Room was clean and staff was attentive
Very beautiful and comfortable. Quite and relaxing, close to the Dana Point harbor for a nice walk. Breakfast was very good and the staff was great! We will definitely return for another stay.
The fan in restroom was loud.
Great location and clean
It feels like an retirement/elderly home. The staff is great but the hotel needs a revamp - without losing its charm.
The location is really the best. It’s in walking distance to the harbor, the small “downtown” area with access to restaurants, and the local hiking trails. The beaches are also close and they are really beautiful. I also really enjoyed all the amenities of the room itself — the slippers, robe, toiletries from Grown Alchemist, a steamer instead of an iron, the high quality towels. The bathroom is spacious with a wonderful hot tub. The room itself even has a fireplace and the seating was comfortable. I really appreciated that the room was genuinely very clean. The breakfast each morning is excellent with great variety, and always impressively crispy bacon. The early evening wine, crackers, cheese, and bites were so great! On check-out day, the staff was so accommodating as I wanted to finish some more work there after check-out — I had the library and dining room to be able to get my work done and afterwards, they were more than helpful in storing my luggage and offering suggestions for where I can go on a beautiful walk.
I do wish the tea selection was available in the room itself, but it doesn’t overall take much effort to just head down to the main lobby for tea and water (usually infused with fruit). I did pay for a room with a balcony view of the water, so it is costly —- it was right next to the little public “square”/gazebo area and so you can hear all the conversations happening as many people stop by the area on their walk or in touring the region. It’s a great view and luckily, people aren’t usually in that area once it gets dark. I did stay in the middle of the week so I loved that it was overall quieter, but I can imagine it being rather noisy on busy days with a lot of guests.
We were there for several days over Easter. We had a great experience, the views were terrific and if we are back in the area it will be a priority to stay there again.
I can't recommend the Blue Lantern Inn high enough! My daughter and I stayed here for two nights as we were exploring the area and from the moment we walked in, our expectations were exceeded in every way! I'll start with the property. The views are outstanding! And there is a little courtyard in the front with comfortable chairs overlooking the harbor and the coastal drive. To the left, you can view down the coast and into the area where the boats make their homes. There are restaurants and cute stores within walking distance and free parking in a great lot right outside. The fountain and deck area offer a peaceful setting for taking in the scenery or doing work on your laptop (as I did!). The interior is charming, clean, perfectly set up for a relaxing morning over breakfast or evening in the library with a glass of wine. Our room was immaculate - spacious and full of great amenities. The bathroom was a room in itself which I appreciated with a teenage daughter! The staff was wonderful - always providing helpful tips on the area and even offering to get me an extension cord for my laptop! The free breakfast is also very good - not like your typical hotel breakfast, but made with care and attention. I can't wait to come back and bring my husband and son! Thank you Blue Lantern Inn for ensuring a special two days!
Breakfast had a good selection and it was nice to eat with a view of the ocean. Hotel is very clean and the view is spectacular. Staff is very courteous, friendly and helpful.
The only positive part of our experience was Catalina at the front desk. Prior to arrival, she was helpful, responsive, and ensured my wife could check in early if needed. She also communicated clearly and made the check-in process smooth.
Unfortunately, the overall experience did not match the price point or expectations of this property.
We stayed for a special occasion—my wife’s birthday—and paid nearly $700 for one night. Our room had a very loud, disruptive hydraulic-type noise occurring every 20–25 minutes throughout the night. It was frequent enough to make it difficult to rest.
When we brought this to the attention of the evening front desk staff member (Kathleen), her response was dismissive and unhelpful. She stated that there was nothing she could do until she reported it to maintenance the next day, added that she is “a heavy sleeper so it wouldn’t bother her,” and suggested that if it got too bad, we could “try sleeping in the bathtub.” This response was inappropriate and far below any reasonable standard of hospitality.
In addition, while it was communicated that we were celebrating a birthday, there was no meaningful acknowledgment. Two pieces of chocolate were left in the room without a card or note, making it unclear whether it was intentional or standard for all guests. Meanwhile, visible hospitality gestures (such as champagne service) appeared to be extended to other guests but were not offered to us.
The overall tone of the interaction felt noticeably different from how other couples were being treated, and it left us uncomfortable. We raised our concerns again with the front desk staff (Leslie) the following morning and were told a manager would follow up, but we have not received any communication since.
For a hotel at this price point, the level of service, responsiveness, and overall guest experience was disappointing.
Location
The light switch design doesn’t make sense
Truly a first class experience. Great location. Wonderful ). Friendly staff - who go above and beyond to make the guests feel welcome and comfortable.
The rooms are wonderful- especially the views of Dana Point and the Harbor.
Great variety of excellent food and beverages (breakfast included as well as evening wine and and healthy food choices).
A 5 star experience !
The room was spacious and a wonderful view from our balcony
The giant bathtub there was mold in the cracks all around it. Not good needs maintenance
I had the luxury tower guest room which was clean and magnificent. We enjoyed our deck overlooking the water and the staff was friendly and welcoming. The sheets were top quality as well as the bed was very comfortable. The jetted tub was large but okay. They have a breakfast in the morning which is nice but average. Overall experience was a 10 and we will return.
It was outstanding in every way!
This harbor front property offers beautiful views. It is located at the end of a very quiet street. The inn has an old world feel but the rooms are modern & had a window that actually opened which had a view of the harbor & a nice breeze. We were surprised to learn that the inn offers free wine & snacks every afternoon. This alone saved us quite a bit of money as the restaurants in the area are on the upscale side. We walked to Lantern Village which is a small downtown area with coffee shops & restaurants. As a San Diego native, somehow I have never been to Dana Point. However, after staying at Blue Lantern inn, I am now making it my life goal to be able to move to this area someday. For now, we will settle with coming back to the blue lantern inn.
Let's start with the good stuff. I enjoyed my stay at the Blue Lantern Inn. The evening cheese and wine service was genuinely impressive which added to the charm. Breakfast followed the same pattern: one standout signature dish that really hit the mark, but the rest being simple and familiar so just expect one.
...and then the bad stuff. I did run into some gross hiccups, a stain on the bedsheets and an eyelash on the pillowcase (see pics.) Not exactly what you hope to find when you first settle in at these high luxury prices. But the front desk handled it quickly and professionally, and housekeeping replaced everything right away.
Despite that issue, the inn has a unique atmosphere and a lot of heart.
