I arrived in a Thai beach town late one night, exhausted from weeks of writing, shooting, magazine deadlines hanging over me like a noose. When I stepped into Smile’s lovely spacious room, I was tired and grouchy, complaining there was no window. The elegant woman, Smile’s owner, looked at me as the magician looks at all living beings created by magic. Then, just like that, she flung open a nearby door, opening my line of vision to a sudden row of seaside pastel-colored houses and buildings. Poof! Like magic! If there had been a Camaro parked below, I might have sworn I’d shot back in time to Redondo Beach, in Southern California. My hostess talent’s for shifting the traveler’s perspectives, to open your line of vision, to enlighten you with a new vista, is real. An amazing shellfish dinner she brewed one night made the moon jealous

When you think of surfing, Thailand’s not the 1st place popping to mind, but clear waters, the northeast monsoon, soft swells make beaches like nearby Mae Ram Phueng a fine place to launch your surfing safari. There’s a fancy patisserie shop nearby with friendly prices near smile too. For those of us with more relaxed vices, there’s a cannabis store nearby, too, managed by local teenagers u’ll mistake for affable, goofy stars in a Gonzo, 70s hit series.

If you like the way surfers move across waves, dropping, climbing, shaping their bodies to water, if you’re on a spiritual journey with a lot of sea, sand, and sky, the Smile Guest House is the place for you.

Worthy of every penny—clean, cozy, and conveniently located
Pros:

We arrived in Bangkok late at night and had initially planned to head to Koh Samet. However, since the port closes at 7 PM, we decided to stay at Smile Guesthouse for the night. I’m so glad we did!

The location is fantastic, conveniently situated near the port FOR KOH SAMED and (near 7-11).

The staff was incredibly accommodating; she even waited for us until 2 AM upon our arrival!

The hostel was impressively clean, especially considering the affordable price. It provided a relaxing atmosphere for my family and me after a long day of travel. The comfortable accommodations made our brief stay enjoyable, allowing us to recharge before continuing our journey.

Overall, I highly recommend Smile Guesthouse to anyone looking for a clean, budget-friendly place to stay in Bangkok. It exceeded my expectations and gave us the relaxation we needed. I would stay here again!
