Quite disappointed with this Auberge which really doesn’t meet their normal standards.
The room was large, two stories and was well equipped, sort of!! Had to ask several times for things you’d normally expect. Staff not as friendly or helpful as expected and the food can be split.. breakfast food was good and choice was ok.. evening meal was atrocious and the service and eating areas were awful.. actually found it quite grubby.
Good base for Rhode Island which wasn’t what I expected at all.. very touristy and a little down market.. positively Baltic in March
The moment we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly staff ready and willing to assist us. Check in process was efficient. The room was immaculate. Staff through out our stay was so gracious and helpful. The entire inn is beautiful. The atmosphere creates a calm, warm and cozy feel. We loved every minute of our stay!
I had a wonderful New Year’s stay at the Vanderbilt. Gabby and the entire front desk team were incredibly kind, welcoming, and genuinely invested in making sure my friend and I had an amazing vacation. That level of hospitality truly stood out.
The property has such a cozy atmosphere with a beautiful Gilded Age edge. It feels both elegant and inviting. We attended the New Year’s Eve party and everything from the food and drinks to the entertainment was fantastic.
All in all, it was an awesome New Year’s excursion, and I will absolutely be back to stay at the Vanderbilt.
What a beautiful hotel in downtown Newport The decor is dark and warm. Rooms and common areas in excellent condition
The restaurant is excellent as are the cocktails and creative events the hotel hosts.
I have lived in Newport and have a business in town, but this is the first time at the hotel for either a food or overnight experience. The property is quintessential Newport - loads of historic detail and charm. It is elevated but understated at the same time. Loved the intimacy of the property and all the cozy rooms.
I have been going to the Vanderbilt Grace restaurant for about 15 years a few times a year. In its early days, the food, the design and ambience of the restaurant was exceptional. Warm cozy, atmosphere professional weight staff with terrific food. As it has gone through its different owners in the last 10 years. It has slipped a little bit each time. I’ve eaten there twice in the last two weeks. Two weeks ago the pork chop was excellent. Last night filet mignon special was slightly above average. It was old meat that had been frozen and lost its flavor when defrosted and cooked. The current ambience and decor is a monotone. Although semi luxurious nothing like it used to be. The waiter staff and host seem to be mostly local college kids. Certainly not a professional group.. Would say currently the menu is quite limited. Used to be better. The specials aren’t very good. Would consider other places like Castle Hill first. It’s not what it used to be. Take your chances going there.
My husband and I visited Newport for a few nights after our wedding. We wanted a relaxing, calming, and gorgeous getaway after a stressful wedding season. The Vanderbilt was the best place we have visited in a long time. From the service, to the accommodations, this place is a 10/10. We are sticklers for service and vibes, and the staff at this hotel exceeded our expectations. The bar and sitting areas were extremely relaxing, the restaurants were delicious, and the rooms were beautiful. The hotel is tucked away in the heart of Newport, we got to walk everywhere. Highly recommend if you want a romantic getaway with your partner. Plus they make a fantastic dirty martini!
The Vanderbilt is an amazing resort, dripping with genuine warmth and luxury. It's our second home, while visiting Newport. Highly recommend!
We went to the Vanderbilt for my birthday and traveled with my husband and two kids, age 9 and 14. I can't say enough good things about this lovely boutique hotel. We had a great two bedroom on the first floor, close to everything and the team went out of their way to take care of us all weekend. Definitely try the Macallan whiskey tasting but look out for the snooker table lol. Also highly recommend Randi and Micayla in the spa - they were lovely and the services were very tailored. Overall excellent service, beautiful spot and easy walking distance to anything you want to see in Newport. Highly recommend!
We were in Newport for our anniversary and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is in an great location and staff were amazing.
We stayed at The Vanderbilt for our son's wedding weekend, and we could not have been happier with the experience! The team is friendly and professional, and they went out of their way to make our stay special. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, and the food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner was outstanding. The hotel has a few different intimate spaces that are perfect for gatherings with friends. We love Auberge properties because each one of them has a soul that is consistent with the location, unlike other luxury brands that feel uniform and corporate. We highly recommend The Vanderbilt!
My friends and I had a fabulous weekend at the Vanderbilt to celebrate our birthdays. Before arriving, they checked in to see what our goals were for the weekend. Concierge returned our message with a few suggestions for restaurants, cocktails and shops.
Upon arrival, we were treated so well, like old friends. The staff was incredibly accommodating. We started off at the spa for fantastic massages. We enjoyed lunch and breakfast at the hotel, the food was very good. Our rooms were spacious and cozy- perfect for gathering and relaxing. We spent time in the library too - there are many rooms to explore and enjoy the different themed rooms.
From start to finish, the staff couldn’t be more welcoming or accommodating. We loved Gaby and Tyler. Thank you for making it such a special weekend for our girls trip!
This hotel is a charming step into the past. We felt like we were living in our own mansion! The guest rooms are large and comfortable and the public spaces are so so pretty. Service was unfailingly personal and attentive, and meals and drinks were excellent. We definitely want to return.
Timeless getaway with friends! Great location in Newport with amazing service! Highly recommend the Tarot Card Reading too!
The Vanderbilt Hotel is a gorgeous historic mansion. Everyone who works there treats you like you’re their only guest. It is quiet and intimate. None of the noise and crowd of most hotels. You will thoroughly enjoy your time in this special place.
Far below standards for Auberge property. Not a five star hotel - hotel property and staff need work to raise standards of this property.
I have been fortunate to stay at some of the nicest place in the world this one does not disappoint at all. From the location to customer service all are exceptional. The room was absolutely the best.
We spent three nights at The Vanderbilt and had a mostly positive experience. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Many were foreign students preparing to go back to university for the fall. Here are some of our observations.
First, since this is an Historic Hotel, it is not in the modern style. The hotel is dark inside. The dining room is dark, the rooms are dark, the hallways are dark. The walls most everywhere are painted dark green or something comparable.
The bathroom was small and had only a single pedestal sink with very little counter space. There was a window in the bathroom, but it was right next to the toilet so we had to keep the shade down whenever we were in there, making the bathroom dark.
But it had a great shower. Lots of water pressure and luxury shampoo and body wash. No problem washing the soap out of your hair here.
The room (at least ours) was decorated with heavy furniture and draperies and oriental-style rugs over the (dark) wall-to-wall carpeting. Nothing like a One and Only or similar contemporary hotel. Almost Victorian.
Most troublesome was the air conditioning. Our room had a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) controlled by a wall thermostat. We much prefer a whole-room system more like we have at home that gradually increases and decreases speeds as needed and which you can barely hear. The PTAC goes off and on according to the temperature set, and is quite noisy. When it is on, it blows cold air and can make the room drafty. Ours, unfortunately, was also squeaking to such a degree that we turned it completely off and used just a sheet since the room got a little warm. Luckily, the nights were cool so it was not too much of a problem. But I expected a better system from a luxury hotel that is part of the Auberge family. I have never encountered such a cooling system in a Ritz, Four Seasons, or comparable luxury brand.
The food at the hotel was excellent. The view from the rooftop bar is quite impressive. The bartenders mix a mean martini. Their riff on a vesper was my favorite. And breakfast in the garden was a delightful way to start our day.
The location is convenient to Thames Street and the wharves where most of the action is. It is a 10-15 minute drive to the the Cliff Walk and mansions, but if you stay in the area of the mansions (like at the Chanler) there are no restaurants or nightlife around. We found it better to stay in town and then go the mansions for a few hours each day rather than to try to do it the other way around.
We liked The Vanderbilt, but were not blown away. What we do not know, since this was our first trip to Newport, was whether there are any better options within an easy walk of the downtown action. We saw several smaller B&Bs, a Marriott on the water, and the newer Brenton hotel next to the Marriott, but did not explore them in order to compare.
Housekeeping staff was some of the best we ever experienced.
