Mice, Major Construction, Closed Hot Tub, and a Frustrating Refund Experience

I booked the AmericInn in Charlevoix for my son's marathon weekend beginning June 19 and paid approximately $729. I specifically chose this hotel because it advertised a pool and hot tub, as I wanted my son to be able to use the hot tub after running his marathon.

Unfortunately, the stay was extremely disappointing. There were mice at the property, and the pool area was affected by significant construction—including a wall that was missing. The hot tub we had specifically booked the hotel to use was closed.

Because of these conditions, I checked out a day early. Before leaving, I spoke directly with hotel staff about a refund. I was told that they would refund the money as soon as Expedia contacted them.

What happened next was particularly frustrating. While I was still at the hotel, I heard the front desk phone ring shortly after the manager had stepped away. Almost immediately afterward, I received an email from Expedia saying they had attempted to contact the hotel but were unable to reach anyone, and therefore I would not receive a refund.

Considering the amount I paid, the conditions at the property, and the fact that hotel staff had told me they were willing to issue the refund once Expedia contacted them, I do not consider a single unsuccessful phone call to be a reasonable effort to resolve the situation.

I understand that hotels occasionally undergo construction and amenities sometimes become unavailable. However, guests paying this much should be clearly informed before arrival when major construction affects the property and advertised amenities are unavailable. The presence of mice made the situation considerably more concerning.

I ultimately left a day early and would not have booked this property had I known these conditions existed. I hope both AmericInn and Expedia improve how they communicate significant property conditions and handle legitimate guest complaints and refund requests.

I liked the breakfast and the accommodation for the broken lock on my door

I go to Wyndham hotels because they are usually high quality. This hotel is not high quality. It was clean, but poorly maintained. The air conditioning unit was very loud and not very effective. It would turn down during the night and it would get hot. Spiders in the room. Breakfast area was small and few choices. I wouldn’t go back.

It is a nice cozy hotel with a quiet and nice atmosphere. The food is what you expect but its also not terrible. Not to far from Charlevoix either. The first time I stayed here the room I had was definitely not that well but the room I had was way better then before. The room is clean and the staff are nice. I think this is a good hotel that you can stay at for a few nights near the city.

Nice large clean room. Fireplace is a nice touch and would be especially nice in the winter. Breakfast is a little on the low side of hotel standard breakfasts. Elevators would be nice. Staff was very nice and friendly. Bed was adequate but I did wake up with a backache. Driving in here you have to exit into a church lot which was a bit confusing.

I'm writing this review to let anyone looking to book in this area how amazing the customer service is at this location. I booked a stay through Expedia for a wedding but needed to change locations and Expedia made my experience trying to cancel a nightmare (DO NOT USE EXPEDIA). Kate, who is an assistant manager at the property, worked with me over 3 days to help me get a refund from Expedia when she didn't have to. She was so understanding of my situation where Expedia wouldn't ever let me speak to an actual person no matter what options I selected. She personally wrote me an email detailing the situation and approval on their side to cancel and refund my stay and I was finally able to get a refund through Expedia thanks to her help. Although I didn't stay at their location I will absolutely keep them in mind in the future thanks to the grace I was treated with by their staff. I could not recommend them more. Thank you Kate for everything you do, you are a kind and amazing person!

It was a clean room and good night's sleep when we had to quickly adjust our hotel plans in Charlevoix. Front desk was friendly and helpful when checking in and with breakfast. Lack of workout room was a challenge. Indoor pool and hot tub were there but did not give feeling of clean level we would check out. We were close to town and other friends in the area. We used Wyndham Rewards points for both nights, so definitely a value stay for us. Would stay here again for lower cost stay.

I liked that it was located outside of the city of Charlevoix, which created a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.

The carpet in the hallway was brand new on the first floor. The shower was the best thing in the room.
