The location and the bed was comfortable
My experience at Captain Morgan's Retreat was extremely disappointing and, quite honestly, unacceptable for a place that markets itself as a major tourist destination.
I was told that due to the Easter weekend they were short staffed. I find that to be a very poor excuse. Holidays are peak season, not a surprise, and any well-managed hotel should be properly prepared.
The issue with my reservation started because I had reported the credit card I originally booked with as lost after I couldn’t find it. As a result, the card declined at check-in. That is understandable. However, I came fully prepared with another valid credit card to pay, which should have easily resolved the situation.
Instead, I was told my reservation had been canceled and that no rooms were available, even though the property appeared nearly empty. I then offered to pay with my other credit card, but that option was completely denied. I was told the only way I could stay was to pay in cash.
As someone with experience working at a Historic Hotels of America property, I found this extremely unprofessional and honestly humiliating. There was no logical reason to refuse a valid credit card.
To add to this, my family member who was also staying at the hotel offered to put the room on her credit card or even rebook the reservation under her name. She only made that offer because she needed cash at the time, and it would have been convenient for both of us. I had not even shared the full situation with her, yet her offer was still refused. Again, cash only was demanded.
On top of paying cash for the room, I was also required to leave a $200 USD cash deposit for pool towels. This felt excessive and unreasonable, and the entire situation gave the impression that they were hoping I would not be able to produce the cash.
At checkout, I was told no receipt was available for my stay. I had to insist on receiving one for business purposes, and only then was I told it would be emailed.
Las cabañas a la orilla del mar unas bellezas 😍
Demasiado Sargazo en toda la orilla de playa
we loved the ocean front Casitas, beautiful view of the ocean. The location is good, its close enough to the town center and far enough away from the busiest part of town. the resort pool was well kept too. If you want a resort thats extremely quiet and relaxing its a great choice.
the beach is NOT swimable whatsoever, the pictures and description of the beach are not as advertised.
the resort restaurant customer service is poor and slow, the food was ok, we always went into town to eat.The resort is also under ALOT of renos which isn't mentioned in the resort description, or reflective in the price. 3 mornings we woke up too hammering and heavy equipment being brought in.
The Property is very clean and convient to San Pedro and Secret Beach
Breakfast Options are limited
Great view , great staff clean & friendly
Cute little bungalows right on the beach. If the beach were usable, it would have been a nice location.
I guess we just visited the wrong time of year, but the beach was basically unusable - the water was completely full of sargasso (seaweed) and high winds were blowing all day. We tried to take a snorkelling tour, but that got canceled due to the wind also. Secret Beach was nice but it's on the other side of the island and the road to get there is awful.
Incredible
The location is awesome. About 15-20 minutes away from the golf cart grid lock of San Pedro. About 5 minutes from the Truck Stop, and 20 minutes from Secret Beach. We should have gotten a cart for the duration of our stay. The property is in the midst of renovation. The staff is awesome. On the other hand, this is the first hotel in Belize where you have to buy, yes buy, your water. The room did not have a microwave. But Greg, who runs the restaurant will gladly reheat food for you.
There’s no hot tub there, which is why I booked it. But great atmosphere and close to the night life. Rooms will make you feel like you are on a ship (dark). Beautiful beach and the cabana porch is awesome! Staff are incredible.
I would definitely stay here again.
We had a great stay. The staff was incredibly accommodating. Even waited for us the night we arrived to not close the kitchen and have dinner since during the week there are minimal dining options after 8pm. Overall, great experience. Food and Spa was great too.
Friendly staff.
We loved our cabana! It was right on the ocean, authentic, clean, and had lots of room for the two of us. We loved the location, it close but not too close to the heart of the city so we had lots of things to do that were close but did not have to deal with the busy downtown. The only things we did not love were the beds (we found it hard) and the cost of the drinks and food at the resort. It was more expensive so we left all the time to eat and drink. One thing to be aware of in general is that no restaurants or coffee shops open unitl 8am so if you are an early riser ensure you have snacks and coffee in your room!
Our air conditioner leaked for two days before we realized because it was going into my travel purse so we didn’t hear it. They fixed that. I also told them that our tv didn’t work because it needed an antenna cable. I was told that our room didn’t have one. Normally when we vacation we don’t watch tv but when it rained for two days we needed it. My husband lost a room key on the dock. I told the office right away. They said it was ok. One employee can ruin the whole trip. Fortunately for us it was the last morning. He charged me $25 for the room key and never compensated for the ruined bag and no tv. I asked for a manager and he said first he wasn’t there. Then by the time I got done talking and asked when the manager will be there. He told me they didn’t have one. I just paid it and learned to never go back
