Hampton Inn & Suites Hermosa Beach

This was our second time staying at this hotel, and once again everything was excellent. The room was spacious, very clean, and very comfortable. The location was also great, just a 10–15 minute walk from Hermosa Beach. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was also very good. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and everything was perfect

My son had booked a room for himself and me months in advance for Memorial Day weekend. We have stayed at this hotel many times over the past 15 years, so we were very familiar with the property. The reservation was made in my son’s name using his credit card and personal information.

My son arrived before I did and attempted to check in around 3:30 PM. Violet at the front desk initially told him he had to be 18 to check in. He told her that he was 18. She then asked him to wait while she spoke with her supervisor. When she returned, she told him he actually had to be 21.

My son FaceTimed me and explained what was happening. Violet agreed to take the phone and speak with me. I explained that I was approximately 30 minutes away and would be checking into the room and staying there for the duration of the reservation. She again said my son was not old enough to have the room. I told her I was on my way, handed the phone back to my son, and told him, "Don't take off, I'll be there in 30 and then we'll go eat."

When I arrived approximately 30 minutes later, my son was still sitting in the lobby. I went to the front desk to check in, and Violet told me, "Your room is cancelled."

I asked why. Her first explanation was that my son was not 18. I told her he was 18. She then corrected herself and said she meant that he was not 21. I reminded her that I had already told her I was on my way and was there to check in and stay in the room.

She then gave me a third explanation, stating that I had been rude to her over FaceTime and had told her to "go f*** off." I told her that I absolutely did not say that. I explained that what she heard was me telling my son, "Don't take off," because I was on my way to the hotel.

I also explained that we had stayed at this property many times over approximately 15 years and had never experienced a problem. Her response was, "We are under new ownership now."

At that point, she refused to re-book the room and told me the charge would be refunded to my card. She provided a cancellation receipt, which I understood was documentation that the hotel had cancelled the reservation and that the charge would be refunded.

We subsequently went to Hotel Hermosa, where they accommodated us without any issue.

The problem came afterward. When I contacted my credit card company regarding the refund, I was informed that Violet had told them I cancelled the reservation. I disputed the charge, but the hotel again maintained to the credit card company that I had cancelled the reservation. As a result, the hotel kept the money for the non-refundable Memorial Day weekend reservation, despite the fact that I was physically at the hotel attempting to check in and had never requested to cancel the reservation.

The most troubling part of this experience is not simply that the hotel refused to accommodate us. It is that I was given multiple different explanations for why the reservation was cancelled and was then told to my credit card company that I was the one who cancelled it.

After staying at this property for many years, I will not be returning.

Avoid this hotel. We went to Hotel Hermosa instead, and they accommodated us without any problem.

The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful. We ended up wanting to extend our stay one more night. Its location is so conveniently placed by restaurants and the beach. The balcony was so lovey and even being on the 2nd floor we could still still the water from a distance. The breakfast was always delicious and provided such a huge variety of options. Coffee was always fresh and the juice selection was our favorite.

Great location, close to Hermosa Beach. Excellent breakfast and comfortable room. Loved the balcony space.
