Location
Dreadful restaurant. Poor service. There is not enough personnel. The restaurant food is dreadful … which is a real disgrace in Italy. Even a plate of simple pasta with tomato sauce is beyond the capacities of the kitchen.
The Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco is undeniably beautiful. The scenery alone is breathtaking, and it's easy to understand why it was chosen as a wedding venue. Unfortunately, the experience beyond the landscape left much to be desired, and I feel compelled to share an honest account for future guests. For context, we are Marriott Gold status.
We attended a wedding here and stayed for three nights. During our visit, the hotel appeared to be hosting not only the large wedding party but multiple overlapping conferences simultaneously. Whether this was a contributing factor or not, the strain on service was evident throughout.
Housekeeping was our most persistent frustration. Despite making a deliberate effort to keep our room tidy and accessible, housekeeping never fully serviced our room on any of the three days we stayed. The bed was made and towels were replaced, but that was the extent of it. Amenities were not restocked, used dishes were left untouched, and the room/bathroom were never properly cleaned or reset. I personally visited the front desk on two consecutive days to raise this concern. Both attendants were assured me the issue would be addressed. It never was. On the second occasion, the response amounted to little more than an offer to call housekeeping again (this, the evening before checkout). The suggestion, delivered somewhat dismissively, was impractical and reflected a broader pattern of lip service over resolution. I was genuinely stunned at the lack of care and attention, as I had experienced only great service from other hotels in Italy.
The food was equally disappointing. We had come directly from extended stays in Milan (Park Hyatt) and Lake Como (Hilton Lake Como), where both the cuisine and hospitality were outstanding. We genuinely hoped to end our Italy trip on an even higher note. Instead, the dining experience here was easily the weakest of our entire vacation; not simply by comparison, but in its own right. For a resort of this caliber and price point, the quality fell exceedingly short of expectations.
To be fair, the majority of staff carried themselves with warmth and a friendly demeanor, and that does not go unnoticed. But friendliness without follow-through only goes so far.
It is clear that this property has a great deal of potential. The setting is genuinely spectacular. But a beautiful view cannot substitute for the fundamentals of hospitality. When a hotel and more importantly, its guests, invest significantly in an experience, the expectation is not perfection, but attentiveness and care. On this visit, that standard was not met. I sincerely hope management takes guest feedback seriously, because this resort deserves better than coasting on its scenery.
Exceptional location, staff and amenities. Everything was beautiful. Breakfast was unbelievable.
Nothing
I just want to thank the staff at the restaurant especially Mohamed Ali, Davide, Jocelyn, Mihaela. They were very friendly and accommodating all our questions and special dietary requests. Also, they were very fun! Can’t thank them enough.
Posto incantevole con piscina sia esterna sia interna, con piccola spa e palestra
La spa è davvero troppo piccola rispetto alla capienza della struttura
Outstanding! We didn't want to leave.
The hotel is perched nicely above the small village of Barga and offers wonderful views of the local countryside below.
I was impressed with our room (303); well-appointed, ample space and a balcony to enjoy a glass of Tuscan Red while enjoying the above-mentioned views.
I always believe that good views, good location and good character are important in a quality hotel although what really makes an elite hotel is the hotel team. This team is 5*+. Everyone we came in contact with were friendly, professional and what we liked most - they showed their individual personalities. We were very impressed overall and thank them for their warm hospitality.
Looking for the perfect place? You just found it.
Might be one the most incredible places in Tuscany from an intimate, scenery and Italian luxury point of view. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking valley plus many great activities in Barga nearby.
The location is extremely beautiful, with vast panoramic views, at the time of our visit early May 2026, distant snow topped ranges were visible. A €20 taxis ride to Barga, sees you at the local station for trip to Pisa and Lucca around 45mins away. For a few euros rather than €100 for a taxi and you get to see more countryside. We booked an accessible room as I use a wheelchair, unfortunately on one day the service lift was broken and the smaller lift are tiny. Had to fold my chair ( then only just big enough.) The room is adequate with small folding screen cubicle in shower. It's supposed to be four and a half star rating, I personally think that's stretching it. I think the staff make up most of those awarded. The reception staff are without question exceptional, as are the waiting and porter staff, John in particular. For a nearly 5 star rating, parts are worn and tired. Backs of dining chairs are rubbed and scuffed, cutlery is very worn, at breakfast on a few days there were no china cups but paper cups only, cutlery wasn't sharp, you couldn't cut a peach at breakfast, we had half board the food was OK but lacked vegetables. It's a Marriot hotel, and one of the American bosses was there at the time of our visit, they were polishing coal as they used to say. But it is tired. Worth the money? Beware all the extras. Would I stay again, I don't think so. We were only on a short break (4 days)
Udsigten og deres aften servering var gode kvalitets retter med god smag
Deres spa var ikke vedligeholdt og meget dårlig kvalitet
Beautiful location at the top of a hill. Breathtaking views!
High prices at the restaurant.
First the Positive :
Great location
Good modern rooms with excellent views
Clean
Negative:
Service
Check in at 17.15 staff recommend to book in hotel restaurant (20 mins from nearest restaurant) Book 30 mins later for 21.00 and told all is full despite hotel is far from full but due to non hotel bookings.
Why do we book a remote hotel with restaurant to drive 45 mins to have Dinner ???
Zero will to accommodate dinner for ONE person!
Check out time at 10 AM !! Better not sleep in while on holiday as you will be kicked out of bed!!
Does not comply with 3 star conditions: No fridge in room but in public entry, No room phone, No desk
Bathroom window straight to exterior passage with no curtain or frosted glass so nice sharing.
IN SHORT NICE FACILITIES BUT WHAT IS THAT WORTH IF YOU CANT HAVE DINNER BUT LOTS OF POOR SERVICE.
