style of the bedrooms. The decor is tired and shabby. Our bed runner had soms suspect stains, the bathroom pelmet was hanging down and shower was tempeemental.
Dinner was a letdown, not sure how it was awarded AA Rosettes. Breakfast was also very poor- lack of food out or crockery and poached eggs I ordered were watery.
This place could be amazing with some investment and attention to detail
Lovely room
Not enough lighting, make up mirror would nice. Grounds very well maintained. No table service for breakfast. Could have been a breakfast menu.
Really good evening dinner
Hotel rooms need renovating. Nice friendly staff but the poor quality of the rooms lets the place down. Rooms 43 in particular was very poorly kept. Shower pressure not very good with hot water and sink drainage needs sorting. Toilet seats need to be screwed tightly in room 45. Nice traditional feel to the Hotel which can still be maintained after renovation.
All staff were so accommodating and welcoming
An excellent place to stay for quiet reflection with delightful grounds and a stunning building. Restaurant food is high calibre.
Everything I hoped for.
