Pros:

Be Cautious When Using Vendors Located on Hotel Property
Pros:

I enjoyed many aspects of my stay at the Fort Young Hotel; however, I feel compelled to share a concern regarding a business operating on the hotel property.

During my stay, I purchased a gold bracelet from the jewelry store located within the hotel. As a visitor to Dominica, I felt comfortable making the purchase because the store’s location on the hotel property gave the impression that it was a trusted and reputable business associated with the hotel experience.

Unfortunately, the bracelet broke within a month of purchase. After returning the item to the jewelry store for repair and receiving a receipt confirming that the store had taken possession of it, I was unable to obtain updates regarding the repair despite the store having my contact information. The matter has since escalated into a dispute concerning the return of the bracelet.

While I understand that the jewelry store may operate independently from the hotel, I believe guests should be aware that businesses located on the property may not be owned or managed by the hotel. I would encourage the hotel to carefully review the businesses it hosts and to assist guests when serious customer service issues arise with vendors operating on its premises.

I hope the hotel considers this feedback, as its reputation influenced my decision to patronize the jewelry store in the first place.

Great all inclusive dive resort
Pros:

We were greeted by the shuttle service to pick up 28 divers with all their gear. Upon arrival we found all our luggage already placed into rooms. The rooms very spacious overlooking the ocean from our great patio. Our packaged included all meals and some additional tours which were awesome. Our meals were all buffet style with atte tive service from staff once seated. Buffet always well stocked and clean. Dive operations were superb with very knowledgeable, enthusiastic dive guides in the water with us. Anxious to return.

Good with minor room for improvement
Pros:

The sea view room is amazing. I rate it 10/10. You get to take in breath taking sunsets in the evenings.

Cons:

One day, we went just before breakfast closed, and the staff was busy and not attentive to us. Given that we were still within the 10:00am deadline, we felt as though we should still have been given full attention. No one to offer us water as they would when you go earlier. Another morning, they kept passing our table while I was trying to get coffee refills.

Nice stay, great dive shop!
Pros:

First time in Dominica, came for a dive trip, 3 couples, 2 couples were divers and one couple was not. DIVE: dive shop was awesome, we had a fabulous dive master Brad, and crew, Jeff, Dante, and Captain. We were off every morning on time, even the first day! The diving was great, very calm waters, 50 to 70 feet, and built in safety stop at the end of most of the dives. Would definitely say the diver operation is top-notch HOTEL: we had a room in the older part, right on the water, steps away from restaurant and dive shop, loved it. Small deck with 2 chairs for watching the ocean every morning. Room was spacious and fairly updated. Small pool and hot tub, nice area to relax, not crowded when we were there enough chairs and places to sit and have a drink. There are a lot of stairs so just something to consider if you have mobility issues FOOD: breakfast was included in our package, buffet every morning with lots of variety. Make sure you try the bakes! We had lunch here a few times, burger was and quesadillas were delicious. We also tried several places off property. STAFF: great friendly staff, everyone was wonderful. EXCURSIONS: included was the whale watching adventure, amazing and we were lucky enough to see 4 whales on our outing. Trip to the Falls was great! We also arranged a couple of our own outings with vivienne the concierge. She was very helpful. The non diving couple were able to book extra excursions and felt everything they did was amazing. The only thing was sometimes we weren’t exactly clear on who we were paying for what (somethings were charged directly to the hotel, some you had to pay cash onsite) and what to bring (swimsuits, change of clothes) what amenities would be available at each place we stopped. So just make sure you are clear on all of the details before you leave. We visited at the end of April so cruise ship season was basically over, something to consider when you are booking, our understanding is that there can be ships docked every day in high season. Would definitely recommend Dominica and the Fort Young Hotel, and would absolutely come back!

Oceanfront Hotel and book a oceanfront room
Pros:

Best location on the waterfront plus we have booked a ocean front room which had a balcony which was excellent.

Cons:

Probably from entrance to our room there was some steps but porter took our luggage to the lift. Hotel was a Fort, great history.

Pros:

Breakfast was fine. I have seen worse and better. Employers were friendly. That goes a long way. Prices seemed high to me. Maybe that is the island way.

Great diving, otherwise ‘meh’
Pros:

First thing first: The diving was quite good for the Caribbean. Plenty of healthy corals, sponges, etc. A lot of small eels. Some medium size eels and a couple greens. Several snake eels. Bearded fire worms. Good small stuff: Hermit crabs, decorator crabs, gobies, anemone and cleaner shrimp, and quite a few juvenile fish, including puffers and trunkfish. Visibility was pretty good. Favorite sites included Solomon and Swiss Cheese. Water temp was 81F.

Shore diving is available but only when there is no cruise ship docked (for some reason, the staff blamed Hamas - I doubt the reach of Hamas is that long). Visibility on the shore dives was not good. I was bored.

The dive crews had some positives and negatives. The main dive guide was very assiduous in seeking stuff to see and as I had my camera rig with a macro setup, he did well in finding some interesting small stuff. The other guide was brand new to the island and hadn’t yet learned the sites very well and also tended to go a bit fast. We had one guide for an extra two Friday dives who was not very good. He went too fast, took us aggressively up current on one dive, which was not necessary, and didn’t find anything much to peer at. He also terminated a dive early for what we considered to be insufficient reason.

Topside, the guides and captain were friendly, but could’ve been a bit more helpful. For example, they were only sometimes there to pass a camera up to at the end of the dives. A couple divers grumbled about having to wrangle BCDs and tanks to set up before, between, and after dives. The boats are quite nice. We had plenty of room. Not very noisy since the boats had outboards rather than a noisy rumbling inboard engine under our feet. Rinse tank for cameras, head, fruit between dives - all appreciated. Our group agreed that they could up their game on the boats with more assistance with gear setup and breakdown, and more attentiveness on exits. Dive briefings were adequate but would’ve benefited by a white board or site maps to help divers better visualize the topography (bottomography?).

The resort/hotel was very nice with nice large clean rooms and excellent service. The layout of the place is complex (it took me a while before I stopped getting lost) with a lot of steps and roundabout routes from rooms to dive area, etc. Might be a problem for divers with knee or hip problems. The staff seemed to have a hard time getting bills straight. After a while, we just decided to resort to Venmo between us to fix cases where one of us was charged for the other, etc. rather than request (and wait for) a new bill.

Food on-site was ‘meh’. A decent breakfast buffet. A limited lunch menu that wasn’t particularly good, and long waits for often cold food. We resorted to eating off-site as often as we could, but even that was hit and miss. The only truly excellent restaurant we could was Lacou Melrose House. Great menu and excellent service by ‘Lightning’ (her real name). We went there twice.

The resort is quite a drive from the airport, but the views were stunning, especially the many rivers.

In spite of the regular cruise ship traffic, the town itself was pretty run down with little to offer in terms of shopping, etc. Uneven walkways and open culverts would pose a challenge to anyone with mobility issues. We had a guy who shadowed us for a while asking for money. There is a museum we meant to visit but didn’t get around to, and the government building complex nearby might’ve been interesting, but again, we didn’t get around to it.

Overall, very good diving (for the Caribbean), but little else that really stands out. But we went for the diving, so we were happy.
