What you would expect for a resort
Pros:

If acceptance is a rating then I did not and still do not feel like my children were accepted for trying to do yoga on the beach. Was going to go with a ‘good’ rating until my conversion with the owner/manager. I have 2 daughters-15 and 10-that regularly do yoga with me. We thought it would be fun to do it together on the beach. When we arrived at the class we were told by the instructor that it was full even though there were only 2-3 others there and 2 showed up after us and ‘kids aren’t allowed, only ages 16 and up’. Once I realized the vibe was off, she practically glared at me and my kids for having the audacity to show up to her class, I left. The ladies that arrived a little after us were allowed in.
I wrote this on my review and Joel got back to me a few weeks later apologising and saying he would talk to the instructor. I sent a response back thanking him that if children aren’t allowed and that there are only a few spots that perhaps the schedule should reflect this when people show up so they’re not turned away.
A week or so later I received another email this time accusing me of showing up late to a full class. It felt like I was on trial. I only wanted to point out my experience with this one person and now I’m the problem. I don’t understand why businesses ask about surveys and then work to make you feel like you did something wrong.
So in summary it’s a typical resort-beautiful place, decent food yet overpriced, good food and beverage staff, clean rooms, and poorly managed activities. (I also had to call the front desk to get someone to open the snorkel gear shack because no one was in there at when they were supposed to be open).
I hope the business takes this as an opportunity to work on this. I believe that’s the point of the review process.

Mission Accomplished!?
Pros:

The Buccaneer’s mission is for every guest to return and we will! We had a fabulous week here with family. The resort is spacious and gracious; casual and yet classy.

Three beaches, three solid restaurants, games, fun, fire dancing and more.
Great place for kids… great place for old kids.

We will return!

1 star service 4 star resort
Pros:

The property is stunning and we were upgraded on arrival, which made for a great first impression. Walking the grounds and watching the fire dancers was a highlight.

Unfortunately, the service didn’t match the setting. If you don’t reserve restaurants before you arrive, there may be nothing available to eat that night. We arrived at 3 PM and everything was already booked.

Housekeeping was worse. The shower gel dispenser was broken and never replaced during our stay. At one point the water to the room stopped working in the middle of the day. Trash wasn’t removed, and it took six attempts over two days just to get someone to sweep the sand covered floors. We finally got a broom to sweep the room ourselves.

After checkout the hotel repeatedly called about a small charge that hadn’t processed, even though I told them I would call back once I had reception. The repeated calls and lack of trust left a disappointing final impression. They keep loosing the my credit card number.

Beautiful property, but the service does not match a **$900 per night** resort.

Relaxing/Peaceful vacation
Pros:

This was our third vacation to the peaceful Buccaneer. We return for our Anniversary celebration & spend ten days with them at the beautiful resort.

It is an easy 15 minute drive from the airport. Upon arrival you are treated as a family member with the reception staff for a flawless check

The complementary morning breakfast is delicious as you walk the buffets to choose your morning meal; while you get to enjoy the breathtaking view of the sea below.

We always enjoy our stay at the Buccaneer. The staff is perfect in every way possible; making for a wonderful relaxing & peaceful vacation.

We are already looking forward to our return to the Buccaneer next year!

Great place to stay on St Croix!
Pros:

We had a great stay at the Buccaneer resort! The staff was outstanding, and the rooms, grounds, and restaurants are all excellent. We also loved the beach area, so beautiful. I would highly recommend staying here if you are going to St Croix.

Perfect and Relaxing Girls Trip
Pros:

This resort was the perfect choice for a girls trip. Safe, beautiful views, great food at the 3 restaurants, and the staff was outstanding. The staff knew our names and greeted us by name even if they were not serving us. This includes people carrying luggage, front desk staff and especially the wait staff at the restaurants. Specific staff that were outstanding included: Mayra, Bianca, Claude and Cassandra.

We stayed in a Luxury Ocean View room that was near the Sugar Mill and the Great House. This location was about a 5 minute walk to the beach and a 10 minute walk to the pool. It was 3 minutes to the main house with a large restaurant and complimentary breakfast. The resort rooms was very quiet and peaceful. The room was impeccably clean with soft sheets. Rooms were serviced daily by requesting with lanyard on door.

Mermaid beach was our favorite with lots of chairs and staff that served you from the beach.

Live Music at The Terrace in the evenings was wonderful. I enjoyed several excellent fish dishes at the Terrace. We also enjoyed the fire dancers at a delicious dinner at Beauregards. Made reservations for dinners about two weeks in advance of our stay with the concierge.

Location was about 20-30minutes from airport and about 8 minutes by taxi to Christiansted. We did a 1/2 snorkling excursion with Carribean Sea Adventures to Buck Island and this is highly recommended tour company.

Taxi driver that is highly recommended is Joseph at 340-277-6133. Safe and reasonably priced.

Overall this resort proved to be the perfect location for a girls trip. We only left the resort once because we enjoyed the atmosphere so much.

Caution staying here in current political climate
Pros:

I suggest extreme caution in booking any stays at this hotel in the current political climate. We booked a stay at the hotel arriving on January 3; unfortunately for us, the FAA closed airspace when they conducted a military operation in Venezuela to capture the president. Anyways, our flight was cancelled and we would not have been able to rebook for several days. We had read about stranded passengers in the Caribbean and decided it didn’t make sense to try to go for only a few days, particularly when so many people were trying to leave.

We weren’t unprepared—we had travel insurance. However, we learned acts of war weren’t covered by our plan.

Given the extenuating circumstances we tried to work with the hotel to see if they would honor a refund. Their answer was no that per their policy was that we were on the hook for two nights of our six night stay ($3700 of the $9000 stay that included two rooms). I reached out numerous times to customer service (Benjamin) explaining our situation to try to find a solution—this was a trip we had saved up to take my elderly parents on and my daughter to celebrate her 5th birthday and heartiversary before her next procedure—but I was ghosted by Benjamin.

I know from news reports that many hotels profited off of this whole debacle—stranded passengers that were price gouged for last minute accommodations. I suspect that the Buccaneer did not lose money.

FWIW, the airlines, airport parking, rental car company, excursion companies, and our dog boarder all reimbursed us. The Buccaneer Resort is the only business that refused. Of note, we did book the hotel through Priceline, who promptly sent us money for the refundable part of our trip; Priceline also tried to contact the hotel on our behalf without success. We did try to book direct (not sure this would have helped us), but per Benjamin, the website wasn’t reflecting their promotional pricing so we just booked through Priceline since it was easier.

I’m sad that my family didn’t get to take this trip and that we lost so much money even though we were prepared with travel insurance.

I hope this warning helps others considering Caribbean travel—make sure you figure out the cancellation policy for your accommodations for situations like this or you could be out a lot of money.

Wonderful week in paradise
Pros:

Had the most relaxing week for our 43rd wedding anniversary. As others have said, the rooms could use a bit of upkeep (the shower control was loose, a burnt out lightbulb didn’t get replaced) and it’s not an inexpensive trip — but the staff is so wonderful, and the grounds and beaches are maintained so beautifully — that nothing else really matters. Hoping to return!

Tropical Paradise
Pros:

Great surroundings, friendly professional staff, fine food, perfect beach experience. The Buccaneer exceeded all of our expectations.

We came for the tropical beach and were not disappointed. We spent our time at Mermaid beach, but there are two others if that ever got crowded. Dozens of comfortable beach chairs with a sort of mesh fabric material, plenty of umbrellas and small tables. You are right next to the Mermaid restaurant and bar and friendly servers check on you frequently. The resort provides free access to everything from snorkels and goggles, towels to kayaks. Everything was clean and the sandy beach was well maintained. No sea grass or rocks, just soft sand out into the ocean. Perfect.

We got a ridge room which had a great view and was a bit secluded. Very close to the lobby and the daily breakfast buffet in The Terrace. But a bit of a hike, up hill, back from the beach. A courtesy van can drive you. Besides being very spacious, including a sort of walk through closet with plenty of storage, the highlight was our patio with two lounge chairs. We were here when not at the beach, even at night because the low was 75 degrees. Highly recommend the ridge room, which the website might call luxury oceanfront room.

The dinners rotate among the three restaurants each night. Dinner was great at the Terrace, great view of the beach and a live pianist playing standards. But dinner at Beauregard, literally on Grotto Beach, was amazing. We had dinner at sunset, very good soft tacos, and after the sunset a fun show of people twirling fire. A breathtaking setting.

The concierge booked cabs for us, using drivers that contract with the resort and they use a standard rate sheet. The concierge was helpful with planning outings for us. Like all staff we encountered, they were friendly and professional.

The resort was well maintained, clean, well landscaped and decorated. This place is a gem. It is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. And the Buccaneer was worth every penny. We will be back.

The Buccaneer still is the best family resort in USVI
Pros:

Our family of five joined several other family friends at The Buccaneer each spring break during our kid’s school years. Our children are now married, and we are blessed with three grand children. We decided to return to The Buccaneer with our now family of 11.

Everyone had an amazing time. Our grand daughter told us she never wanted to leave. The Buccanneer property and beaches have only gotten better. Their Director of Front Office, Nadia Bougouneau, was very helpful in planning our trip and making sure each experience was amazing. It was like a family reunion with so many of the staff who still have those wonderful smiles at the amazing breakfast buffet, front desk, and bar. The beach wait staff at both incredible beaches pampered us with attentive service and amazing food and drinks. Leila greeted us with a smile and a kind word each day as she made sure our beach experience was relaxing for us and fun for our grand kids.

Our family can’t wait to return.

Comfort in paradise!
Pros:

The Buccaneer is the absolute best place to stay in the Virgin Islands. Beautiful rooms, outstanding amenities, pristine beaches and wonderful food. It has it all. And the staff made us feel like we were part of the family. Not many places give you an opportunity to speak one on one with the owner. Elizabeth, thank you for a wonderful vacation. We’ll be back soon.

Wonderful-- truly!
Pros:

I feel at a loss to describe the true hospitality and peace we experienced at this hotel. We ended up there completely by accident -- we thought we would be able to get on a chartered plane from St. Croix (we were in St Thomas and unable to go home on commercial flights due to the military operation in Venezuela). That didn't pan out and we stayed in St. Croix for an extra day.

The staff, everything, really everything about this place seems almost magical. When our 8 year old daughter (loudly) expressed worry about the safety of our returning flight to nyc, one of the staff members-- I never got her name unfortunately-- hugged her and reassured her so lovingly it brought me to tears.

If we return to the Caribbean (we were stuck there for 15 days), we would absolutely stay at The Buccaneer. Thank you.

Needs new ownership
Pros:

Beautiful rooms and wonderful staff but the resort has problems. The so-called “private “ beach is stacked 4-deep in plastic chairs because the hotel sells chairs to anyone who shows up for $50 a piece. Meals on the beach can take 2 hours to get. There are signs saying “no cell phones “ but no one enforces it so people play music and talk loudly all around you. At breakfast one day, a big table of non-hotel guests sat down next to us and a little boy took out an iPad and started watching TV at full volume. I asked the server if that was allowed and she said “We used to be able to tell people not to do that but the owners told us that now we’re allowed to say anything”. Dinner prices are very steep and food is mediocre.
Tennis is great and there’s a nice jogging path. The views are stunning.
This could be a top notch hotel but it needs someone to make it classier and more efficient.

A Vacation Gem
Pros:

The Buccaneer offers beautiful views, lovely grounds, and warm and friendly staff. Our room had an a/c issue but the staff attended to the problem, followed up to see that all was well, and always put our convenience and comfort first. The room was quiet and clean and I appreciated the tile floors allowing for minimal sand. I would suggest some paper towels and access to a broom/dust pan to even further help with keeping everything fresh. The beach was a great space to relax and the chairs, tables, etc. where in very good condition. The upper pool allowed for a private swim workout that felt luxurious. Leila was helpful in giving advice for swimming in the ocean and Aldrich was very attentive at the front desk. The breakfast staff and quality varied a little, the omelet bar was consistently good. Other items were very good some days and less so others. Overall though, it was nice to have the buffet each day. The dinners were delicious at both the Terrace and Mermaid restaurants. This was our second visit and we look forward to returning!

Warning!!
Pros:

Warning: Stay away from 2nd floor rooms facing the front at The Buccaneer, St. Croix! I checked into the main building and thought I'd be getting a relaxing stay... nope. Got woke up by loud golf carts, slamming car doors, and loud phone talks. Went to front desk to complain and got a major attitude. One staff member (tall guy with glasses) was super unhelpful and basically argued with me . If you want sleep, avoid 2nd floor front-facing rooms like the plague. Not worth it.

Beautiful beach resort
Pros:

Great location! It was easy to head down to the beautiful beaches and enjoy towels and lounge chairs provided by the hotel. The front desk was very helpful in arranging taxis and in lending towels for excursions where we might get wet. Our room was large and well-appointed with a beautiful balcony. The Terrace Restaurant had a delicious buffet breakfast each morning with a wide array of hot and cold choices, and the view from this covered patio is phenomenal.

What kept this resort from being perfect for us was their sense of time. We couldn't walk ourselves to our room at checkin (literally 15 feet from the front desk, it turned out!) -- we had to wait 20 minutes for a bellhop after a long flight. One evening, the restaurant was slammed because of a widespread power outage, and could not honor our reservation -- we were told it would be two hours to be seated, or one hour to receive room service. Room service actually came after two and a half hours. Although we understood the unusual situation, we would have appreciated more transparency in both cases.

Staff a 10stars hotel room 211 ( low 3stars)
Pros:

Upon checking in, we were greeted with a warm welcome and a very clean lobby. We entered our room and our pre-requested amenities were provided extra towels, a clean, working iron enough bed pillows, and also a little welcome gift because it was our anniversary getaway of 19 years of marriage cannot say enough about the staff. They are on a scale of 1 to 5 a 10,, the room was adequate. Was it a four or five star rating no more like a three there were stains, visible in the bathroom on a switch cover by the toilet, above the toilet, there was a small rack that I had visible signs of heavy rust damage the vanity mirror to the right as you walk in had evidence of age and rust and damage to the paint on the wall the mirror shows its age which is fine, but the little capping that holds the mirror was missing the little covers, which made it look a little more less, appealing the towel bar by the shower residue of paint on the bar, the two bedside tables wobble as the feet need little casters. I had a wedge a piece of cardboard to keep the table from rocking side to side , next to the patio door, there is a small screen, which does not properly secure so bugs can enter into the room. Yes, we were excessively bitten at night. The coffee nook has evidence of staining on the drawer, which could’ve been easily covered up with a little paint prior to our arrival as well as the armoire. When you open the doors, they said, and the drawers rub into them and see evidence of prior damage when the drawers was a little wobbly so I went to fix it and you could see all the dirt underneath the drawer. No one’s ever cleaned there , we start our empty luggage bags on top of the armoire when we’re moving them was surprised to see all the dust pad stuck to it. No one’s ever cleaned up there either , well all was a pleasant day, but a 5 star No, a 4 star No , a low 3stars on room yes we stayed in the main guest house room 211 as we did not want to have to walk every morning up the hill for breakfast. The food was very good. The price is a little high, but again the staff were wonderful. Any interaction we had was pleasant. I never raised Room concerns to the staff while I was visiting as I know there’s nothing they could do at the moment. Hopefully now they will.

First Class Family Resort
Pros:

This was our first visit to the Buccaneer and it lived up to being a world class family destination. The service was impeccable, the grounds were immaculate, and the staff was like family. They overdelivered on every aspect. We came to celebrate anniversaries, but were treated more like royalty. We really appreciated the friendliness of the staff from the front desk to the restaurants, to the grounds, and thoroughly enjoyed our time - they truly became family. This may have been our first but it won't be our last. We plan on making this a focal point of our future travel.

Excellent time at the Buc!
Pros:

Amazing! The beaches are beautiful and well kept. The staff are excellent! Every encounter was friendly and positive. We really enjoyed the varied locations on site for dining and beach or poolside. We did not have young children but saw plenty who were clearly having the time of their lives. Definitely a shout out to Claude who greeted us on our arrival - he was fun, personable, knowledgeable, and made us feel right at home after a long travel day for my husband, daughter, and me. We can’t leave out Bianca at Mermaid Beach. We spent many lazy days at Mermaid with Bianca as our server. She is a JOY! We truly looked forward to seeing her smiling face!
Room was spacious, beds comfortable and AC worked as it should (something you appreciate in St. Croix).
Free breakfasts were excellent! Lots of food choices, everything fresh. Dinners varied at each of the restaurants but overall taste was delicious!
Plenty to do without having to leave the Buc, and plenty to do on the island.
Location is 5 stars! Gorgeous! Highly recommend!
