Terrible 150$ charge that wasn’t advertised, and refusal to waive it

I rarely write negative reviews, but this experience with a Marriott property was exceptionally disappointing.

We arrived after a grueling long-haul international flight with our tiny dog. The room was booked through Booking.com, which clearly showed a total of $150. Upon check-in, however, the hotel immediately added a $150 “pet fee” for our small dog — a charge that was not visible anywhere in our booking confirmation or the app.

Exhausted from days of travel, we reluctantly paid the surprise fee. The hotel took zero responsibility for the lack of transparency. In fact, when we questioned it, the manager took my phone, searched through the Booking.com app herself, and pointed to deeply buried fine print that vaguely said “extra charges may apply.” They used this as justification for what felt like a deliberate gotcha charge.

To make matters worse, the manager refused to acknowledge that anything was wrong or offer any resolution. I later spent nearly an hour writing a detailed email to Marriott customer service with all the specifics. Their first response was a generic, defensive canned reply telling me to call the property — it was obvious they hadn’t actually read or understood my complaint.

This experience has completely destroyed my trust in Marriott. Between the property’s deceptive practices and corporate’s dismissive handling, the entire organization feels broken when it comes to genuine service and accountability. I will never stay at any Marriott brand again.

I had an issue with the laundry service. First, it was very expensive, and second, they mixed my white clothes with colored items, which caused some stains. I only noticed this after I had already left the hotel. I suggest that guests’ clothing should be handled with the utmost care.
