Good but not outstanding
Pros:

Location/outer grounds was lovely. Food was great although a little expensive. One particular member of staff was a breath of fresh air, very funny and helpful in multiple parts of the hotel not just her main department. So that made the visit memorable, thanks Tino! (Hope I got the name right)

Cons:

Some of the staff seemed a little flustered/lack of care. Not a huge issue but shame when others are going above and beyond. The rooms were a bit run down compared to the common areas, location and grounds.

Happy with the short stay, top rated staff at the hotel!
Pros:

The hotel matched both the description and our expectations, so we were very happy with our stay.

Yes, the hotel is a little dated, but that's part of its charm. It has its own character, and at times it felt like we were staying at Speke Hall.

The beds were very comfortable, and our request for a quiet room was accommodated perfectly. We both slept like babies. The shower and bathroom were absolutely fine, and everything was clean and well maintained.

A special mention goes to the staff, who were brilliant throughout our stay. They answered all our questions and really went the extra mile at breakfast. As we had to leave very early for my son's karting competition, a member of staff kindly offered to prepare some warm toast for my son (despite kitchen wasn't fully running yet). While we were packing up our gear, she also made me a bacon and sausage sandwich, carefully wrapped it to take away, and made sure I wouldn't go hungry later. That thoughtful gesture was truly appreciated so thank you very much!

The gardens around the hotel were lovely, and the location suited our needs perfectly.

If my son is racing in the area again next year, we'd be very happy to stay here again.

Cons:

The corridors leading to our room felt a little creepy and could do with some updating to better match the hotel's character and atmosphere.

A charming hotel with beautiful grounds, wonderful staff, excellent food, and welcoming atmosphere
Pros:

We really enjoyed our second stay here and would happily return. The hotel is full of character, with beautiful grounds, lovely gardens and a charming interior that gives it a unique atmosphere.
Our room was comfortable, the bed was great, and we had everything we needed for our stay. The food was absolutely delicious, and every member of staff we met was warm, friendly and incredibly helpful, making us feel very welcome throughout our stay.

Cons:

The hotel could benefit from a little TLC in places, but this didn't detract from our overall experience. If you appreciate historic buildings, peaceful surroundings and excellent hospitality, this is a lovely place to stay.

Victorian hotel past its best with a whiff of Fawlty Towers!
Pros:

Comfortable bed.

Cons:

Cold shower. Burnt eggs at breakfast. Understaffed and undertrained staff. Tiny evening meal, 45 mins late and massively overpriced.

I chose the hotel for its location as on the outskirts of Cleator/Cleator Moor as my family were originally from the
Pros:

It is a lovely period property in a great setting & the staff were very friendly & helpful - there was a nice bar & a couple of seating areas - the dining room was very pleasant & food pretty good

Cons:

It is badly in need of renovation/restoration - so much more could be done to make the gardens more accessible - although it was an ok price I felt that breakfast should have been included & also carried on a little later - as we were on a break we didn’t want to get up particularly early so didn’t bother with breakfast

A hotel with huge potential in a fantastic location, but it needs investment.
Pros:

The night porter was exceptional. He was friendly, professional and incredibly helpful throughout our stay. He is a real asset to the hotel and deserves recognition for the standard of customer service he provides.

The check-in and overnight service from the night porter was excellent. The size of the rooms and the potential of the property also stood out.

Cons:

Some of the younger daytime staff appeared disengaged. One member of staff was sitting behind reception scrolling on their phone and when we asked for towels, simply replied, "I don't know where they are," without offering to help further. The condition of the rooms also let the hotel down.

The hotel would benefit from investment in refurbishment, particularly addressing the damp and mould issues. Staff training on customer service would also make a significant difference, ensuring guests receive proactive help rather than feeling like they're an inconvenience.

Staff very good & food was nice but the building & rooms are not up to a decent standard of accommodation.
Pros:

The staff were very good 👍

Cons:

The room needs a complete make over the corners where the radiators are the floor was filthy. The bathroom was disgusting & needs a complete make over. The toilet was wobbly & the sink tap dripped all night. The taps Need turning for ever before the water comes out !
The whole place needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it up to a satisfactory standard.

Other than the shower
Pros:

It’s a lovely place, very ornate and clean. I’m sure keeping this old house in good repair can’t be easy or inexpensive.

The bed was very comfortable.

Cons:

I couldn’t get the water hot enough in the shower to wash my hair. I took a very quick shower of my body, but wanted to be more thorough. There’s no hot water in the sink either.

On check in, it was clear that the woman had more important things to do than bother with me.
