This hotel exuded French ambiance with beautiful grounds and gardens..
Wonderful gardens!
Luxury from start to finish!
The hotel, location and FOOD was divine! We loved our stay here and will be back.
We would have liked a little bench or stool to put our clothes on in the room and a steamer, but everything else was perfect.
Overall nice property with beautiful gardens and in a tranquil setting out of the main town. Fails to meet the standard you would expect of a 5 star, mainly due to poor service and a few other issues. Often when trying to order a drink for the pool, you had to actively seek out staff who would be clustered together on their phones and not attending to guests. There was also a dirty McDonalds bag left on our floor for over 24 hrs without being removed by cleaners. We got turn down service only 1 out of 3 evenings, giving an inconsistent experience and often the pool area was left covered in used towels, glassware and plates. Also they advertise a free drink and music/ reading at 4pm each day, but this never happened on any day that we were there. Overall a pretty hotel that needs to improve its service to achieve value for the price - this seems to be a consistent topic on other reviews too.
Perfect relaxing stay
We loved our stay at Le Pigonnet. The property is over 100 year old mansion! There were different parts of the hotel that you can stay at each having their own pool. The gardens were out of a story book. It was pure serenity! However our room had some plumbing issues and the view not that great. They accommodated and handled the situation with such grace. We absolutely will come back to stay there!
The gardens are amazing and staff is more than helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was wonderful and the hotel grounds were amazing! Beautiful hotel!
Le Pigonnet is a very pretty hotel, in lovely gardens and a good pool. The common areas are stylishly, if traditionally, decorated. We found the service generally good, although a bit hit and miss at breakfast.
The room however, was the worst we experienced on our trip through Provence staying at 10 different hotels.
Admittedly, it was their entry level room (classic), but I would still expect drawers or shelves for T-shirts, socks and underwear etc. We had to use a chair for these.
The mini bar fridge just contained 2 bottles of water, and was not in a cabinet, just placed at the end of the bed.
The bedside tables were so small as to be useless, just enough space for a drinking glass and nothing else.
I’ve had more charmingly decorated rooms in an Ibis.
As we could see the hotel was full we did not ask to change rooms. It was fine to sleep in, with a comfortable bed, just not somewhere that you would wish to spend any time, which is not what I would expect in a 5 star hotel.
Breakfast was good, though missing some basics - no plain yoghurt for the entire time we were there.
We enjoyed the pool, but would not visit this hotel again, as the risk of a bad room seems too great. Next time we will try Villa Gallici, which although more expensive looks to be a totally different level in terms of design and service.
Overrated Overpriced. Service and attitude. Supposed to be collected at Train Station, nobody arrived, ordered car for a trip to another town. They forgot to order. No water in room. Breakfast awful, had to hunt down a waitress, asked for a Croissant and just got shrug from the lady putting out the food. No glasses to pour water, no plates to put bread etc. Basic basic. And all for $1500 per night!!!!!
The staff was very attentive and helpful
This hotel is wonderful. From the moment you arrive, the attentive team make you feel welcome and relaxed. The hotel and surrounding grounds / gardens are extremely pleasant and the whole experience is amazing. Highly recommended.
Although this hotel looks stunning and the service seems top level. The experience does not match the look or the price tag.
The gardens are stunning and something to see. Having three pools is also exceptional.
But the room was not better the a basic standard room in a mid range city hotel. There was no milk in the fridge or on the coffee tray. 2 pods for coffee they were never refilled. The fridge had two bottles of water and barely cold. The AC did work properly sir the room was warm most of the time. I had informed the front seat and they said they would look at it. They did not.
I asked if they could put some milk in the room and they told me to call rooms service at 6am.
The gym wasn’t open until 7am. Which is quite late. Any hotel generally has 24hr access to a gym or key card access. I will use a gym around 6 before breakfast.
The pool was nice. And the bartender for the pool definitely tried. But I was rather put back when He asked me for a tip. Whilst forgetting half my order.
The thing is. I have paid half the amount for other boutique hotels on this trip and received extremely better service. Drinks on arrival. Well equipped rooms and stunning designs. Nothing about Pigonnet says it should be $500+ euros a night. Let’s face it you pay for the Michelin stared restaurant. So overall you’re paying double for a nice garden. I also let them know it’s was my partner’s birthday holiday after they asked if there was any special requests and they did nothing.
And the phone don’t work in the room on arrival, I had to fix that to. After the turned the room over they didn’t remove any rubbish. Which I thought was very strange.
At the end of the day there is little point paying the high end price for this hotel. You are not getting anything more for your money. The experience does match the tag. Go for boutique hotels that want to leave N impression with you.
Our family stayed in the family suite. It is spacious and provided our family with room to spread out in. The only negative is the hotel is older so there isn’t sufficient lightening in the bedroom. Other than that, it’s great! The property is beautiful with a large garden. There are two swimming pools. There is a lovely restaurant we had dinner in one night and breakfast every morning. There is also a separate bar that serves food and drinks. The staff is extremely kind and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay here.
This is a very expensive hotel for what it offers. Staff lacks understanding and compassion for guests’s needs. I had pre-paid a 3 nights stay and had to leave a day before, as there was a cab strike in Marseille which prevented us from getting our train. I explained the manager that we had to leave one day earlier, as we would have to drive from Aix to Paris to get our plane. He refused to give us a refund from our last day, although acknowledging that we were unable to take the train in Marseilles as planned. Lots of other tourists were left on their own as unlike us they didn’t have a car. I feel the hotel staff should be prepared to deal with such situations and to give refunds to customers like me, who are trapped during these disruptive strikes, which unfortunately are pretty common in France.
Ugliest rooms I have ever seen. No character at all. Bathroom only had a tub and hand shower. I wanted a room with a walk-in shower but they said they were full. They were totally inflexible. When I said I wouldn’t stay there they were going to charge me for the entire stay. I was able to negotiate for half which was crazy.
Le Pigonnet has some outstanding features. The extensive gardens are immaculate and majestic. The reception and tour of the property on arrival was gracious. The location is both quiet and private yet a 15 minute stroll away from the bustle of the Cours Mirabeau.
Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. The breakfast should have been a positive start to the day, but while the quality and variety of food was good, the service undermined the whole experience. On our first morning we waited 15 minutes for coffee, which arrived cold, asked for a hot coffee and waited another 15 minutes, then got up and left, to walk into town for coffee. There were plenty of servers circulating about the dining room but they seemed disorganized and no one had responsibility for a table from start to finish. Another morning we ordered scrambled eggs, watched two other tables receive such eggs, and after a further 15 minute wait, the server we flagged down seemed surprised we hadn’t received our order. The scrambled eggs arrived cold. Similar experiences every day of our stay were an aggravating way to start the day, and the reason why we did not try the restaurant for lunch or dinner.
Housekeeping service was also an area of disappointment. Sheets were not of the quality expected at a luxury hotel. The bed was not properly made up. We try to honor a hotel’s request to use towels more than once to conserve water, but in this hotel the only hooks on which to place a used towel were occupied by the bathrobes, so the choice was to reuse the towel and get the bathrobe wet, or put the towel on the floor to be replaced. Shower gel and shampoo dispensers were not checked and replenished, we had to leave an empty container on the floor of the shower to get it refilled. One morning we returned to our room to find a housekeeper sitting on our bed, relaxing with a coffee.
We have stayed in other five star hotels, Kempinski, Relais & Chateaux etc., and Le Pigonnet isn’t at that standard yet. With the exception of our arrival tour, staff seemed distant and uninterested in our experience of the property, not a “bonjour” from any of them as we went about the hotel. Small things do make a difference when expectations and standards are set high. Le Pigonnet hasn’t yet hit the mark.
What a beautiful property with such thoughtful staff. Will return
The hotel is just outside the main area of Aix-en-Provence making it very peaceful. It is also walled from the road. You feel like you are on a country estate. The grounds are tranquil, beautiful gardens, many fountains, several pools, all but one heated. A large, beautiful dining room and several small rooms for reading and relaxing inside the hotel. .Amazing spa, I had the best facial of my life there with Carla.
We stayed 5 nights at Hotel Le Pigonnet. I wish I could have spent another whole week! This hotel is endlessly charming, with comfortable rooms, enchanting gardens, wonderful Provençal food and drinks (which attract both tourists and locals alike), and a kind and attentive staff. It’s a pleasant 15 minute walk to the Fontaine de la Rotonde where historic Aix begins. We upgraded our room to a king bed with a garden view and were pleasantly surprised with how spacious ours was. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about this hotel. I miss it already!
