I was looking for long to visit Yogyakarta, I am a big travel and did in Indonesia more than 50 trips, more or less long.
I am Accor + member and a big fan of M gallery hotels and Handwritten collection ones. I feel they have all a special character. La Coupole in Sapa and Hotels des Arts in Saigon, both in Vietnam are really jewels in hotel business.
I was finding Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta on Accor website. I was making reservation for two nights, first in a premium room and a cancelled for a suite, even if the price was higher because I was very exited to stay there.
The old hotel is very nice, charming style, and the suite was well maintained, I think recently renovated. The staff was perfect, Indonesian kindness and way of service. The food in the restaurant was extremely nice, we ate there most of the time, and a big effort is done for breakfast which usually is not an Indonesian specialty.
But, the swimming pool was a lot smaller than expected, and probably because of the situation in the middle of the buildings, very noisy. I love swimming and I was there once for 30 minutes only.
The suite is space and comfortable, but the bathroom is not at the level expected in this type of hotel, maybe the « Mandi » traditional.
I was planning to stay longer, but we were very happy to escape after two nights for paradise in Plataran Borobodur.
An incident was also happening during our stay and leave me a bitter taste. I am used to take coffee from machine every morning. I am equipped in France and in Beijing where I work. In each hotel, I get one also from different brands. In that suite, it was an old machine that, even French from Malongo brand, I never seen, probably made before I was born. The new ones on the Malongo website look very different now. No manual for using it. I succeeded to make a first one, but on second attempt a plastic knob broke in my hand. I informed the reception immediately. They told me that it’s the third time this was happening and unfortunately, I have to pay for the machine. More than 150 € for a machine that was over aged and my money will help to buy a new machine. I found that attitude very bad, not at the level of 4 stars hotel from Accor group. I am responsible of what I can break, but any insurance will pay for the price of used machine.
My overall thinking is very negative about the management of that hotel, and I don’t recommend to stay there based on my traveler experience.
We had an absolutely fantastic stay at The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta! The hotel’s historic charm, elegant colonial architecture, and serene atmosphere made it a perfect base for exploring the city. Every detail from the beautifully maintained rooms to the peaceful pool area reflected the hotel’s commitment to quality and comfort.
A special mention must go to Dina at the Paprika Restaurant, who truly made our stay unforgettable. Her warm smile, genuine kindness, and impeccable service turned every meal into a wonderful experience. Dina went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, offering great recommendations and ensuring everything was perfect. She embodies the spirit of Indonesian hospitality at its best.
We left The Phoenix Hotel feeling completely relaxed and grateful for such an exceptional experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Yogyakarta and don’t miss breakfast or dinner at Paprika Restaurant!
Booked two nights, paid in full, hoping for a relaxing stay with family. The hotel looks traditional online, but the hygiene was disappointing. The room had a strong smell, and the overall feel was uncomfortable. After an hour, I felt nauseous and on the verge of a hives outbreak,so we left immediately. I discussed with the hotel, offered to pay for one night, and asked for a refund for the second. They refused. I’m not writing this to complain, but to offer a true experience. If you have allergies or sensitive health, be cautious.
The room is comfortable with a nice balcony.
Pool is great and interesting information in and on the hotel throughout. A/C ok , internet fine.
Helpful staff to arrange tours etc.
Un walkable city, traffic terrible.
Set in a historic and cultural building this hotel oozes with heritage and style. Our room was pleasantly decorated albeit a little small, we had a small balcony which was most welcome. We had all the amenities you would expect plus slippers, a Bible and a Quran. Breakfast, a varied selection for all tastes was in a delightful open courtyard with a fountain and a musician playing traditional music. It also has a restaurant in the evening where we had excellent dinner, nicely presented and cooked to perfection.
Every nook and cranny a tribute to the history and artwork of this hotel. Ask for the 1/2 hour hotel tour offered, quite interesting. Fantastic breakfast. Good dinner at the restaurant, if not a little pricy. Staff, like all over Indonesia, such beautiful people. Will stay here again and again.
We received incredible service from the moment we arrived. The hotel arranged a private tour for us to visit the historic sites, which was such a thoughtful touch. What made it even more special was learning that this hotel itself is a piece of Indonesian history - actually staying here felt like being part of the country's independence story.
Huge thanks to Mr. Eko for his warm welcome and hospitality to our family. Also want to give a shoutout to Arin, Githa, and Ardan for their outstanding service throughout our stay. The whole team really went above and beyond to make our visit memorable.
Highly recommend this place if you want to experience Yogyakarta's history while enjoying excellent service!
Wow, this place is absolutely fabulous. The location is great, in terms of access to the old town and for visits in the local area. The rooms are lovely, really clean with a big comfortable bed. The staff are excellent, particularly the front desk, Dina in the restaurant, and Riska the trainee in the bar (who made the BEST pins coladas). We loved the pool area and the breakfast was outstanding, one of the best we’ve had, with a mixture of western and local options. We will certainly return to this hotel.
We stayed here for 4 nights and the whole experience was just wonderful! We were up on the 3rd floor overlooking the gorgeous pool. The staff were so polite and so friendly and helpful. Our room was quite luxurious and bathroom was great with good water pressure, temperature. Breakfast was just excellent with so many varieties of food to choose from. We had dinners in the hotel always choosing Indonesian fare. These were so tasty and spicy
The hotel is wonderful Dutch colonial with hints of Javanese furniture and additions.
Just glorious and feeling very special
Disappointed with our stay. The hotel's pool is under maintenance (no notice or discount), and they charged us a fee to shift our dates by a day, even with advance notice. For the price point, I might suggest another stay in Yogyakarta.
A lovely heritage hotel with very helpful and friendly staff, excellent dining and a good bar
The Hotel and communal area are beautiful and the service was good. All the employees are very friendly.
What we didn't like was our room, the room, the furniture and the washroom really need an update.
The breakfast buffet was good. A la cart menu was just Ok. We ordered a pan fried fish, snapper, and it wasn't good at all.
Totally amazing stay at the Phoenix. The most beautiful hotel, the loveliest staff, incredible food and service. The decor of the hotel is outstanding, there is a pool and very helpful travel service to organise tours to the many different attractions around the region. I would recommend to everyone and everyone visiting the amazing city of Yogyakarta.
We recently stayed at The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta, and it was a wonderful experience. The hotel is full of charm, blending colonial architecture with traditional Javanese character.
Special mention to Bagus, who warmly greeted us on arrival and took great care in handling our luggage.
The room was beautifully decorated and breakfast was excellent, offering both delicious local delights with soothing sounds of live gamelan being played throughout. The sweet treats in particular like dadar gulung was a personal favourite of mine, perfect with kopi!
I also loved spending time by the pool, a peaceful spot to relax after exploring the city.
During dinner, Dewi served us with a cheerful smile and ensured our experience was flawless. Again, live gamelan was played during a portion of the evening.
The hotel’s location near Malioboro Street is ideal for sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying the vibrant culture of Yogyakarta.

Lot of hugs from Bologna, Italy
Very charming hotel in Yogyakarta with a very good restaurant ! Our experience here was great. I want to highlight especially the service provided by Verlin and Yasminne, who made our experience there a truly unforgettable one !
Phoenix is a pleasure for the eye, its heritage style and the furniture are really something to behold. The room is sufficiently spacious, while the bathroom needs a couple of minor improvements, like having an hook where to hang the bathrobe near the shower. Food quality is something to be improved, while breakfast is really a good one.
The staff is the best asset of the hotel, the team is always very nice in any circumstance. A special mention for Dina and Tira !!!
The Service from Varel war very good.
The Restaurant is very good Place and Beautiful, and good stafff, the Food is good‘
