This is obviously not a destination hotel. It sits right opposite the airport terminal. Could not be easier to reach.
It's for weary travels stumbling off long haul flights, folks with an early departure, business meetings. And yet the staff here were some of the most helpful, efficient and friendly we've ever encountered. Our arrival here after an overnight flight from UK was as though we were old friends and they were delighted to look after us. What a welcome to South Africa.
Our room was clean, quiet and well-appointed.
It was great to have access to a gym and a pool - brilliant way to straighten our spines after trying to sleep on a plane.
Ate in the restaurant that evening and again the staff were so attentive. It's not fine dining but it is very good food with a fairly wide menu. Breakfast next morning set us up for hitting the road and starting our exploring.
It's not often an airport hotel excites me - but I wish they were all like this. Even waved us off in our hire vehicle.
A very welcome stopover night here in luxurious surroundings. Clean and comfortable with good service in the bar and restaurant. Good prices too.
The hotel is immediately outside the arrival terminal, 5 minute walk. Do not use a shuttle or taxi. Furnishings are out of Architectural Digest. Very clean. Use the spa after a long flight. I recommend arriving a day early to allow adjusting to the new time zone and touring Johannesburg.
Good continental breakfast, with great a la carte options. nice service. Andile was very nice and entertaining
From the meet and greet at the airport baggage claim to the quick escorted walk over to the hotel where we beat quite a crowd of airline employees for check-in, everything was five star. Dinner at the restaurant was fantastic, wife is a new diamond elite member for IHG and they put us in a nice suite with our adult children in a corner room next to us.
Room was very comfortable, spacious and seriously soundproof. Stayed here two nights with the two rooms. This is an expensive hotel for Johannesburg, but was well worth the added cost for the convenience.
After a 5 day safari we had a 10 hour layover, headed back to the Intercontinental to see about a day room, which I had emailed about from the Safari three or four times but communication issues were pretty horrid, and every reply from their reservation teams truncated all previous communication, so it was a giant spinning wheel with them, that would be my only complaint about this hotel. We did come back for lunch during the layover and to inquire in person about a room, which was available at $250 per room ( with checking in at 3 & a check out at six, and no more than two people in a room,so our family of four couldn’t hang out in one room.) Didn’t seem to be any special consideration for diamond members, so jury is still out whether the IHG elite status means much of anything,it did at checkin but not for dayroom.
Terrific experience. Far surpassed our expectations! Thanks you Andile for a lovely breakfast!
The Intercontinental in Joburg was a perfect stop for our one night layover - it was clean with very good service and a great breakfast. Would recommend for anyone with an overnight layover
Excellent experience , from reception arrival , room, amenities, restaurant staff , food and service . Whole team is absolutely great , like Andile and everyone else in the restaurant . Great value .
I chose this hotel for its convenient location and complimentary airport meet-greet. Felt very safe staying here. Topping it off was the wonderful hospitality from all the staff I met and the excellent food was a bonus.
Super convenient and a short walk to the airport! I have stayed at the Intercontinental several times when passing through Johannesburg. The service is always top notch and the restaurant offers a nice dining experience.

Excellent in every way. Beautiful room, excellent check in. Excellent helpful staff who went out of their way to show us directions. It was only an overnight stay for us but wish we could have stayed a couple more days.
Food was delicious and all the staff were amazing. The hotel is steps from
the airport. No need for transportation. Thank you very much to Lilian and Wonder for their outstanding service at lunch. We had 4 meals at the Quills Restaurant and they were all amazing. Don’t have all the staffs name but they were all very good. Only stayed one night. Highly recommend a massage at the spa. Great way to end our vacation and start our long journey home to Canada.
The Intercontinental at the Johannesburg airport is in a perfect location for travellers. The service is exceptional. Considering the price however, my room smelled musty, like a dirty hotel room from the 70's. All they would have to do to get rid of that horrible smell is likely to update the carpet. A pretty easy fix. Everything else was fantastic, the shower was great, my room had an amazing soaker tub, the bed is super comfortable and the pillows are perfect!...but personally I would much rather stay in a room that smelled nice, than a room that offers turn down service and smells dirty and musty. Also, the room is nice, but for the price, very small. Over all, not worth the extra money. Their closest competitor's room is just as big, the room doesn't smell and it includes a breakfast.
We are on our once in a lifetime Safari adventures in South Africa and our first night was at the Intercontinental hotel across the street from the airport here
The hotel is luxurious, very comfortable, and the staff is friendly, welcoming, very professional, and provide outstanding service
We had a delicious breakfast at the hotel restaurant,“Quills” and our server,Wonder, went above and beyond in taking excellent care of us for our delicious morning dining experience. He provided outstanding service from the time we sat down until we left the restaurant.
Kudos to WONDER!!
An excellent choice for an airport stay before of after a flight. It was only a two minute walk from the airport exit, yet I never heard a plane while in my room. The room was spacious and well equipped and the hotel overall was clean and well maintained.
Intercontinental Johannesburg Airport Hotel
Super close to the domestic and International terminal, and I was pleasantly surprised at how lovely the hotel and staff were (only because we thought it would be an airport hotel with plentiful visitors). We were warmly greeted at reception, congratulated ok our anniversary trip.
- Room; lovely room which was decorated for us as we were celebrating our anniversary on our trip. The bathroom had Byredo products, always a pleasure to use and plenty of drinking water and Nespresso. The rooms are dated but for a one night stay, they are perfectly comfortable.
- Restaurant; great selection of food and drinks. The breakfast had a large variety of items too.
- Facilities; it’s a large hotel with all the facilities you expect and friendly staff.
A very nice hotel with friendly service and quite above-average dining. Best of all, literally a 90-second walk from the airport. Super convenient.
We stayed overnight following a long flight from Sydney. Our experience was awesome. Greeted on arrival, checked in smoothly, room was lovely - even came with a coffee machine and teapot. Amazing staff, especially our breakfast waiter Wonder.
His smile was infectious and his service 5 star.
Concierge staff were also very helpful, recommending dinner options and day tours - all with a private driver to ensure our safety and comfort.
Highly recommend for anyone travelling to SA.
We had an absolutely lovely stay at the InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo! Even though we were only there for one night, everything about our experience was exceptional. The staff are some of the friendliest and most welcoming we’ve ever met. Our room was spacious, spotless, and incredibly quiet—exactly what we needed before our flight.
The location couldn’t be more convenient—it’s literally just steps from the airport, which made everything so easy for us. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly, and both the food and drinks were outstanding. We had dinner at Quills, and it was to die for! Breakfast the next morning included both a buffet and entrée options, and everything was absolutely delicious. Our server was so kind and attentive (I wish I could remember his name!).
To make our stay even more special, guest relations surprised us with a romantic honeymoon setup—roses, a slice of chocolate cake, and a bottle of wine. It was such a thoughtful touch and really showed how much they care about their guests.
The hospitality here is truly outstanding. When we returned a week later for a quick layover, the team actually remembered us and even recalled details about our trip—that level of care is rare and so appreciated.
We would stay here again in a heartbeat. If you’re flying through Johannesburg, this hotel is an absolute gem!
