Fantastic hotel in a great location with very helpful staff

This is the heritage hotel as I expected. The room, service and breakfast food were all awesome. I love that it's across the street from the Opera House or House of Congress. I love that they know how to cherish the hotel heritage with a dedicated wall with memorable photos. Very classy.

We arrived early morning after a night spent in airplanes. The staff welcomed us friendly, made accommodations for the very early check-in and ushered us to a large room with hardwood flooring, a giant bed, an excellent bathroom and matching furniture throughout. The breakfast buffet in the garden is rich, the staff is friendly, quick and helpful.
This was an experience beyond expectation.

The staff was very accomodative. Room is cliean and cleaners are very attentive. Buffet spread is good. Super strategic location.

Fantastic breakfast selection with large variety of Asian and Western options. Courtyard facing room was very quiet despite being in middle of the city. Good AC in room kept it cool and dry.

We prefer atmospheric hotels and the Contental didn't disappoint. Made famous by Graham Greene and a popular hangout for media during the Vietnam/American War, the hotel is full of atmosphere and heritage features. We particularly loved our spacious suite and the buffet breakfasts served in the delightful courtyard garden. The location is excellent (D1) and the staff are helpful, although the staff in the restaurant can be a little diffident.

Since 2007, I have stayed at the Continental and reserved rooms for friends and family over 50 times. The hotel is the oldest in Vietnam and a historical icon with a charm all its own. Right in the heart of District 1 across the street from the Opera House, it exudes an aura of the past and a forgotten era. Built in 1890, it survived wars and great social and political upheaval. The first time I saw the hotel was during the Vietnam War when I sat on a veranda with a glass of beer in 1969, and the last time during the same thing in 2026. Yes, it is not the newest, largest, or most expensive, and there are certainly 5-star hotels like the Park Hyatt and REX for those wanting 21st Milenia comfort and amenities, but with the Continental its part of experiencing the same kind of charm that Graham Greene did when he wrote "The Quiet American" and being able to just say you stayed there. The breakfast buffet was the best out of 7 five-star hotels I stayed, and although the power went out in our room once, and the water wasn't always hot, the staff was responsive and did all they could to meet our needs. If you want glitz and Michelin level lodging - stay somewhere else, but if you want to get a glimpse of what Vietnam was once like during the French Colonial era and stay in a hotel that has hosted some of the most famous people in history from Prime Ministers like Jacques Chirac to singers like Joan Baez and of course the author Graham Greene give it a try! I know I'll be back.
