We stayed at the Axel Hotel San Sebastián and, overall, it’s a nice, modern hotel in a good location. However, there are a few things you may want to know before booking.
Firstly, the hotel isn’t exactly advertised as a rainbow hotel, but let’s just say it doesn’t take long after arriving to realise there may be a rainbow somewhere nearby. 🌈 Absolutely no issue whatsoever — it just amused us that it seemed considerably more obvious in person than it did when booking.
Then there’s the “self-parking available.”
Technically, yes.
In the same way that technically there are enough lifeboats if only 20% of the Titanic turns up.
A member of staff told us the hotel has around 20 parking spaces for 99 rooms. So unless you arrive early, are exceptionally lucky, or have previously won the Spanish National Lottery, there’s a decent chance your car will be enjoying its own separate holiday in an underground car park about a 10-minute walk away.
But my favourite feature has to be the advertised “soundproof rooms.”
I can confirm that the room was successfully soundproof against absolutely nothing happening in the room above us.
For approximately 90 minutes, the two ladies upstairs appeared to be having a considerably better evening than we were. There were bumps. There were bangs. There were various other noises. And judging by the enthusiastic soundtrack coming through the ceiling, customer satisfaction upstairs was considerably higher than average.
At one point I considered phoning reception, but frankly after that level of commitment it seemed rude to interrupt.
So, in summary:
Nice hotel.
Friendly staff.
Good location.
Parking availability should probably come with an asterisk the size of Spain.
Soundproofing appears to be more of an aspiration than an engineering specification.
Would I stay again?
Possibly.
But next time I’ll arrive without a car and request a room on the top floor. 🌈😂
Lovely hotel, very helpful staff. We were upgraded to a junior suite which was great. Lovely pool area to relax in and very good breakfasts.

Good location for the railway station.
No bed backboard. Shower was difficult to maintain a constant temperature. Odd room layout. Poor outlook to a block of flats and grubby courtyard. Minibar stuffed too much. No cosmetic tissues provided although bizarrely, a box of two condoms provided as a welcome gift. Not particularly good value for money.
Lovely hotel with clean spa and pool facilities. Staff were great!
Slight lack of storage for clothes and that. Bit like jenga with the ironing board and bits.

We extended one night extra and was told the price included breakfast. It was an upgrade from our previous room as we had to swap rooms since the reception made a mistake? (Unsure)
But we woke up the last morning to find out that the breakfast wasn’t included in our previously quoted price at the reception. If we had known that, we would not of extended our stay for that price. Quite disappointing end to the stay to be misled but, I understand it wasn’t intentional. Annoying nonetheless as we had to rush to leave for our bus home, without breakfast
Très bel hôtel. Très bien situé. On peut partir visiter la ville à pied. Le personnel est très gentil et au service des clients. Le quartier est très calme, pas de bruits la nuit.
