It was probably that you couldn’t get a coffee after 8:30pm. It took of been a bit later than that or at reception let you know in advance of the closing time.

This place needs help, it could be so much better. The location is all that’s holding it together.
Pros:

The location was amazing. Great spot.

Cons:

The breakfast buffet was cold, the toast was mouldy. The staff were not overly friendly. The curtains were hanging off their hooks. We got locked out of our room on the 2nd night as the card key did not work, so had to come to reception. Luckily did get fixed quickly.

The lake is lovely.

Cons:

Any five-star review of this resort is, unfortunately, difficult to believe. Based on our experience, this is not a five, four or even three star property by any reasonable standard.

The hotel was extremely dated, unclean, and poorly maintained. Our bathroom was visibly mouldy, the windowsills were filled with bugs, there were insects in our bed and a cockroach in the bath. There was a strong, chemical-like smell throughout the room, almost like paint stripper, that was constant throughout our multiple day stay. The light fittings were rusty and dirty, and the furniture felt worn and uninviting.

We experienced none of the ‘exceptional’ service described in other reviews. While no staff member was overtly rude or anything, the service was minimal and disengaged. At breakfast, we were briefly asked for our room number, but given no explanation of how the buffet worked or where to find plates or cutlery. No one else spoke to us throughout our stay, the reception was constantly empty.

The breakfast itself was frankly awful. We arrived at 9:00am (late for us, but we were jet lagged), with service advertised until 10:00am, so we expected fresh food to still be available. Unfortunately the eggs were congealed, the bacon was like plastic, and the coffee was already cold in the flask when I poured it into the mug. I will always give positive feedback when possible - and I will say, on our last day when we attempted breakfast again at about 8am, the eggs and bacon were fine.

The lake looks lovely, and it’s nice to be near, but just as an overall note - we found ourselves in the centre of Rotorua more often than not, and if we came again, would definitely stay closer to the town, as there’s not much else to do 20 minutes out.

Overall, the experience was just unpleasant. We were so excited to stay here, because the scenery looks gorgeous and we thought it would be so lovely for our long awaited NZ holiday, but unfortunately we couldn’t wait to leave.
