Location and staff
No air conditioning
Location and garden are a real bonus. I was staying during the heatwave and would have liked air con
Room was large but unfortunately no air con
Breakfast
Cleanliness
Altehrwürdiges Hotel in Toplage.
It was our wedding anniversary and as a result they kindly upgraded us to a beautiful room in the main building with a lovely display and card on the bed. The weather was insane that week so it was a welcome relief to have a small portable air con unit.
The location is fantastic, right in the mide of town, but nice and quiet.
We will definitely look to stay again in the future.
Perfectly positioned in edge of Winchester s in can walk everywhere. Lovely large sunny garden at the rear. Friendly and helpful staff throughout.
The location of the hotel was ideal as walking distance to Winchester and the hotel grounds were beautiful with lots of ourdoor seating and umbrellas. Above all the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly and cheerful.
The rooms we had facing the carpark were extremely hot even with fans, unbearably so as we were experiencing a heatwave. With no air-conditioning it was ridiculously hot so much so we avoided being in the room at all costs.
Really close to centre quiet nice garden
Good choice of fruit, cereals , cooked breakfast. Eggs really nice , not overcooked.
Room basic but comfy bed. Hot shower, ample storage & hanging space. Nice shower gel available. Staff were helpful with parking , leaving car in the car park at 11am was so helpful. Staff in bar were friendly too .
No fridge , would have been good to put cold water / drinks in during 35 degree heat .Windows only 2 opened & had restrictors on so only opened small way in the hot weather , was stifling . Fan was good and helped a little . No lactose free milk or yogurt, no black pudding.
Location was excellent just off the High Street.
I liked the staff and facilities.
Hotel was quiet and particularly enjoyed the Bar Garden.
Breakfast plentiful and tasty and the service in the breakfast was particularly friendly.
Car park a bit small but that is it.
Nice garden to sit in for lunch or sundowners
Uninspiring restaurant menu. Had a plumbing problem in the morning with no hot water, but which was fixed by the evening.
Location of hotel. Very convenience for visiting the cathedral of old part of town.

The staff was super friendly and helpful plus very efficient. Great location
THe hotel is just a bit run down and old.
Location is good, hotel has private parking. And that's it really. We left after 5 minutes, as the reality didn't come close to what the photos on booking.com suggested. Please read the rest of this review why...
When entering this hotel, we immediately noticed the worn out carpetry. When we got our key from the reception and went up the stairs (no lift), the hallways on each floor were filled with laundry (this is after 4 PM, mind you). It was clear that this is a hotel that's in dire need of a thorough renovation. Paint was chipped everywhere, carpetry was worn out, wallpaper came off the walls. The room itself (not the cheapest option available) turned out to be horribly small, I could barely stand under the ceiling (I'm 1.90m), was hot and the floor was so crooked that the headrest of the bed was sitting about 15cm lower than the foot end. There was no way we would stay even a single night in this horror hotel, we left immediately. There was no cancellation option, so this was £145 down the drain in 5 minutes. Luckily we found a very comfortable hotel just outside of Winchester.
The location is great, just a few minutes walk to the main shopping area and Winchester Cathedral. The staff were also very good: friendly, polite and helpful. Breakfast was very good with a very good selection of continental or British-style foods. The dining room itself is also very pleasant.
The prices, especially for the weekend, are, quite frankly, outrageous for the standard of hotel it is. I thought I was booking a special hotel as part of my wife's birthday. We were staying in Winchester because we were having lunch with friends on the Sunday at the Hotel Du Vin. The room cost £398.00 for what was, frankly no better than a Premier Inn, and that is not meant to be disparaging to Premier Inn. For that price there was nothing special: no air conditioning in the room, for example, only a floor fan. The staff, who, as I've mentioned before, were very good, did arrange for there to be flowers and chocolates in the room when we arrived: but I paid an extra £45.00 for that! I overheard other people in the bar also complaining about the price and what you got for it. We could have stayed at the Hotel du Vin for pretty much the same price. What a shame we didn't: there is far more luxurious atmosphere to the place. Sorry Royal Winchester, but your pricing is way out of line.
