Needs a little tlc
Clean and comfortable room. Friendly staff. Beautiful historic building and grounds. Comfortable spa facilities. Very clean and well maintained throughout.
The check in desk was short staffed (only one person) when we arrived at peak time, leading to quite a long wait. The dinner could've been better - the lamb and my partner's burger were both overcooked and dry while the vegetables were undercooked and tough. I expect better at those prices.
The hotel building and premises are truly gorgeous and are easy to reach (we took a taxi from Birmingham; depending on the weekday or weekend, it was between 10 and 18 pounds). The spa facilities were clean and well-maintained. Even though they are quite small, there was always room. Our dog was nicely welcomed with a doggy bed, bowls and a bag of treats. The reception staff was great, especially Sarah, who was amazing, very attentive and could literally solve any issue.
There were a number of upsetting episodes that considerably affected the quality of our stay.
We travelled with a small dog and booked a pet-friendly room.
The major issue related to this was eating in the hotel. I had called in advance and was told that the dog would not be allowed in the main restaurant, but we could eat in the bar&lounge area, including the main restaurant menu. Clearly, not all the staff are aware of this. Often when we came to the bar&lounge area, the staff was confused as to what to do with us. On one evening, when there was a wedding celebration in the hotel, we were even told that we likely could not eat there at all as the staff was busy with the wedding. They then told us to wait while they checked, and when nothing happened after 20 minutes, we went to ask the bar staff again; we were very rudely told off by a bartender - something that absolutely cannot happen in any hotel, let alone a 4-star one. We then had to go to Sarah, the receptionist, who confirmed that all guests are being served dinner in the bar & lounge and other areas of the hotel, and organised it for us. The food took very long to come, and we ended up eating at 9.30 pm (having come to the bar&lounge area around 7.30 pm). The next evening we had issues with dinner again: unlike other guests dining in the bar&lounge, our table was not set - no cloth or cutlery. On top of it, we waited more than an hour to get our food - salad and burger, nothing major - and when we finally got it, all other guests had already finished their meal, even though they came later than us. We ate again after 9 pm.
And a small cleanliness issue. Naturally, other dogs stayed in our room before, but the amount of pet hair on the carpet and the bed was quite shocking. We brought this up with the reception, and after a reminder, the room was hoovered again. Nevertheless, a lot of hair stayed - the hotel certainly needs stronger hoovers adapted to pet hair.
Wonderful location, excellent facilities, helpful staff, exceptional food.
Scaffolding ruined the outside view from the front of the building.
The hot tub was closed when we wanted to use it.
The breakfast pancakes weren't very nice.
The staff and bedroom were exceptionally nice. It’s good to see friendly staff that take time to talk to you. The garden and ponds around the back are very nice to walk-through.

Absolutely beautiful hotel, the staff were so friendly, food in the restaurant was delicious. We had a perfect stay in this wonderful hotel set in magnificent grounds.
Sehr nettes, bemühtes und zuvorkommendes Personal. Essen sowohl beim Frühstück, als auch abends sehr gut. Personal beim Essen überaus freundlich. Schöne, ansprechende Anlage. Saubere Zimmer und bequeme Betten. Wir würden wiederkommen.
Wir fanden schade, dass Kinder nur zu bestimmten Zeiten in den Pool dürfen. Das ist diskriminierend, es gibt ja auch keine gesonderten Schwimmzeiten für Ältere, Frauen, Behinderte etc.

Not much variety and most of the items were cold
Lots of walking to room and stairs not good with my mobility.
My bed was very uncomfortable
beautiful building and great spa
gluten free food options were poor .. 40mins for overcooked fries and a dry sandwich for £28 was very poor
